All Eyes On Contreras

Buster Olney says that Jose Contreras may be the best available starting pitcher at the moment, which speaks to how weak the market is.  Olney lists the Cubs, Braves, Marlins, Indians, and Phillies as teams on hand to watch his six inning, five run performance Sunday night in Baltimore.

To call Contreras the best available indicates that Javier Vazquez is off the market.  Contreras's challengers still include Matt Morris, Dontrelle Willis, and Jason Jennings.  If the Pirates were to inexplicably consider trading Ian Snell, he'd easily jump to the forefront.  That he's even available is a dubious rumor at this point.

As for Contreras, his junk might work over in the NL.  Maybe that's why four of the five teams watching his start reside in that league.  Olney's scout said he was working at 87-91, though he did touch 94 last night.

Contreras makes another $4MM this year, $10MM in '08, and another $10MM in '09.  That shouldn't scare off too many clubs.  Maybe the Marlins.  With a 2-4% chance at making the playoffs this year the Marlins would be acquiring Contreras more for 2008-09.

Somebody pleeeeeeeeeeease take Contreras.

...and Uribe, and Dye, and Iguchi.

Pleeeeeeeeeeeease.

You know, I wonder if the Braves would take a guy like Dontrelle Willis. He's had a rough year and could revive his season as a Brave. He would probably be cheap. Maybe Yunel and a prospect.

The Braves should try to after contrares with their middle infield depth and see if they can get him, hopefully without getting yunel escobar.

Chipper, come on bud. You cannot be this ignorant. Dontrelle Willis may be struggling this year, and yes he is overrated, but he still would probably require salty at least. He still is only 25 and has had multiple years of success at the major league level, plus he has proven to be durable. Those are things of tremendous value, and plus i only see the marlins moving willis if they get a great young centerfielder in return.

Fish seem to be getting a lot of rumors about potentially buying. Our lineup has been very good just the injuries have killed us because of the lack of pitching.

Contreas would be good in the NL I think. That said I dont know if loria would spend this year for the investment.

Of course we do have a bunch of under 500 teams coming up this month. I believe we have 1 out of the next 6 teams are over 500 (need to check the schedule again to be sure). So it could be a good chance to jump into this thing. Still I think we are built for a next year's run despite the amazing miggy and hanley preformances this year.

As for Willis to the braves I doubt it would happen even if the braves offer salty. Fish dont wanna trade him in division and supposedly he hasnt been put on the market at all yet.

Yeah, that is a good point, because they have made it clear they do not want to help out any divison foes on more than on occasion.

Bravesbeast, sorry, I realized I had made that mistake. I meant to say Salty. But now that I think about it. I'd rather trade Salty for Gorz or Snell.

It's cool, just saying.

Chipper there is no way you "meant" to say Salty. If no one said anything you would have continued thinking Yunel + prospect would be a viable offer.

"You know, I wonder if the Braves would take a guy like Dontrelle Willis. He's had a rough year and could revive his season as a Brave. He would probably be cheap. Maybe Yunel and a prospect."

This is just getting silly. First of all, if the MArlins wont trade Willis to the Mets because they are an interdivision rival, why would the braves be any different. This is really getting stupid though, braves fans are being made to look like idiots as a whole because of like 6 really stupid braves fans here that think Yunel and Prado are going to get them Jake Peavy or something. This is almost getting more absurd then all of the Cubs fans talking about Jacque Jonez and Ronny Cedeno for every guy in the league.

How come if the Braves or the Mets want Willis they cant just work out a trade and trade deal with somebody else. Some american league team that Fla would not object to trading willis too, then they turn around and flip Willis back to the NL east team that wants him (if the braves or mets do indeed want him.).

Do you know how complicated that could turn out to be? Definitely not practical, and the price tag for D-Train is too high, that's why he hasn't moved. If the Fish think that they are going to be in the race til then end, then he isn't going anywhere.

The fish might still be in it in SPITE of Dontrelle. With the way he's pitching why anyone in contention would take him is beyond me. Same for Contreras.

in spite of Olsen, Obermueller, and Kim as well. None of them have pitched well. Mitre is carrying that rotation. Think of what we'd be saying if their pitching was performing up to potential...we'd all be saying the fish are a playoff team.

Sean Marshall and a low level prospect for Jose Contreras and Jermaine Dye.

Why the heck would the Indians be scouting Contreras? I mean, I don’t think anyone in the AL is really pushing for him and I cant see any reason the Indians would want him other than to possibly put him in the bullpen in an effort to keep him away from one of our competitors… (for some reason the guy owns us in important games)

I think it’s more likely we were scouting Balt… Walker, Bradford or Mora, maybe?

Our team can’t stand the ChiSox, and the feeling is mutual… I doubt they ever pull a deal off

“Sean Marshall and a low level prospect for Jose Contreras and Jermaine Dye.”

No offence Teetz, but I think the ChiSox would want more than a pitcher with consistent shoulder problems and a nobody prospect for two of the most desirable players rumored to be available…

Dye is really the only good OFer really rumored and Tim says that JoseC is probably the best pitcher ~ I just think it might take a bit more if KW was asking for the 2 top prospects from any team for Dye alone just 2 weeks ago…

I honestly don't think any team is going to give up much for either Contreras or Dye and they'll have to settle for a good lefty that will be in their starting rotation for the next 5-6 years cheap.

Conteras and Dye's health problems only lower their trade value.

If Contreras is desirable, I hate to see what is undesirable. You just said it yourself, no AL team would want him, maybe a handful of NL teams, their not going to get much from him. Unless Duquette "thinks they still have a shot".

"Conteras and Dye's health problems only lower their trade value"

But couldn’t the same be said about Marshall since he has had 3 straight seasons with time lost to shoulder problems and 4 straight with an injury in general?

They could trade JoseC and Dye to separate teams and bring in some value. Playing good or not, they are still the best on the market and someone will be willing to pay it...

Agree to an extent...
AL teams dont want him as much because AL teams dont need the starters as much as the NL-E teams do. The Indians biggest competitors (like I was referring to) wouldn’t get him anyway because he’s already in the AL-C and the ChiSox wouldn’t help a rival. What his value is though doesnt even matter too much because Dye himself would be worth at least a comparable package to what was proposed. I hate the ChiSox, but even I would want them to get more for the only really available OFer (well Dunn is maybe avail, but we dont know for sure) They would be just as well off keeping Contreras and letting Dye walk for the DPs than if they were to accept that deal.

You know the Fish have been rumored to be interested in Dye before perhaps they were scouting him as well again.

He would be a big bat and in a pressure off situation down here it could be interesting. This assumes of course we can swipe some games and get close to the NL East still.

First i would like to say there is no way the ChiSOX make a trade for another quality lefty starter. They have Buehrle wrapped up now and John Danks has been a pleasant surprise on the south side this yr. Honestly i see kenny williams unloading Dye for some good prospects, and who has better prospects and more need for an all-star MVP caliber vet? The marlins. But i don't know jack about their farm system.

All i know is i want Hanley Ramirez on my team, even if it takes sellin the farm or signing him to a ridiculous long term deal in the off season
