Rockies Hunting For Relief Help
Playoff odds reports put the Rockies' chances at 6-8% currently, but they still view themselves as buyers. After all, they're still just 4.5 games out of the Wild Card and 5.5 games out in the NL West.
Though a crude metric, the Rockies' bullpen currently ranks 12th in the NL with a 4.42 ERA. Among contenders in the league, only Philadelphia has been worse. Brian Fuentes seems at least another week or two from returning. According to Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post, Rockies GM Dan O'Dowd has been burning up the phone lines looking for a reliever. Renck says the Rockies have inquired on Jon Rauch, Chad Cordero, Akinori Otsuka, Julian Tavarez, and Manny Delcarmen.
Of that list, only Rauch or Cordero are clearly available and would help the team. Otsuka is hurt, Delcarmen is cheap and an essential part of the Boston bullpen, and Tavarez isn't a great pitcher. However, both Rauch and Cordero are flyball pitchers and may not succeed at Coors Field. Given the high price for either, the Rockies don't have any attractive options.

I'm listening on all Tavarez offers, but I doubt MDC goes anywhere. I would love to see the Helton talks revisited, anyway though..What would the Rox give up for him though? Prospect? I guy I really like is Joe Koshansky, but it would probably take alot more than Hoolian to get him..

if they're looking for awful Red Sox relievers, I'm sure Joel Pinero could be had for a bag of balls.

He was already DFA, so yeah, a bag of balls is alot more then we will actually get

He will be when they activate Jon Lester. Tavarez may be a good option for the rockies because he is a ground ball pitcher. That goes with Coors Field. I would also like to see the helton talks revisted.

Terry Francona said postgame yesterday that he will be DFA'd today.

Yeah Pinero wont be traded because of the DFA. But I can see them dumping tavarez. I imagine the rockies will only give up prospects though. I cant forsee them passing LA, SD, and AZ to take their division though, so really they should give up on the chase and send the Sox Holliday for batshit and a bag of magic beans. HA

I think the Sox should keep Tavarez, who has become Manny's best friend and spokesman, for the rest of the year. He can mop up if the starters ger roughed up. If the Sox could get a hackey sack for Pineiro they should jump at the chance. He has fallen from potential closer to a guy with no job.
