« Pie For Laird and Mahay? | Main | The Market For Eric Gagne »
UPDATE: ESPN adds that one of the pitching prospects is Neftali Feliz.
According to Ken Rosenthal, the deal is finally done, pending a review of medical records. The Braves will receive Mark Teixeira and lefty reliever Ron Mahay, while the Rangers will get Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Elvis Andrus, and two pitching prospects. Matt Harrison is said to be one of them; his MRI today came up clean.
I'll have some analysis of the deal once we have all the details. Kind of makes tomorrow anticlimactic, doesn't it?

"The last time I looked the Phillies were 3 1/2 back and the Braves 4.5. I also note that Beltran is heading to the DL. You really feel confident about sitting pat?"
Beltran has not helped this team this year. I am much more conifdent with Milledge in centerfield RIGHT NOW then I would be with Beltran. The mets have a 4.5 game lead despite HORRIBLE years from Beltran and Delgado, Wright taking off a month and a half, Lo Duca and Green playing like crap. I dont even care that Beltran is on the DL. If I was Omar I would look into trading him in the offseason and giving Milledge/Gomez the CF spot. Shed some salary, get some prospects, go after Arod, move Wright to second base. Thats what I would do.

"Anyone outside of New York will be heartened that you are resting your playoff hopes on two brittle players that have made the DL their most played at position over the last two years"
Haha to me this sounds like the same haters saying things like...." too anybody outside NY relying on guys like John Maine and Oliver Perez is great for the Phils and the BRaves!" How did that work out fellas? We will see who is laughing when the season ends. Beltran has been horrendous this year. We survived without him so far. I too would take Milledge/ Alou over Beltran, Easley/ Anderson also. RIGHT NOW. Milledge has a better bat then Beltran right now, no arguing it. Beltran has had like 3 good games that make his numbers look respectable by adding like 5 HR and 12 RBI in 3 good games. He really has been bad.

I really wouldn't be against trading Beltran. He's an incredible defensive OFer, arguably one of the best in baseball. However, he lacks any consistency with his bat whatsoever.
I salivate at the thought of Milledge and Gomez in the same outfield. Since Alou and Green are gone at the end of the year, I think they have spots locked up. If Beltran could be moved for something, I wouldn't mind seeing some pitching come back. Glavine will be gone, and El Duque will be another year older. Plus, we don't know how Pedro is going to look.
I don't know if I move Wright from 3B. If A-Rod demanded to play 3B, then I guess you don't have a choice.

2009 is apparently being billed as "the year the Braves die", but let's take a look at the facts, shall we?
Atlanta currently has $47.5M locked up for that season as follows: $13M for Hudson, $8M* for Chipper, $3.5M for McCann, $11M* for Rentaria and $12M* for Smoltz. Many of you have speculated (and I agree) that Smoltz and Chipper are likely to retire by then; I would also add that the Braves are likely to make the RedSox pay for Rents' buyout rather than excersize his option. That would mean that the Braves are probably looking at only the $16.5M for Huddy and Heap, plus whatever they give the rest of the youngsters in contracts/arbitration. You might think that this leaves Atlanta devoid of talent, but think again.
2B - Kelly Johnson
3B - Yunel Escobar
C - Brian McCann
OF - Jeff Francouer
1B - Kala Ka'aihue
OF - Brandon Jones
SS - Brent Lillibridge
OF - Free Agent?
As for the rotation, Huddy would be the ace followed by developing youngsters like Chuck James, the best of the Harrison/Reyes/Smith trio and the cream of the next-gen crop. The Braves have a great deal of young depth as far as relievers are concerned, but the headliners are likely to be Gonzalez and Soriano. They are by no means our only hope for the back-end, but they're the most notable ones now.
Free agents are likely to help out, due to the fact that the payroll budget is likely to increase and the lack of big money contracts at that time. Potential free agents include Johan Santana, Jake Peavy, C. C. Sabathia, Brad Penny, Ben Sheets, Oliver Perez and Jon Garland for the rotation; Brad Lidge and Francisco Rodriguez for the 'pen; Carl Crawford, Vladimir Guerrero and Ken Griffey Jr. for the outfield.
All in all, I like this deal because it used our strengths to help our weaknesses. Regardless of what happens with Salty, Elvis and the rest, this trade makes the Braves better now and really does not jeopardize the future.

