Dotel Would Like Contract Extension

While Octavio Dotel is very likely to be traded by the Royals, he said yesterday that he'd like to talk about a contract extension to stay.  It's possible but doesn't seem likely.

Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star says Dotel would probably look for something around three years, $21MM, which the Royals could afford.  Locking him in would allow Joakim Soria or Zack Greinke to move to the rotation.

It still looks like Dotel will end up a Dodger or Indian by Tuesday though.  The names we've heard so far include Franklin Gutierrez, Ben Francisco, Chin-Ling Hu, and Tony Abreu

The question is if Dotel is strong enough for the Dodgers disimated staff

"disimated"?

Signing Dotel long-term doesn't make a ton of sense for a rebuilding KC team right now. They could have Soria, Greinke, or even Riske takeover the closer's role for a fraction of what Dotel will get paid.

I don't really see the Dodgers pitching as being decimated. Lowe and Penny are not expected to miss their next starts.

Rotation:

Penny
Lowe
Billingsley
Hendrickson
Tomko

Wolf will be back in a week or two which will move someone to the pen.

Then you have Houlton and Stults who can also start.

Bullpen:
Houlton
Seanez
Hull
Hernandez
Beimel
Broxton
Saito

So they need a RH 7th inning guy to split time with Beimel. Hull looks like he could handle it to me. Maybe Tomko gets it back together and could do it. I don't see how trading your future SS or 2B for two months of a guy who's going to pitch half of your seventh innings is a good idea. I'd rather go after Paul Shuey or just let Hull have a chance.

For what it's worth, there is supposed to be an announcement at a 4PM press conference in Cleveland.

Not sure if it is for Dotel or not.

The report from Cleveland said it was a big deal for a reliever, so i'm thinking it may be Dotel.

Who would they give up? Gutierrez? Francisco? Lofgren?

If it was Lofgren for Dotel, that would be the first time I just flat out disagreed with Shapiro.

Hendrickson and Tomko are a liability. Wolf and Kuo are a ways away.Lowe could end up on the DL. I personally like a refreshed D-Train over Dotel. PS Indians got Lofton so is that your 4pm news

Have you um, been following baseball this season? Tomko's been pitching about as well as Willis this season anyways and word is he's not available. It sounds like Dotel doesn't want to be traded, too bad for him because it sure sounds like he's going somewhere.

I'm just saying a change of scenery may be what Willis needs. Could not you see him at IN & OUT Burger with his best friend Juan P

Kuo is out for the season most likely, but Wolf should be back in about 10 days. Hendrickson really hasn't been that bad(esp. as a RP), so I think they can do pretty well with what they have. Meloan can come up in September or sooner if they need him. If Tomko bombs in the rotation then Stults or Houlton could get a shot.

Cleveland press conference is about Lofton not Dotel...

Teetz,
I think you would like to see a starter for LA?

Mentioned it in the other thread, but I think the Tribe will be trying to hold onto FrankieG to play RF and would be instead only offering BenFran for RP pitching. Francisco isn’t a strong enough RFer, and with Kenny coming in BenFran doesn’t have a spot.

And I strongly agree with NickJS and say a Lofgren for Dotel deal would be horrible and honestly one no Indians fan would agree with. If that’s the price then I saw we end all talks with KC…
