« D'Backs Interested In Mulder, David Wells | Main | Jennings To Houston »
UPDATE AT BOTTOM.
Don't hold me to it (my French is rusty) but appears that Eric Gagne may have signed with the Rangers for one year and $8MM, pending a physical. Any expert translators out there?
This may have been in the works for a while, given that Jon Daniels has already begun shopping Akinori Otsuka.
Thanks to Joe Siegler of Rangerfans.com for the tip.
UPDATE: Ken Rosenthal confirms that the Rangers are close with Gagne.
It's official: one year, $6MM. $5MM possible in performance bonuses.

Wow. 8 million dollars off basically a good track record. And he didn't even have to show off for the scouts. Shows you how bad teams need relievers.
If Gagne is getting 8 million because he used to be really good, how much is Sammy Sosa going to ask for?

F!

Sorry, but the article only says that the Rangers have offered Gagne 1/$8. It does not say that he has accepted the offer.
The first paragraph suggests only that he may go to Texas, not that he will go to Texas.

Rosenthal has picked it up now, saying they are closing in on a deal. The Rangers are probably uncomfortable with Aki because the NL seemed to figure him out his second season and hit him pretty good. Aki could probably get them another bat to protect Teixera in the middle of the order.

Oh, well that's hopeful news for Indians fans. I take back the F.
Although 1/$8M is more than the reported $6M he was offered earlier, which at this point would make it the highest bid. Unless, of course, that's $8M without incentives.
If Gagne takes $8M guaranteed over a possible $11M after incentives, I think that would be a clear signal of what he thinks of his rehab thus far.

I take back the hopeful news for Indians fans, and resubmit my F.
Still, I stand by my statement. If he was reportedly offered $6MM guaranteed and $5MM in performance incentives, and he chose the $8MM guaranteed, isn't that a bad sign?

Otsuka got "hit pretty good" to the tune of 55 hits in 62.2 IP his 2nd season - including just 3 homers. His bigger problem was the walks.
Unless they're getting a great return, I can't understand why the Rangers would want to pay 4x as much for a guy who likely wont be as effective.
Posted by: RedsManRick | December 12, 2006 at 10:58 AM
I don't understand this. Otsuka seems to be a solid reliever, his numbers are good and he has at least played during the last few seasons, more than I can say for Gagne.

He also only pitched in 5 games during September because of migraines caused by the weather in TX. The Rangers have a deep bullpen should Gagne not be able to return close to his dominant form and Aki is a good trade chip. This team still needs a middle of the order bat and some starting pitching. A package starting with Aki can fill one of those holes.

It does make sense to sign a FA that bolsters a position you already had strength in, because where your holes are (SP, for example) can't be attractively filled through free agency. So in this case, you're signing a closer when you already have one, and now you have the flexibility to trade for what you need instead of overpaying a middle-tier free agent. Makes sense.

"If Gagne takes $8M guaranteed over a possible $11M after incentives, I think that would be a clear signal of what he thinks of his rehab thus far."
Good point, if he so confident about his health and his ability, what's so bad about an incentive contract?

It's done apparently.

I really like this deal, about as much as I liked the lofton move. 8 million is a lot but the Rangers aren't risking a lot here-
if he sucks- tom hicks lost 8 mil
if he's gagne of 02- a steal that could be traded for young arms and bats or they could try and retain him, whatever.
Too bad they still need two SP's and atleast one big corner OF bat...
Posted by: jd | December 12, 2006 at 12:42 PM
It's 6 million
Posted by: stormstarter28 | December 12, 2006 at 01:51 PM
Well ignore all that incentives talk I had earlier.
Posted by: nickjs21 | December 12, 2006 at 01:52 PM
This move is foolish.
Mr. Gagne hasn't pitched much at all.
But, heck, who am I to complain? This isn't my money that I'm throwing away!
I wonder who will be the next 5.50+ ERA guy who "Eats innings" will earn $30M?
Gotta love the 'free' Agency of baseball.
Too bad I'm not left-handed, and I don't know how to pitch.

"Too bad I'm not left-handed, and I don't know how to pitch."
which precisely explains why these guys are getting what they're getting.
Posted by: bryan | December 12, 2006 at 02:08 PM
I actually like the deal... If Gagne comes back to be half the pitcher he was before the surgerys, it's the best deal this winter... I wouldn't be too keen on throwing Akinora Otsuka away before Gagne throws a ball... But, they have a real strong bullpen in Texas and have a plan... Apparently, he is as healthy as he has been in years... If I see a low 90s fastball out of him, I think it's worth it...
Posted by: allabouthephils | December 12, 2006 at 03:37 PM
There's nothing foolish about a one year deal. Really, should they have just kept the money for profit instead of taking a crack at Gagne? No one knows if he will return to his old form, but if he does, this is an absolute bargain. Why not take a chance?

The Astros have acquired right-hander Jason Jennings from the Rockies, FOXSports.com has learned.
The Rockies will receive center fielder Willy Taveras and right-handers Jason Hirsh and Taylor Buchholz for Jennings and right-hander Miguel Asencio, major-league sources said.

Congratulations.... We have a new WORST deal candidate for this offseason.....
Houston got straight raped in this deal....
Posted by: allabouthephils | December 12, 2006 at 03:54 PM
hahahaha what a terrible trade... just imagine if they dont even sign Jennings... and if I'm Jennings, I ask for the moon. With the contracts players are getting now, a year in the NL before hitting the market should get him a VERY nice payday
Posted by: tyler | December 12, 2006 at 03:56 PM
Not to get off topic... but what does that mean for all the other tradable starters out there ???
Holy cow Jennings isn't setting the world on fire... I can only imagine what Jon Garland would fetch...
Posted by: allabouthephils | December 12, 2006 at 03:56 PM
Jesus. The Astros are crazy. Hirsh is probably worth as much as Jennings.
Posted by: Rayman | December 12, 2006 at 03:58 PM
as a cardinals and rangers fan living in st. louis this is the best day of the offseason so far, i wouldn't deal hirsh or taveras seperately for jennings
Posted by: kevmill21 | December 12, 2006 at 03:58 PM
isn't jennings in his walk year?
Posted by: kevmill21 | December 12, 2006 at 04:02 PM
Yes, he is in his walk year.
Good God, what an awful trade for Houston. All that for one year of Jason Jennings? Yikes.
Posted by: SBE | December 12, 2006 at 04:08 PM
Yep... That why this deal is so crazy.... I couldn't see this deal ever working under any circumstance, but if Jennings had retainability at say 3MM or 4MM a year for a few years then it might not be so horrible..... The Astros were real desperate...
Posted by: allabouthephils | December 12, 2006 at 04:09 PM
Good lord. To me Garland would be a much more attractive target. If Jennings got Colorado that package, then what the hell really happened between Williams and Purpura?
