What's cooking this morning in the world of MLB trade rumors?
Gotham Baseball's Mark Healey spoke to all sorts of baseball sources; here's his latest Rumor Mill. New developments: the Mets could pursue various Rockie pitchers, and the Yanks crave John Smoltz.
My Mets guy indicates that the Wilson Betemit for Scott Linebrink deal that's been bandied about could go down at the last minute. What? He hears things outside of the Mets.

SportsBlah sorts through the Alfonso Soriano rumors.
Jimmy Gobble was scratched from his start last night. Let the rampant rumormongering begin. Actually, KC just switched him with Runelvys Hernandez to break up the southpaws in the rotation.
As the days go by, Doug Melvin sounds more and more like he'll trade Carlos Lee.
RotoAuthority gives the fantasy take on Shin-Soo Choo, Ben Broussard, Scott Kazmir, and many more recent developments.
All the newspapers are reporting that the Yankees have deemed Scott Proctor "untouchable." I know good relief help is hard to find, but should a 29 year-old middling reliever at the peak of his value really be deemed untouchable? Especially the way Joe Torre is abusing him.
Hadn't heard of the Mets' interest in Juan Cruz and Jose Valverde until Dan Graziano mentioned it this morning. Could be a great buy low situation for a real live arm in Valverde. Cruz I think could be tough to pry away.
There was just no reason to try to start Roger Clemens trade speculation. The Astros, five games back in the wildcard, have invested way too much to suddenly wave the white flag.
Bidding war for...Cory Lidle? Looks like Toronto has the lead so far; Lidle starts tonight.
Buster Olney mentioned today in his blog that the White Sox are willing to discuss trades for Freddy Garcia. He also indicates that the Red Sox are working on a large, creative deal with more than two teams.
Add the Mariners and Cardinals to the Yankees for Shawn Green's interested parties. He can veto a deal to any of these three teams and is happy in Arizona.

Of course the yankees crave Smoltz, everyone craves Smoltz. The braves crave ARod but that doesnt mean there is any chance of it happening.
It is BS to say the braves asked for Tabata for Smoltz, there is no chance of the braves trading Smoltz unless they were a 100 loss team. I wish I could make a living making things up like that person apparently does.

If teams were considering trading for Freddy Garcia, they should take one look at his BB/9, K/9 and HR/9 trends over the last 4 seasons, then quickly turn the other way. If they are still interested, despite all the evidence, they should look at his salary. If they still want to trade for them, they are probably Jim Duquette.

I would trade Juan Pierre and Bobby Howry for Garcia. He's only on the hook for next year. Even if it's 10 mil, we won't be on the hook for a long term bad contract. Plus, he'd have an easier time in the much weaker hitting National League without the DH.

I have to agree with cajunrevenge. Smoltz is NOT going anywhere. JS has said that the only way they would consider trading Smoltz is if they were out of the race for a playoff spot. 4.5 games back of the WC is nothing especially when they are surging. With 9 games against the struggling Mets including three games this weekend they could even catch them. Smoltz is staying, Andruw is staying, Giles or Betemit may not be

The Cubs want to rebuild so why would they trade for a pitcher who is over 30. They can get a lot of value for Pierre and especially Howry with such a high price on relievers with the season he is having

Rich Hill is scheduled to start for the Cubs tonight against the Cardinals at Wrigley Field. I have not seen an official call up yet on Hill, nor have they made any room for him on the roster. Can you fill us in on what the heck Jim Hendry is doing, besides washing down Krispy Creams with hair tonic.

I've been hearing Kevin Slowey & Glen Perkins
FOR
Carlos Lee this would be great deal for the twins.

A good possible trade partner for the Cubs would be the Angels. They have more infielders than they need, (Chone Figgins, Orlando Cabrera, Maicer Izturis, Adam Kennedy) each one of these guys could play 3B, 2B, & SS. If they can pry one of these guys away from the Angels we can move Cedeno to 2B or keep him at SS. Todd Walker could be a welcome to the Angels, as a DH or 1B or 2B.

They can get a lot of value for Pierre
Have you watched a baseball game this season? Pierre is horrible, allow me to repeat myself, HORRIBLE!!!
If they get anymore than some mid level prospect for him the other team's GM should be fired on the spot
Posted by: ozziethesaint | July 27, 2006 at 12:21 PM
Juan Pierre was horrible but has gotten his Avg. over .270 with a .363 mark this month. He has been very good lately
Posted by: was385 | July 27, 2006 at 01:09 PM
RotoAuth- What do you think the Dbacks want in return for Shawn Green? Would they take just 1 mid level prospect if a team eats the remaining salary on his deal? If a team gives 2 prospects could they possibly kick in about 4mil to cover Greens 9.5 mil for next year plus his 2 mil buyout?
Posted by: registereduser | July 27, 2006 at 01:27 PM
Shawn Green has a no-trade clause. The only teams he would be willing to go to are West Coast teams. Doesn't matter if any team is in contention, he is not a team player, he considers baseball his job. The location for which he is employed is his #1 priority. Most players want to play in a World Series, and not just a job.
Posted by: cubsbaseball | July 27, 2006 at 01:56 PM
Does having a no-trade clause and considering using it make you a bad person?
Posted by: RotoAuthority | July 27, 2006 at 01:59 PM
In the article I read today he said "If a trade comes up then I will consider it at that time" That sounds to me like he would consider it.
Posted by: registereduser | July 27, 2006 at 02:19 PM
I'd have to think that the DBacks would have to be the ones to include a prospect with Green (and get nothing in return), and that they'd be overjoyed to do so.

