« Red Sox Pursuing Javy Lopez | Main | Which Team Was Awarded The Andruw Jones Claim? »
Rob Bradford of Massachusett's Eagle-Tribune writes that Andruw Jones has been placed on waivers by the Braves. I discovered this via Buster Olney's blog. Said Olney:
src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js">
"In any event, I seriously doubt Jones will be playing for anybody but the Braves, despite the fact that in the next week, he'll earn the 10-and-5 right to veto any trade. But we'll soon know if anybody has placed a claim, and whether the Braves are willing to discuss a trade."
Jones makes $13.5MM next season in the last year of his contract. He'll turn 30 in the beginning of the '07 season. Andruw's .350 OBP and .514 SLG are right in line with career norms. Baseball Prospectus expects him to remain at this level until about 2009. Remember, National League teams would get the first crack at Jones if more than one club puts in a claim. I could see the Cardinals and Astros putting in claims. If the Braves can't make a deal with the team that claimed Jones, they can always just pull him back.
For a good summary of how waiver trades work, consult Steve Phillips's article from a year ago.

How/where can you tell what players get placed on waivers? Is there a site that tells you or is it a secret?
Posted by: TheCincyKid | August 03, 2006 at 09:32 AM
It's a secret to the public, but a lot of it gets leaked out. More of Gammons were here.

I'd like to see what Atlanta could get for Jones, but I think the best deal was the one with the Sox that Esptein declined.
Posted by: leshii | August 03, 2006 at 09:49 AM
The best possible deal, that is. I can't see the Astros or Cardinals giving us much more than that.
Posted by: leshii | August 03, 2006 at 09:51 AM
I wouldnt be surprised if he were to be traded to someone because of his salary less teams would put a claim i would think.
But dont read mumch into this they say everyone on everyteam gets put in waivers really

Just for the record, you can't read the Steve Philips article explaining waiver trades unless you are an ESPN Insider. May be better off linking up to another site.

The braves still consider themselves contenders and for all intensive purposes they are. I don't see them getting rid of Jones unless its for someone like Oswalt which someone else would block...

Well, there's this...

Start wearing purple i think the deal you are talking about involving oswalt and jones was a three way with boston in the middle
Boston-Oswalt
Atlanta-prospects
houston-Jones
so judging that deal it seems that the braves would trade Andrew for the future
Posted by: Kramerica Industries | August 03, 2006 at 10:35 AM
If Boston, Atlanta, and Houston weren't able to do a trade by the deadline what makes you think that there will be a trade now,
the only reason a trade didn't go down was because Houston got cold feet thinking that jones would only be a rent a player for 2 months and that houston would be giving away there good prosepects
Posted by: NYCBOY21 | August 03, 2006 at 10:43 AM
that would be worth it... prospects being hansen, ellsbury and another (with a lock on delcarmen, lester, and pedroia)
But I really only see that in the offseason and still it seems unlikely
Posted by: start_wearing_purple | August 03, 2006 at 10:44 AM
NYC,
Jones has another year on his contract I believe. And I don't think you'll see a trade like that now... too many possibilites of it being blocked.
Posted by: start_wearing_purple | August 03, 2006 at 10:46 AM
I am not 100% sure if this is possible, and I'm sure you'll let me know if it's not.
If you are the Cubs, aren't you 2nd only to the Pirates in the waiver chain? So, why not place a claim on him to block the Cards and Astros (and whoever else might want to trade for him) and offer up whatever the Braves wanted more or less. This is a major piece for the Cubs and would solve their CF problems, as well as give them a formidible middle of the lineup order. Give them maybe Prior, Marmol, and Pie? Just a thought...you can haggle on the pieces.
Anyway, Bobby Cox is likely going to retire, the Braves are being sold, and they will likely turn over that whole coaching staff. They know they can't compete with the Mets for at least next year, so why not trade top talent for prospects and younger players and rebuild? Even the Braves have to stop to reload once every 15 years. Thoughts on this? (I would love to see Jones leave Atlanta...I'm a Mets fan and he has been like a plague for us, him and Chipper both)

"Jones has another year on his contract I believe. And I don't think you'll see a trade like that now... too many possibilites of it being blocked."
Your allowed to have the team you are traded to in the middle of a major contract to ask for a trade.
Posted by: Kramerica Industries | August 03, 2006 at 11:08 AM
by blocked I meant by another team during the wavier trade phase...
Posted by: start_wearing_purple | August 03, 2006 at 11:28 AM
I understood that part i was just saying why houston would be nervous to trade Oswalt for a two month rental
Posted by: Kramerica Industries | August 03, 2006 at 11:58 AM
they'd be nervous to pay for a centerfielder and lose their somewhat young and cheap ace.
Posted by: start_wearing_purple | August 03, 2006 at 12:44 PM
Purple
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
I'm saying that there isn't going to be a trade but i think jones can opt out of his contract and sign some where else or houston dosen't want to pay his contract or resign him
Posted by: NYCBOY21 | August 03, 2006 at 01:04 PM
I dont know where your getting your information because it sounds a lot more like wishfull thinking from a mets fan.
Cox is not about to retire and has said he will coach atleast 2 more years and there is nothing to indicate a coaching turnover.
The braves have been rebuilding for over a year now, they dont do rebuilding in the traditional sense. They brought up prospects to fill in while still winning. They might trade Andruw if he wont resign at a resonable amount because of his agent Borass, but it will be for players that will help in 07 and not prospects.
While the braves will have new owners it makes no sense for an owner to come in and just severly cut the payroll, after all, they cant be any worse than Time Warner already is.
No owner was announced although its likely to go to Liberty, if it is sold to an owner that gives a damn the payroll will go up.

