Scouts Monitoring Yanks/Blue Jays Yesterday

The New York Post reports of several teams represented at yesterday's Yankees/Blue Jays contest.  The Dodgers, Twins, Tigers, and Marlins all had scouts on hand.  So which players were being watched?

The starters were Dustin McGowan and Chien-Ming Wang, and we can safely assume neither of those guys is going anywhere.

Possible Yankees being watched: Scott Proctor, Kyle Farnsworth, Bobby Abreu, Melky Cabrera, Luis Vizcaino.  Vizcaino and Cabrera played in the game, though they are the least likely of the group to be dealt.

Possible Blue Jays being watched: Scott Downs, Matt Stairs, Troy Glaus.  Stairs is probably the Jay most likely to be traded; he's hitting a strong .282/.348/.544 in 206 ABs.  He's known for his ability to hit righthanders well.

Feel free to mix and match in the comments - who's after which players?

I'd guess the Dodgers were scouting Glaus

Along with the Dodgers, the Twins could really use Glaus

I could see the Tigers interested in Farnsworth if NY offered to pay some salary.

The Dodgers need a starter bad...Glaus would fit..But Willis/Cabrera would be better

pipe dream

The padres should get Glaus

As a BJays fan I would be reluctant for them to get rid of Glaus, but if they could get a guy who could play good defense at 3rd and steal bases or a catcher who could actually throw out a runner once and a while it would be less of a heart break.

I dont see Glaus getting moved because the Jays still consider themselves a legitimate contender in 08. I do see stairs being moved to the NL for a B level prospect.

I highly doubt Scott Downs is available, if a Pen arm is available I'd guess it'd be Jason Frasor.

As for Glaus I don't expect to see him get delt unless it fills 2 Holes for next year. Any 2 combo's of the following would do. Catcher, Shortstop, 3rd, and a starter. There has been talk of Thigpen possibly getting played at 2nd base which would move Aaron Hill back to SS. I'd really like to see the jays get a solid young Catcher. I'd love to see the Jays take a shot at Salty but thats not realistic I don't think.

The dodgers were not looking at Glaus and the Jays are not looking to move him. They were prob looking at the Yanks reliever...ugh.

My Gut tells me they were looking at Jays players. If you look at the list of teams, they are all Buyers. As well the Yanks are considered buyers I'd think. Most people would agree the Jays are out of it.

Here is a Rumor I have not heard and I think it would fit the profile. Twins Scouting Matt Stairs to DH or play a Corner OF spot?
Stairs is Producing well he's very versitile, and would come rather cheap.

What are the chances that the Yankees can trade Farnsworth for a decent backup catcher? And what will it take to get Salty from the Braves?

I like the idea of the Jays dealing with the Twins because they have alot of guys who can steal bases and the jays are the worst team in the league in that category. They have all these guys who can knock in the big home run but nobody to manufacture runs. Maybe a Stairs/prospect (Russ Adams Maybe?) for Luis Castillo would work for both clubs. Castillo is a free agent after this year and Aaron hill could switch to SS.

ManBearPig just hand over Phil Hughes and Salty is yours...

It would be stupid to deal Glaus. He's under contract for the next year or two which is a GOOD thing considering the scarcity of infield free agents next year. It's pitiful. His contract is good, he's a good hitter and they have no organizational replcaement. I'd only be happy if they deal him and got back Andy Laroche, or Wilson Betemit plus something else.

Scott DOwns is a terrific reliever. As a reliever his ERA is in the 2's over the last 3 years or so with the Jays (taking out his spot starts where he got smashed). He's really the unheralded hero of the Jays and I think his true worth exceeds his commodity value, though its close because people need pitching. I'd rather keep him for the year. Jason Frasor is talented but inconsistent so I see him as trade bait.

I have heard the rumour of Stairs to the Twins. I heard they were hot for him. I don't see him back next year so that's a possibility. Reed Johnson has no place on the team next year so he's trade bait as well.

I would like the Jays to try and get Saltalamachia. I wonder what it would take. Maybe Shaun Marcum? I bet the Braves would want Dustin McGowan but that ain't happening.

As for the Yankees - they're buyers.

Well Guitar Hero, i do not think that Shaun Marcum will get the deal done, and I am pretty sure the it would take more than McGowan to get Salty as well.

Your crazy bravesbeast. thats a bit of homerism for a mediocre defence good bat catching prospect. McGowan is going to be a very good pitcher. He has good offspeed stuff and throws hard with a changeup. I'd take McGowan ten times over Salty. Marcum would be a good NL pitcher, he's young with lots of service time, so he'd be about right IMO. But McGowan for salty is laughable. I don't think you know too much about him other than his ERA this year.

Well actually Guitar Hero, I do know who dustin McGowan is. I never said he was not a good pitchr, my claim is that he just has not made an impact yet. If the braves are going to trade salty, it is going to be for a number 3 pitcher now who can be an ace in the future. In other words, someone who is doing better than Chuck James. I think that is a pretty fair benchmark in terms of a return for salty, someone who has shown better control and more dominance than james. James has a ERA more than a run lower, more k's and only 10 more walks. McGowan Just has not made enough impact for the Braves to cosider him an option, sorry, but the Braves can find a better bounty than McGowan.

Guitar Hero, I don't think you should be calling anyone out. It is quite obvious you do not know your fair share about Salty. Before you get uppity, I'm not a Braves fan who overvalues him. No, I'm a Detroit fan who has paid him close attention because I see him as the perfect replacement for Pudge. Also, his defense is far from mediocre and his bat has the potential to be excellent. His terrible numbers in Double A last year were the result of an injury, which has healed.

Glaus is going nowhere GM J.P. said "you will have to knock me over to break up the lineup of Johnson/Wells/Glaus/The Big Hurt/Rios".You could put Hill and overbay in their to As for stairs he said he MIGHT want to finish in T.O.(that is he MIGHT)as for frasor is avalible, but we wont get anything for him.Douns is staing becuse they need a lefty beside Ryan unless you want thro tallet in their. But he also could be avalible

Yeah, why does everyone keep saying “He’s just a prospect” or “Salty hasn’t proven anything” ~ I just don’t get what people expect from young guys…

Salty has put up a .278/.331/.414 line in sporadic play his first 2 months of his career. More striking though is this:
.326/.375/.438 in 89AB as C/DH/PH
.182/.245/.364 in 44AB as 1B
… So when he’s not out there learning a new position he is fulfilling his expectations completely. Give him some time to get comfortable in adjusting to ML pitching while also adjusting to a new position and what do you think we should expect?

I mean, it’s great when a guy comes up and overproduces what you expect ~ but that doenst usually mean much at all. Most of the time guys come up and do nothing even close to their expectations and instead have to adjust to the MLs. Salty is doing exactly what the scouts said he should, he’s producing right in the range of the numbers that were expected of him despite being 22 and learning a new position on the job.

What does it take for the guy to get some respect? I mean if someone like Pie was producing like Jarrod is right now, we would probably be hearing “Might as well start engraving his name on the 2009 MVP trophy now” or something like that; but Salty does it and its “well he’s just a prospect”…

the yanks need a DH, glaus will be the perfect one,,

the yanks need torii hunter, right?
