Dodgers Acquire Greg Maddux

Ken Rosenthal tells us that the Dodgers have acquired Greg Maddux.  Will be interesting to see who the Cubs end up with.

UPDATE: CBS Sportsline indicates that the Cubs received Cesar Izturis in return. The Chicago Tribune's Dave van Dyck has a different take, but ESPN has confirmed the Izturis part.

why didnt the red sox make any trades to help this boring team!!!

theo you have some explaining to do!

hendry traded somebody *gasp*

CBS says Cesar Izturis goes to the Cubs

This sucks. Man, this one really hit my stomach when FOX and CBS Sportsline announced this one. All the Cubs need is another player that can't hit, and trade the only healthy, proven starter that they had. Wonderful.

So does Izturis play short for the Cubs while Cedeno moves to second? Or is this the end of Cedeno's playing time, considering Dusty's love for Neifi at second?

It's not too bad a deal considering Maddux has little left in the tank. A still young Gold Glove calider SS in return for a 40 year old pitcher with an ERA in the high 4's isn't too bad a deal.

is it straight-on or are there other players yet to be named?

What a terrible deal for the Cubs. The Dodgers have a great farm system, wanted a starting pitcher and could have used some infield help. The Cubs were looking to deal Maddux and Walker and could've thrown in Nevin and possibly a reliever to get some great young talent in return. Instead they get a Neifi Perez clone.

Looks like there is some cash involved too.

does Izturas have another year left on his deal? How much will he make next year? Could be a nice little trade for '07. Especally if Maddux comes back to wrigley via free agency in 07

Izturis is little more than a backup infielder at this point, so this trade is of little help to the Cubs now or in the future.

Dodgers got another starter who can give them innings. Maddux obviously on his last legs but he is healthy and doesn't walk anyone. Won't take more than 85 wins to take the NL West.

Good trade for Dodgers. Must've been no market for Maddux if the Cubs couldn't do better than Izturis

You Boston fans are whiners and babies. You just won the freakin World Series, are in first place in the division and your complaining about a lack of moves made?!?!? Try being an Astros, Cubs, Twins or Indians fan. Talk about suffering.

Lugo to Dodgers...wow

ESPN reporting Lugo to Dodgers for 2 prospects...don't have any names.

MLB Radio reporting that Ryan Shealy traded to the Kansas City Royals along with a minor league pitcher for Jeremy Affeldt and Denny Bautista.

Brian the red sox had a need and the resources to make a deal.........of course were mad

Bautista was a starter earlier, but his akward arm angle has created injuries, so he is now in AAA pitching in relief. Some reports say the Rockies consider Affeldt a possible closer.

Lugo for OF Joel Guzman and OF Sergio Pedroza

the red sox are in first place for like 2 more days. they need to keep up with the yankees and they didnt, and who cares if they won the world series a couple years ago we want more!!!!!!!!!!

From all reports prior to today, it looked as if the Hendry would not trade Maddux unless he got some higher level prospects in return. Izturis? Wow.

Am I the only Sox fan who thinks we're still fine????? Geez people, have a little faith in your team. You know Brian you're right, but don't lump me in with the whiners, I think the Sox chances are still very damn good.

A) if the sox did get a starter he probably would have been David Wells quality... why not gamble instead on David Wells instead.
B) Even if someone of Schmidt's caliber was truly available (and I seriously think he wasn't) asking price would have been astronomical for basically 2 months of service.
C) The Pen ain't that bad as people want to think. Yes it's a little shakey but the back end is SOLID which better than several other contenders.
D) Why outfield help? What's wrong with Peña. Glove isn't great but I wouldn't be shocked if he went to center where he did better and Coco goes to right.
E) Defense is solid and offense is better than anyone expected...

Geez people, calm the hell down

Mr.purple i understand your viewpoint and before yesterday i loved Boston's chances but my thought process is the Yankees are just .5 games back and they improved there team wile the red sox couldnt do any thing i think they needed to get a big bat or a Schmidt type but i mean they couldnt atleast improve the bench and the middle relief? he couldnt outbid omar for Linebrink?

I think he needed to do something big but atleast improve the team a little!

See this is the problem with Sox fans... we've taken on the yankee mentality that we can buy anyone. Hell if we kept that line of thinking we would have traded away lester in 04 for arod!

We got some solid arms in the minors and a bunch of names under the radar. If we don't win this year, we're still in a good position over the next few years.

Furthermore your kind of thinking had the Sox giving away Freddy Sanchez for Suppan.

I say good for Theo for not making any desperation deals.

goodbye maddux, all cubs fans will miss you :(

absolute terrible trade for LA. Maddux is DONE and needs to retire now

its funny you think our bullpen is good, the EZ brothers suck! MDC is injured, hansen has shown some bumps in the road, timlin has been solid and paps is the man but thats only 3 reliable arms

also i agree with our outfield situation, i am glad trot injured himslef so we can now see wily mo and his 24 year old raw power, did you see that ball he hit off the monster with a broken bat?

Wow Hendry got the better of someone? how does that happen?

Hey Roto, any idea as to whom the high-level prospects were that Hendry was considering? Just wondering if they were high-quality...like a Guzman. hendry said he was considering the deal until Izturis's name and then couldn't resist.

Yeah ozzie maddux is terrible. He is only 9-11 despite never getting much run support.Your name makes me think your a cards fan, how is your pitching staff this year?

Dunno Jman, maybe that'll come out in the papers tomorrow.

ptk,

maddux's record is very misleading, how's he pitched since the first month? Maddux is done

How has his run support been since the first month?

So what the cubs are supposed to win 8-6 everytime he pitches? There's no arguement that Maddux USED to be a great pitcher. But his time has come and gone

So what are the cards supposed to do win 8-6 every game that carpenter doesnt pitch. Because if maddux's time has come and gone than so has suppan, marquis, weaver, sosa, mulder, reyes.

Well the Cards pitchers have been just good enough to be in FIRST place

and we'll see The real Mark Mulder soon enough. He's finally healthy

Forgot to mention, Mulder did suffer some... but part of that is because he had the heart to try and pitch through his injuries.

Heart? I'm sure with Wood and Prior you don't know understand that concept. But it's about trying to work through injuries and keep pitching. Remember SPs are supposed to actually start games, not sit on the DL

Hey im a cubs fan, and I wont support wood or prior so talking about them is not going to piss me off. My point is you say maddux is done, yet he played for a team with a poor offense and still has 9 wins. Maddux has a better E.R.A than all those cards pitchers I mentioned. So knocking maddux is knocking 2/3 of your pitching staff. I didnt even mention mulder because he has been a joke this season, injury or not a JOKE.You cards fans can knock the cubs all you want, in our pathetic season we have beat the shit out of the cards.
