Viva El Birdos: Cardinals Acquire Jorge Sosa

You might have a hard time getting over there, as SB Nation's servers have been overwhelmed.  But the Cardinals blog Viva El Birdos reports that the Cards have acquired pitcher Jorge Sosa for Triple A reliever Rich Scalamandre.

Sosa's progression this year was as follows.  First, he signed a $2.2MM deal with the Braves in January after posting a very flukey 2.55 ERA in 134 innings.  Then Sosa pitched for the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic as a reliever in March.  The Braves decided to begin the season with Sosa as their #4 starter and John Thomson in the pen.  By late June, Sosa was moved to the bullpen due to his poor pitching.  After mercifully removing him from the rotation, Bobby Cox decided to make Sosa the closer.  By the middle of the month Sosa lost his job to Ken Ray; he was demoted yesterday.

Scalamandre, 25, was promoted to Triple A on June 21st and has been OK in 19 innings.

I actually like this trade...
Sosa was once highly thought of and it's low risk high reward

I, as a braves fan, would have taken a bucket of baseballs for Jorge Sosa

dont know why the cards need sosa

Scalamandre isn't worth much more than a bucket of balls

wood, sosa is the back up in case (bursts out laughing) Weaver fails.

ozzie, I competely agree, he is a decent pitcher who has the potential to do if not great then not bad...

Who the hell cares people, the Cardinals have better things to worry about, like if their face of the franchise isgoing back on the Dl or not.

the cardinals should have been going after a LF, not sosa. Wainwright could replace weaver if needed

Wood....
Wainright will not go into the rotation this season at all. He needs to go to ST so he can work his arm for the endurance of starting. He would do no good as a 4IP SP right now. and No the Cards didn't need a LF right now Duncan is working out nicely. and in a month's time if that changes Walt will turn to a High $ guy like a Shawn Green that can clear waivers

This is a no-risk move. The cards will add a bat in august but for now Jocketty is checks off another item off his list.

First SP, then 2b, now BP, next is LF

shawn green would veto a trade to the cards.

You are correct registereduser. Unless Dunc keeps hitting

Wood

There has already been talks between the Cards, Dbacks, and Green's agent.

i know, it just is extremely unlikely anything will come from it from what i have heard

I heard that the sosa deal meant a marquis deal is coming

Wood

From what I've heard from an inside source is that Green is ready to move on. He knows he's not really wanted in AZ

don't bet on it. marquis won't clear waivers. So unless it's a deal that still needs to be announced from this afternoon, I don't see it happening

That's what I mean. It's still possible that a deal has yet to be announced but sent to the comish office. It's a long shot but still possible.

The only Marquis rumor I heard was to the Mets for Heilman

i don't see the benefit of this unless jocketty is looking for some bait on down the road. we now have 4 maybe 5 starters that are all 5th quality starters, at best. without carp, who knows where we would be.

the benefit is, he was basicaly free

The best use of Sosa will be to take the hammer instead of Marquis when LaRussa wants to "save the bullpen". The Cardinals did not have a long reliever that could pitch 4-5 innings to finish a game.
