Rosenthal's Latest: Andruw, Lidge, Gwynn Jr.

Ken Rosenthal has a new Full Count video up at FOXSports for your viewing pleasure.

  • Rosenthal believes that despite Andruw Jones's lousy May and June, he'll still cash in this winter as the best available center fielder.  He'll still provide more offense than Torii Hunter in the long run.
  • The Nationals are still asking for the moon in trade talks.  If Jim Bowden does start acting reasonable, Dmitri Young, Chad Cordero, Jon Rauch, and Ryan Church could be dealt.  Word via Bill Ladson of MLB.com is that only the Braves have inquired on Young.
  • Brad Lidge is expected to remain an Astro.  The main reason: Drayton McLane still doesn't think  his team is out of it.  Most simulations a 2% chance or less of reaching the playoffs.  If the Astros finally do acknowledge reality, they'd prefer to trade relievers other than Lidge (ie, Dan Wheeler or Chad Qualls).
  • The Rangers and Brewers were close to a trade: Akinori Otsuka to the Brewers for Tony Gwynn Jr.  Rosenthal seemed to dislike it, but I think it made sense for the Crew.  Regardless, Bill Hall's injury thwarted the deal as Gwynn will be needed to man center.
  • The new plan for the Brewers is to call up 29 year-old Grant Balfour, who's dominated in the minors.  He endured elbow and shoulder woes before undergoing Tommy John surgery in May of '05.  In the midst of his TJ recovery, Balfour developed the need for shoulder surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff and labrum.  This guy would be pumping gas if he'd been born a few decades earlier.  After the surgeries, the Twins cut Balfour and the Reds snagged him.  Balfour rehabbed with the Reds but never made it to the bigs; the Brewers claimed him off waivers in October of '06.  He's all the way back; Johnny Estrada was singing his praises back in February.

Bill Hall injury or not I'm absolutely pissed the Brewers weren't all over this deal.

Call up Nix and Gross to replace Hall until he gets back.

We need another bullpen arm and Otsuka was #1 on my list.

The friggin problem with the Astros is that they will play just good enough to make you think that they might be able to just barely squeak something out. When the truth is that at this point in time, the Astros are out of contention and need to rebuild thier Farm System. If I was Drayton and Tim P. I would unload every lost soul on that team expect Roy O., Lance Berkman, Carlos Lee, Hunter Pence, and Chris Sampson. Dump everyone else for prospects and then call up a bunch of no names to finish the year off. THen, next year...do all over again.

Astros fan, apart from those guys, your team doesn't have much that would get people excited and get those prospects you want.
Lidge, Qualls and Wheeler is about it, and their values are not exactly rising.

Well the Nats are not gonna get NO deal done if they keep asking for players like Escobar AND Salty for Dmitri Young. And I do not know what they would be asking for Cordero, probably alot more.

kevin towers if this trade about t gwynn jr. is serious you have to get on the phone with the brewers this second and offer up whichever bullpen arm they want besides bell. are you kidding me if they are willing to trade gwynn jr. for a relief pitcher that is perfect for us give them two something like linebrink, ring or merideth hampson. get it done kt.

Jim Bowden has to be one of the dumbest GM's in baseball as far as trades go. He held on to Soriano last year when he could have at least traded him for a few decent prospects and gotten something out of the deal. Now he;s asking for Escobar and Salty for Young??? What an idiot. One of those guys alone in a straight up trade is too much for Young.

When it comes to the Astros, Lidge's value is not decreasing. Has it decreased since 2005? Yes, of course, but people seem to think that a single A prospect for him would get the deal done. The guy is on his way back and I would prefer the Astros keep him, but I realize he is the only player who could bring back decent propsects which we desperately need. We have tons of pitching in the minor leagues, what we need is a decent 3B or SS prospect. As an Astros fan, I think guys like Lidge, Wheeler, Qualls, Ensberg, Jennings and Lamb should all be moved if they have decent value. All of those except for Lidge are free agents in the next year or two anyway, so we might as well get something for them while we still can.

I never in my life thought somebody was seriously say offer them any arm they want as long as it isnt heath bell. As a Met fan this makes me chuckle. How one teams garbage is another treasure.

"How one teams garbage is another treasure."

That can only be so if one man's garbage is filtered through the New York media to enhance that garbage's value.

Update soon to come, but the sox have signed buerhle to a 4 year extension. It was announced on the big screen right after the sox game. No details on what the specifics of the deal are, or what the no trade clause includes.

I'm not suite sure what your trying to say, my main point was Heath Bell was horrible in NY, and was going back and forth from AAA like once a week and now he is dominating.

quite*

Not really sure what that has to do with the media.

biprobertsstilltheman, you would give up Linebrink for Gwynn? Seriously?

With the Mariners 2.5 games back, how long before we start seeing their name popping up as buyers?

That team is full of holes, but their bullpen saves every lead. They need help at all the corners, at DH, and a starting pitcher.

They've got good trade bait in C Jeff Clement, CF Adam Jones, RP Brandon Morrow, and more.

Isn't Hoffman still in that bullpen? I guess he's expendable.
