Cantu Off To Durham

According to Buster Olney in his blog today:

"Heard last night, by the way, that Jorge Cantu will swallow his frustration with being sent to Triple-A and head to Durham, rather than walk away, something he had initially talked about doing. He really doesn't have a choice."

Cantu is just going to have to put his head down and put up some big numbers in Triple A to earn a trade back into a full-time job.  Last time he was in Triple A, he hit .302/.335/.576 with 22 HR in 368 ABs.  The 25 year-old might be able to help out in Oakland, Atlanta, Cincinnati, or Washington.  I know some people want him on the Mets, and I suppose that could happen.  But I'd rather have Jose Valentin right now.

Also an interesting D-Rays read - looks like Scott Boras's camp never informed Seth McClung that he an option left.  Oops.

if the braves could get him cheap, id do it in a heart beat, like maybe a bullpen piece of ours that is stuck in triple AAA

The Braves don't need a guy that is on a downward slide in this post steroids era. They just moved one of those to San Diego.

Cincinnati? That makes no sense. Qoakland or Atlnta I can see, but Cincy? Cae to explain that thinking?

To play 1B and add some power. Yes I know they have some guys in the system but I could still see Krivsky doing this.

Wouldn't the Reds be better off with Dunn at 1B and Hamilton in LF ?

the Mets? Pass. If he was willing to go to AAA for now, where he could play at 1B, 2B, maybe 3B and some corner OF, until a spot opened up later in the season, where he could play a utility role, I could see that, but I can't imagine he'll be any happier in New Orleans than in Durham.

Hamilton in RF and Griffey in LF is the ideal defense with Hamilton's arm.

I personally think the Kelly Johnson thing will fail but they have Escobar and Prado to play 2B. I think its more likely that the Mets, Royals, or A's make a deal for Cantu and Beane has always been a Gomes fan as well.

I think the Mets should take a chance on him. Valentin needs a platoon partner (he only hit .219 versus lefties last year). Cantu is just 25 years old, and is two years removed from a very impressive season. He's obviously not in the D-Rays future plans with Upton starting at 2B, so it shouldn't take that much to acquire him. It would give the Mets a platoon partner for this season, and maybe even a starter for '08.