"Your Mets are not the juggernaut that everyone predicted and that is tearing you apart inside isn't it? I think you just a little bitter because your Mets aren't doing anything to get better/younger."
Yeahh, umm, who has the best record in the league? Lol how about those cardinals. I think your the one who is mad your team isnt getting better and younger. The cards are like the worst team there is right now. Lets see where they can get better/younger. Every spot in the rotation, second base, shortstop, 3rd base, left field, right field, centerfield. Wow, the Cards are really looking up. Atleast you have that AMAZING farm system to look forward to rofl. Jersey, if Wright didnt want to swtich positions I wouldnt even consider it. If it was okay with him it would be okay with me.

I know you're a Braves fan, but that's incredibly weak in terms of talent. Kelly Johnson is still living off a great April. McCann has reverted back to his 2005 self, and Jeff Francoeur's not come close to sniffing an .800 OPS as a corner outfielder. Yunel Escobar posted a .730 OPS as a 23 year old in AA last year. That's as silly as the Mets holding up Ruben Gotay as some stud future puzzle piece.

If you want a decent return for Beltran in in terms of pitching, you will have to eat a large portion of that enourmous contract you guys signed him to. With the high asking price of pitching during the dealine this year, it would not even be worth it for the Mets to trade Beltran. They would want a proven starter (Garland?) and Kenny Williams or any other GM wouldn't take on a big salary and trade away a top tier pitcher in this market.

JerseyMetFan, you aren't getting it. I think the Braves will get that starter. Supposedly they are after Dotel and their beat writer, David O'Brien, reported last night that the Braves are after a starter. It is a starter whose name has not been mentioned in trade rumors. You never underestimate JS. O'Brien doesn't put info out there unless he has very credible sources. That tells me the Braves are going for broke. They upgrade the pen with Mahay and Dotel. They upgrade the offense with Teixera. Question is now who will upgrade the rotation?

nrmax88--I'm not gonna take the bait. Atlanta's a great city and so is New York. Good point about Atlanta fans not being able to sell our place out though. That really bothers hardcore Braves fans like myself, but I guess alot of fans just chose to stop paying attention after getting their hearts broken 3, 4, 5 times.
Posted by: WesleyC | July 30, 2007 at 02:09 PM
I'm not underestimating JS at all. I'm aware that he's widely considered a great GM. I'll remain skeptical until I actually hear that the Dotel deal, as well as a deal for a SP has been completed. Then, I'll worry :)

Wow, do we have a bunch of 13 year olds posting on this site? I'm a Braves fan, but reading all of these comments make me sick. All I've heard is from non-Mets fans: "Great trade for both sides." From Braves fans: "Nice deal. I don't like that we gave up that much, but JS knows what he is doing." Then you have the Mets fans: "HAHA, the Mets are going to win. Lets hijack the thread and talk about how the Mets are!"
Seriously, some of these posters on this site just need to get a life and realize not every post has to be about how your team is better than our team. As for the trade, I'm not sure what to make of it. I was okay when I found out it was Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Elivis Andrus, but now that Tim has updated the post to say Feliz (plus another pitching prospect) has been involved, I'll give the nod to the Rangers. If you don't know about Feliz, in my opinion, he has the highest upside of all the pitchers in the Braves system. I like the fact that we acquired a LOOGY and a productive first baseman. I think this is a win-win deal with the Braves going towards winning this year and next, and the Rangers getting a lot of potential.
"The good thing for the rest of the division is that what the Braves acquired will have walked by 2009 and the cupboard will be bare in the minors."
Wow, this shows how ignorant you really are. I guess our system is barren because we lost all of the big names? We still have Matt Harrison, Tommy Hanson, Van Pope, Eric Campbell, Brent Lillibridge, Brandon Jones, Dan Smith, Will Startup (I think that's his name,) Brandon Heyward, Jon Gilmore, Cody Johnson and Manny Acosta.
Let's do some research before we post some time.

the deal sends Tex. and Mahay to the braves for salty, Anders ,feliz, and a player to be named later
Posted by: jaysfan | July 30, 2007 at 02:33 PM
Hmmm Zach... I don't recall anyone laughing at the trade. Care to point that out?
"Let's do some research before we post some time."
Just because we aren't Braves fans doesn't mean we have to blow our load all over the deal. If we feel that the Mets are still the better team, we're going to say so. It's an honest opinion, and a valid one at that seeing as a lot of people (posters and columnists) seem to think this makes the Braves the team to beat in the NL East.

I've got a nice summary of the players Texas got back in the deal, as well as my own takes on the trade, over at:
