Rosenthal's Latest: Sexson, Dye
I feel bad for Ken Rosenthal's family, as they won't be seeing much of him until August 1st. He's got another update for us tonight.
- The Mariners are hoping to unload Richie Sexson; can you blame them? To trade for Sexson now would be insane, even with the Ms eating half of the $14MM he's owed in 2008. He has shown almost no signs of life this season. Rosenthal suggests a Sexson for Matt Morris swap but I'd much rather have Morris.
- The Brewers have considered the possibility of a Jermaine Dye trade. Kenny Williams apparently wants Derrick Turnbow or Manny Parra, which actually sounds reasonable.
- Rosenthal also has some info regarding role players Jeff Conine and Mark Loretta. But even I have a hard time getting worked up over that. I'd like to see a new, interesting name tossed into the rumor mill. Like when Roy Oswalt came up a year ago. How about Rafael Furcal or Jim Thome? They're free agents after the '08 season, they should be semi-available.

When Pedroia was going badly for the RS, i joked about a campaign to trade to get Loretta back, it would just be funny if it actually happened.
Sexson or Morris.. hmm..

Well, I agree. Why wouldn't Ned Colletti try trading Rafael Furcal? Especially if the Dodgers have any ideas of signing ARod this winter. Jeff Kent will probably reach 550 ABs for his 2008 option to kick in, and Juan Pierre is locked in as the Dodger lead-off hitter for four more years. Why hold on to Furcal? It could be a great salary dump, and the Dodgers have like 10 guys who can play multiple infield positions(even Olmedo Saenz fat ass can play 1B and a little 3B!) The Dodgers desperately need pitching now, starting and relief. Watching Rudy Seanez give up a grand slam to Craig Biggio today was unneccesary.

Thome has an option for 09 plus a full NTC, and Furcal's a big part of the Dodgers' line up, a contender. Don't see it happening, but what about D-Backs selling parts? It seems like they can do without Tracy, O-Dog, Livan, and Byrnes. Maybe sell on Carlos Gonzalez.

Again, KW has to seriously consider keeping Dye, whether to re-sign him another season or two or to just let him go for the high draft pick they'll get.

When people think how drekky Sexson is, I just see an opportunity to buy low. His BABIP is like .211 and is a good bet to hit 30 homers and a .250 average next year or whatever. If they ate salary I'd go for him.

I'd much rather have Turnbow or Parra than a high draft pick, any day

Sexson seems to me like the type of guy that the Braves would get and turn back into a 40-hr hitter. They will most likely lose A. Jones next year. It sounds silly, but Jones and Sexon have had very similar numbers the last few years, even this year. If they can get him with no big name prospects and only have to pay 6 or 7 mil next year, it may be a not so crazy idea. I doubt they have the cash freed up to cover the rest of this season though.

Not commenting on whether Sexson to the Braves is a good idea, but they have the cash. They already had a couple million to work with before the season started and insurance is expected to pick up the majority of Mike Hampton's salary.

Manny Parra and Turnbow are nice options, but I would sure love to see some hitters. And the problem with Turnbow is that he is in the same mold as the current sox relievers - velocity, no location.

I think a lot of the Dye to the Cubs deal would depend on how high KW thinks of Ronny Cedeno. Personally, I hate his glove and arm but he's been raking at an unreal pace in AAA this year.

Would Thome waive his no trade to goto the braves? Salty/Renteria for Vasquez/Thome? Phils pay half Thomes salary so he would cost the same as Renteria give or take a few mil. Might need slight tweek but seems somewhat reasonable - except to those that regard salty as the second coming of ted williams.

I think Thome's career as a 1B is over. He got hurt this year playing 1B in interleague play. His bat is still top notch, though.

So the NL has a DH slot now?

Tim, are you just stretching there, or is there some truth to Thome or Furcal?
Wouldn't the Cubs do well to trade a combo of either Fontenot/Cedeno plus say, Cherry/Petrick for Furcal and salary help?
The Dodgers could then bring up Abreu or Hu, or trade them for another arm.

Did I miss something....when did Thome get hurt in interleague play? He was coming back from a previous injury around interleague 'season' if that's what you mean, but he wasn't hurt at least not that I can remember.

100% speculation on my part

I could live with Turnbow for Dye. So long as Milwaukee acquires another arm to replace Turnbow. I would hate to see Turnbow in a key post season situation.
