Reds and Angels Discuss Dunn
According to Ben Bolch of the L.A. Times, the Angels had preliminary discussions with the Reds regarding Adam Dunn. Bolch's source indicates that talks died because the Reds requested "a proven Major League starting pitcher, a Major League infielder - preferably a second baseman - and a top prospect."
Translation: Wayne Krivsky wanted Ervin Santana, Erick Aybar, and Brandon Wood. OK, that sounds absurd. And Aybar is a shortstop. Negotiation is all about asking for more than you want and meeting at the right place, but I can't figure out what the Reds asked for. There's no way they asked for the above with a straight face. Maybe they wanted Santana and Howie Kendrick? But then a top prospect on top? C'mon now. Bolch's source says the Halos wouldn't trade Kendrick for Dunn straight up.
Santana plus one other useful player would be a fine bounty for Dunn, who will reach free agency after the season if he's traded.
I have a correction, as I earlier wrote that Krivsky could simply exercise Dunn's 2008 option and then retain freedom to trade him. That's not exactly true. The situation, according to Ken Rosenthal:
"If the Reds keep Dunn and exercise his option after the season, he will gain full no-trade protection until next June 15. After that date, he could be traded to 10 clubs, but the list would be of his own choosing."
By the way, the Angels may turn their attention back to Miguel Tejada if they can't get Dunn. The Halos are again interested in him, according to the Riverside Press Enterprise.

what happened to brandon phillips? jeez, if i'm krivsky i'd be doing cartwheels to get santana and one of the angels relievers for dunn...let alone brandon wood or howie kendrick

Actually if Dunn's option is picked up he recieves a full no trade clause.

I even imagine ol' Bill "Stoneface" stoneman laughed at that. How about santana and aybar for dunn? Ok, I personally think this may be too much for dunn. But, sometimes you have the luxary of giving up too much value to get something you think you need. Santana just cannot figure out how to find success away from the angels home field. They have Joe Saunders at Triple A, but Saunders did seem to do very well in his short stint earlier this year, and he probably could give better production than santana. The other part of the trade is basically the same idea, as the angels have basically the same type of player in chone figgins and eric aybar. I know the angels have been looking for a power hitting third baseman, and in that deal they probably would have moved either aybar or figgins in the trade. In just seems to make sense that if the angels wanted dunn bad enough, they could more than afford to give away santana and aybar, or heck even figgins if they are high on aybar, I just personally think aybar will not produce offensively on a regular basis like figgins does. But I do think dunn, even though he is overrated, could make the angels even more dangerous.

Where are the Angels going to put Dunn? Even though he is washed up GA will in the lineup. Willits has been a critical part of this lineup, and unless he radically slows down the Club would be crazy to bench him.
The Club also has Juan Rivera coming back in a month.
Is Dunn that much of an improvement over Dunn or Willits? Worth giving up a player, Santana, who is not eligible for FA until after the 2011 season, and other premier prospects?
No
The Angels should be exclusively persuing a power hitting 3B. There is significantly more value added here than at any other position.

Err...
Is Dunn that much of an improvement over Rivera or Willits?

i hope KW is busting his butt trying to work with anaheim to either trade them dye or thome. the sox desperate needs are bullpen and middle infielders. the angels are stocked in both of those areas. i'd love to see aybar or wood or shields etc in a sox uni in '08

I hadn't heard that about Dunn getting a no-trade if it's exercised. Do you have a link?

It's a problem the Angels will gladly deal with. Garret Anderson should be removed from the lineup. There's no guarantee that Rivera comes back hitting, nor is there any guarantee that Willits and Kotchman continue to rake.
Between DH, 1B, and LF, LA would be able to find a spot for Dunn almost everyday. Hillenbrand and Anderson shouldn't play another game if it can be avoided.

Corrected the post above, thanks schellis.

does anyone think the reds could get Santana and Willits for Dunn

This is just me, but I get the feeling that Santana pitching in Cinci can turn ugly for all parties involved. Besides whoever is playing Cinci. I mean, he has great stuff but he is so inconsistent. I guess a change of scenerey could do good, but I dont get it. He was average last year, he was shopped all winter, have been hearing his name all season. The angels know something about him that we dont. Maybe an injury history, maybe they just think he isnt going to develop much more. I would be really careful of santana though.

GA should be removed from the lineup--but the sad reality is that he will not unless he is injured.
Kotchman raked in AAA and raked at the end of 2005. He raked in ST 2006, yet due to mono his production last year was awful.
Kotchman is for real, and the team can expect a .800 OPS+ from him.
While Willits has demonstrated a high proclivity to get on base the past few years, I doubt he maintains at his current pace. That said, few could in the entire game. Willits will settle down to have a .400 OBP+ and play superior OF defense.
Rivera is a crap shoot, yet the team needs to see if he can bring anything to the table in July.
Los Angeles should hold off with ANY trades until the last week of July to give more time to the evaluation of the kids currently producing at the MLB club.
As an Angel fan I would not trade Santana and Willits for Dunn, frankly I would rather trade Weaver than Santana.

" Ok, I personally think this may be too much for dunn. But, sometimes you have the luxary of giving up too much value to get something you think you need."
Bingo. I know the opinions on Dunn differ pretty much every where you look, but great point. The halos are loaded with talent in their system. They need a big power guy to protect vlad. They are poised to make a run at a ring this year and getting Dunn would really solidify that offense. If im the angels I make the deal for Aybar and Santana. Same goes for the dodgers, but really the Angels because I think they are the better team who is looking to make a run at the world series this year. It would make beating Detroit or Boston in the playoffs easier with a guy like Dunn so the other team cant just blatantly pitch around Vlad.

a MLB Starter, MLB IF and Prospect?
Ok, we'll (A's) give him (Lenny DiNardo or Joe Kennedy or Esteban Loaiza), Dan Johnson and (Kevin Melillo or Donnie Murphy).