Apparently not as significant as one might think.
"First, it is absolutely typical for a team to put such a player on waivers to, as dadgum or someone else here pointed out, test the waters. No reason whatsoever not to do it. There’s nothing to lose.
Only a few higher-payrolled teams would risk putting a claim on Andruw and absorbing the remainder of his salary this season and next year’s $13.5 mill commitment.
If someone claims him and Braves can’t work a deal with that team to their (Braves) liking, they’d just pull him back. No harm done. People, believe me, some teams put their ENTIRE ROSTER on waivers this time of year, just so the ones who clear can then be traded if a deal pops up quickly in August and a contending team gets desperate for a player after an injury or whatever to someone a contending team was counted on.
Desperate teams sometimes make desperate deals, and if another team’s players have already cleared waivers, they can deal those guys. If a team hasn’t gone through the process, it puts itself in a weakened position of being unable to do something until going through the entire waiver process; meanwhile the desperate team will likely have moved on to do a deal with someone else.
The fact that Andruw becomes a 10-5 guy next week simply adds one more reason to do this with him. Because if, say, the Red Sox came back and caved to Schuerholz’s demands (and he might even ask for more, this time around), then the Braves could do the move. Like I’ve said before, I don’t think Andruw would block a move anyway to a team like the Sox or another tradition-rich team in a good city with a chance to get to the World Series, etc, and possibly re-sign him to a big extension.
Again, this waivers move is REALLY COMMON, so don’t let some folks weighing in here later tell you it’s not. I know at least one who’ll come in here and start shouting about how the Braves are SHOPPING Andruw when that’s not what this means. Like I’ve said, teams routinely put their high-priced stars on waivers just in case, because they can be pulled back without losing them anyway."

The one promblem is say a deal could be reached with the braves for jones with say the red sox the odds of jon Lester, craig Hansen through waivers are slim. Now my question is can the red sox put the old ptbnl(and name the players after the season) on lester and hansen and the braves would get there guys after the season or that against baseball rules?
Posted by: Kramerica Industries | August 03, 2006 at 04:21 PM
I believe the PTBNL can't be on the Major League roster.
Posted by: RotoAuthority | August 03, 2006 at 04:27 PM
ok but could the red sox send down lester and hansen then put the ptbnl label on them? Because GM's will be creative in august

What are your thoughts on the Reyes signing? Did the Mets just totally rip him off or what?
Posted by: TheRealErik | August 03, 2006 at 05:04 PM
The current order of waiver claims:
1. Kansas City Royals
2. Pittsburgh Pirates
3. Tampa Bay Devil Rays
4. Chicago Cubs
5. Cleveland Indians
6. Washington Nationals
7. Baltimore Orioles
8. Atlanta Braves
8. Florida Marlins
10. Houston Astros
10. Milwaukee Brewers
12. San Francisco Giants
12. Philadelphia Phillies
14. Los Angeles Dodgers
14. Colorado Rockies
16. Seattle Mariners
17. Texas Rangers
18. Arizona Diamondbacks
19. Cincinnati Reds
19. Los Angeles Angels
21. San Diego Padres
22. Oakland Athletics
22. Toronto Blue Jays
24. St. Louis Cardinals
25. Minnesota Twins
26. Chicago White Sox
27. New York Mets
27. Boston Red Sox
29. New York Yankees
30. Detroit Tigers
Posted by: DoctorCurveBall | August 03, 2006 at 08:29 PM
If Andruw Jones is to be claimed, it would likely begin with the Dodgers as they have the money for his contract, and a hole in center field between Drew and Ethier. They are only 3.5 games behind in their division and 3 games behind in the Wild Card.
Because of his clause though, he might reject any trade unless it's to another team that claims him; Red Sox, Yankees, Mets, White Sox, or Detroit.
Posted by: DoctorCurveBall | August 03, 2006 at 08:34 PM
Why is there an order, is it like the 1st team or the worst team gets first dibs on a player thats on wavivers
Posted by: NYCBOY21 | August 03, 2006 at 08:36 PM
the ONLY way the Mets would claim Andrew is to block him from going somewhere like the Yanks or BoSoX. Met Fans HATE HIM!
Posted by: bdid | August 03, 2006 at 08:40 PM
Most people do hate a player until he's on your side. I didn't think of Carlos Beltran, so I doubt the Mets would claim him, but I don't think it would b because their fans hate him.
Posted by: DoctorCurveBall | August 03, 2006 at 08:43 PM
Reyes signing seems fair. Mets get a discount assuming he keeps playing well, Reyes gets a lot of security and is set for life even if he sucks.
Posted by: RotoAuthority | August 03, 2006 at 09:03 PM
'Reyes gets a lot of security and is set for life even if he sucks.'
No, no, no. MILLEDGE sucks.
Posted by: TheRealErik | August 03, 2006 at 10:19 PM
Milledge is the real deal. I can't wait till he's an all star and you are eating crow.
Posted by: bdid | August 03, 2006 at 11:59 PM
I can't believe Reyes signed that cheap... what was it 6 mil a year approximately? And everyone laughed at me when I wanted him as part of a deal for manny.
I saw Milledge play, he looked ok, the only thing he sucked at was playing against the Green Monster which many experienced big leaguers have trouble with.

The Tigers R for real baby. #1. Pudge Rodriguez walk-off HR w/ 2 outs. Detroit Tigers 2006 World Series Champions!
Posted by: pistonsfan133 | August 06, 2006 at 09:35 PM
The one thing about Andruw leaving, I doubt he'd waive his no trade clause for Balti, New York, or Boston because he HATES cold weather as he's said on many occaisions.
I could see him going to either LA(either) before I could see him going to any AL East team.
