« Latest On Jermaine Dye | Main | White Sox Discuss Vazquez, Garland »
UPDATE: A source of mine says that despite Hendry's claims to the contrary, Pie was dangled. Since no deal could be reached, it makes sense to say publicly that he was never available. The source adds that Hendry continues to search for a bat this morning.
Multiple sources had been saying Felix Pie was available, so it's nice to see Cubs GM Jim Hendry debunk that talk today. He won't be traded, and hasn't been discussed. Cubs fans can exhale.

So with Pie out of the picture(thank god!), any chance of the cubs getting anybody?

How stupid has Phil Rogers been this year? Felix Pie in a package for Gerald Laird? It's ridiculous that Jim Hendry even had to field that rumor.

Teetz...
I agree...he had to be making that up out of the blue...because it never made any sense whatsoever. The Cubs best prospect in years for a average at best catcher and reliever? I don't get it...

Finally, someone talks about Hendry trying to get a bat. Cub beat reporters are horrible and never once mentioned a power corner outfield bat a possibility. We have a huge hole at the #5 spot with well below average production from Floyd/Derosa/Jones. Hendry may very well make a big splash, ala '03 and '04.

"Felix Pie is not going anywhere and has never been talked about," Hendry said. "It's really unfair to the young man to have to hear that on television or read about it in the paper that he's being shopped around. It couldn't be farther from the truth. It's not good journalism, to be honest with you. There's not one club we've talked to in any deal about Felix Pie."
That was a pretty strong statement by Hendry. Maybe he did discuss him, but I'm sorry, I just don't believe it was in the context of Laird....
Teetz,
I think you are right. I really think our bullpen is solid, and we may even be adding to it with Wood coming. If not, still, its pretty solid. Catcher isn't a weakness of ours, Blanco should come back just in time for the stretch run, and until then, we are at least average and Kendall is finally starting to hit a little bit. Our biggest need is a RF...a splash would be nice and I would be willing to part with a Patterson\Veal to get one.
Is there any chance at all that Rios is available? He would be awesome in RF and I would give up any combination of three or four prospects to get him....and even think about including Pie in that.

Now that I see Johnny Gomes could be had, I'd like to see Hendry pull the trigger on him. He seems like a guy who can help now and in the future. Similar to the deal Hendry made in 2003 to get Aramis Ramirez, where he bought low on a guy with a high ceiling.
