« MetsBlog: Perez and Bell Traded For Linebrink | Main | Report: Affeldt, Bautista Dealt For Shealy »
Word comes via ESPN that the Dodgers have acquired Julio Lugo for Joel Guzman and Sergio Pedroza.
I definitely didn't see this one coming. Jeff Kent should begin swinging a bat right around now after hitting the DL with an oblique strain on July 18th. The Lugo acquisition gives the Dodgers excellent depth in their infield. Former second base fill-ins Willy Aybar and Cesar Izturis have been sent out in other, solid deals. Once Kent is 100% and ready to play Wilson Betemit becomes an excellent bench player for the rest of the year. He'd still remain the second baseman of the future.

I guess that the Dodgers consider Betemit only a utility guy, not a starter.

is it just me or are the dodgers obsessed with shortstops, nomar(now 1B), furcal, izteriz(sp?)(now cubs), and now lugo.

UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!!! Did the redsox do freakin anything at the deadline. If not, they are out of the division lead and the playoffs.

oh, and betemit

I don't know a lot about Pedroza, but Guzman still doesn't have a position, but looks like a future hitting stud. Good deal for the D-Rays I think, but does Upton stay at SS or move to 3B because of the Huff deal? Guzman at 3B and Upton at SS, is that the answer?

i don't get giving up Guzman for Lugo when you just got Betemit, who would be just fine at third. Seems like a panic move to me.

i wanted lugo to play secondbase for the red sox

Betemit was acquired to play third which is his best position because his lack of range makes him a liability in the middle infield. Lugo is going to play 2nd

Great for TB. Stud prospect (still too raw I think though). No clue what LA's thinking on this one.

guzman was converted to LF by the dodgers, but i assume the d-rays will bring him back to either SS or 3B
Posted by: wood34 | July 31, 2006 at 03:33 PM
ok...so what happens when Kent comes off the DL?
Posted by: dholzer007 | July 31, 2006 at 03:36 PM
the dodgers become the dodgers of '05.
remember Valentin to outfield?

man ram,
what the hell is wrong with loretta??? a solid #2 hitter, good defender (not necessarily a good range but oh well).
Rob,
I already ranted about this in the maddux post... the sox are fine. They're still serious contenders

Awesome trades for the dodgers today.
Betemit playing 3rd, Lugo on 2nd, plus Perez is gone and we picked up dessens and maddux.
Once Kent comes back, it'll only be a problem for a few months, and I hardly call it a problem.

lugo is better in just about better than loretta in every offensive category, love his speed, he could bat leadoff and move youk to 5th behind man ram, i think lugo would have really helped out this lineup

Colleti keeps proving himself to be a horrible GM

also would have been nice to get some bullpen help cuz the EZ brothers suck.
now there are quotes of theo saying that the sox didnt make any deals because they dont have any real need or holes.

I've been listening to the radio and they had Ned on 2 different shows explaining why he did this trade. He said Kent is hurt and he said he hope's he will be back in 10-15 days. And the way the offense has been since the break, they need more offensive pop in their lineup or they will be out it quickly. Guzman has a lot of upside but he was expendable for the Dodgers since he has a questionable work ethic and plus they have no place they really can put him with Betimit, Laroche, Kemp, and Loney to have starting gigs next year. This trade gave them the depth they needed since You never know when Nancy Drew, Nomar or Kent are bound to get hurt.

AH-ha! Nancy Drew, that is spectacular!
Posted by: Sunny Reiser | July 31, 2006 at 08:30 PM
He's still retarded... You don't give away a Solid prospect for a player that is pretty much equal to 2-3 players already on your roster.
and there's no excusing the Maddux trade
Posted by: ozziethesaint | July 31, 2006 at 08:36 PM
the rays appear to have Guzman pegged as either 1B or 3B...both are wide open, even with Uptons temporary move to 3B
Posted by: The Professor | July 31, 2006 at 10:53 PM
I would lean towards 1b because tehre's basically no one else in their system