Ozziethesaint you are horrible. Have you watched any baseball games lately? Have you noticed Juan Pierre getting on base a lot, getting a lot of steals, and playing pretty good defense? I dont see the cubs trading pierre, I hope we resign him since we gave a lot up to get him.
Posted by: ptk420biatch | July 27, 2006 at 03:15 PM
Pierre's OBP says you are a liar
Posted by: ozziethesaint | July 27, 2006 at 03:34 PM
a .322 OBP and 21 BBs in 421 ABs is not my idea of getting on base alot....
Hendry is basically a fool for giving up Nolasco, Pinto, and Mitre for this worthless slug
Posted by: ozziethesaint | July 27, 2006 at 03:38 PM
So you wouldn't trade an awful, light hitting outfielder that is the worst defensive CF in the game and a 3.54 era set up man set to make 8 million the next two years for a 30 year old starting pitcher who is a sure bet to get 200 innings every year and, in my opinion, post a sub 4 era?
Without starting pitching, you got nothing. We don't have any in the majors or in the minors. Getting a guy like Garcia in free agency will cost at least a 5 year/ double digit mil deal....no thanks.
Personally, I would trade Eyre to the Braves for Betemit. Howry and Pierre for Garcia. If the Dodgers are really desparate then try to get Ethier for Maddux and Walker....or Maddux for Howie Kendrick from the Angels.

Longtime lurker, first time poster. Keep in mind there are two halfs to every season...true, Pierre has been a huge disappointment, but he is showing signs of life and might end up being a good leadoff hitter for the Cubs. You have to admit, the whole year has basically been a disaster for the Cubs, so his results so far are hardly the best judge of his future potential. His career stats say he should be better this half. Don't know about resigning him though...they are going to want to bring up Pie next year...they might put Pie in left and shop Murton for bullpen help now that Williamson is gone. I live 10 minutes from the AAA affiliate (Iowa Cubs) and Pie has been disappointing but the Cubs will bring him up no matter what next year.
Posted by: Ryan | July 27, 2006 at 03:57 PM
I think we expected Pierre to have a season similar to the ones he had in '03 and '04; however he's having a near exact type of season he had in '05. He may be hot right now, but history shows that he is just as, if not more, likely to end up with stats he had in '05 than him keeping up this hot streak going for the whole rest of the way.
Anything we could get for him now would be nice and would give Pie some PT in the final two months of the season.
I don't think Pie will be the starting CF next year if he continues to struggle.
Posted by: Teetz | July 27, 2006 at 04:06 PM
To say we should look at Pierre's career numbers is not exactly helping his case for what it's worth. He's only got a career .351 OBP and never walked more than 55 times in a season. and that took over 650 ABs

Pie is a joke, I used to call him a minor league superstar but he isnt even that anymore. As a cubs fan im sick of cubs prospects never doing anything, and when there value is high they arent traded.Pie has like 90 K's in triple A so what would be the benefit to give him time with the cubs this season?

Hmmm, Let's see... He can't be any worse than Pierre at getting on base. and absolutely must be a better defensive OFer

"Maddux for Howie Kendrick from the Angels."
Please put the crack-pipe down, and step away from the vehicle!

btw, Felix Pie is nowhere close to being major-league ready. All reports this season are that he's being dominated and overmatched by AAA pitching. No way he's starting the season in Wrigley next year, Pierre, Murton, Jaques Jones on or off the roster or not.

"With 9 games against the struggling Mets"
Struggling? Because they happened to lose a series after winning 3 straight series? You Braves fans are hilarious.

A lot worse has been traded for a LOT more in the past. Real mature post by the way.

The angels don't even wanna trade someone like Kendrick to get Soriano...
There's no way they'd trade him for worthless garbage like Maddux
Posted by: ozziethesaint | July 27, 2006 at 10:41 PM
I never said Felix Pie was ready or would be good, but the Cubs will bring him up regardless, because either they move him up or they have to admit to everyone that he has no trade value anymore with his struggles at AAA Iowa. Bottom line, play him or trade him (they should've traded him before this season, when his value was sky-high). I have a buddy who used to be in the Cubs system and he played with Pie and said he is the most selfish player he ever played with and only cares about stats...if that's the case, where are the stats Pie? I feel for you Cubs fans...one prospect that works out would be nice.
