« Olney: Tejada, Piazza Put On Waivers | Main | Multiple Teams Looking At Kielty »
Cardinals center fielder Jim Edmonds has the right to veto any deal as a 10-and-5 player. And while the Cardinals have never asked him to approve a deal, he said recently that he'd be open-minded if the team wanted to move him.
Edmonds makes another $3.66MM this year, plus $8MM in 2008. Some of this year's salary is deferred without interest until 2010-19, making it even better. I have to admit I liked the two-year $19MM pact when it was signed in November of 2006. But the Cardinals did have the choice of simply exercising Edmonds' $10MM option for '07 instead of extending him through '08.
Would Edmonds pass through waivers? Probably. He hasn't shown that he's able to stay healthy and find a rhythm at age 37. While his salary for next year isn't too bad, it still might be a waste of money. Not that the Cardinals would ever help the Cubs, but an Edmonds acquisition would make some sense right now.

Now's not the time to panic. Jim Edmonds is terrible right now. I doubt he finds the fountain of youth in mid August.

I agree, that guy loves to strike out on the high fast ball. Maybe if they would pay half of the remaining money...but that would never happen and Walt is still going to treat him like he is worth a lot more than he really is.
Plus, I think the cards need him at least for next year to bridge the gap until they get to Rasmus, who needs at least another year to develop.

On top of which, the Cubs are not adding ANY payroll to the 2007 team. Hendry and McDonough deny it but actions speak louder than words. The only deals made were to dump salary or were for guys in which salary was all picked up. It looks as if they can't even add one cent.

Plus, Mike Fontenot will probably out-produce Edmonds. As Derosa is probably going to move to RF, Floyd in left, and Fontenot at 2B.

How about Shannon Stewart? Seems like a perfect fit and could even start after Soriano comes back.

Not to mention in the last month, the Cubs have been winning with Sori doing almost nothing. So they can bring Pie back up and he should produce to at least the level Sori was giving us since July 1st.
Floyd\Murton - LF
Pie\Pagan - CF
Jones\DeRosa - RF
That should do very well while Sori is out. I don't see a need for Edmonds

Shannon Stewart would start where?
The one thing we know is that Lou will not keep the same lineup everyday. He's going to play the hot hitters. This just gives him another platoon option.

Shannon Stewart would start in LF everyday that Soriano is out.
Posted by: Teetz | August 06, 2007 at 10:40 AM
....and Stewart would start over Floyd vs. Lefties and CF against some righties. Floyd isn't even giving us any power so no big need to run him out in the 5th spot everyday. He very well could be the worst 5 hole hitter in the league and a glaring hole Hendry didn't address on the trading deadline.

Floyd may not be hitting for power, but he is still hitting. I agree though...its a shame this team has Soriano, Lee, and Ramirez, and yet still has a below average 5 hitter.
Honestly, Derosa is our best 5 hole option right now...but thats at least 3 right hand hitters in a row...and hence the reason Floyd has been hitting 5th...

Floyd is getting on base, but not much else. His abysmal .388 Slugging % is on par with Ryan Theriot and is exceeded by Angel Pagan, Mike Fontenot, and Carlos Zambrano.

How about to the Yankees for Kyle Farnsworth in a straight salary dump?

"He very well could be the worst 5 hole hitter in the league and a glaring hole Hendry didn't address on the trading deadline."
I said this about 3 weeks ago, and you responded with he's tearing the cover off of the ball with RISP...so now you agree with me that he shouldn't be run out there 5 days a week.
You can't put that on Hendry, though. He figured Floyd would hit 20-25 with 400 at bats. Not unreasonable to start the year. But, what is he supposed to go get? You said in the post that he has no money to play with...
Stewart's SLG is .398, so why is he going to help? Sure, he's having a good season, but is he that much better than anyone we already have? He's not a 5 hitter, either.

3 weeks ago you mentioned Floyd can't touch the pitch on the outside corner. Obviously, he can. he can still hit for average, just no power. Shannon Stewart is obviously not a replacement for Floyd (as I said, except against lefties, we're stuck with Floyd in the 5 hole), he'd be a temporary replacement for Soriano, as he is better than Pagan, Murton, and Fontenot. Additionally, he can hit at the top of the order.

"I have to admit I liked the two-year $19MM pact when it was signed in November of 2006."
I can't understand why. He peaked in 2004 and has been on the decline, statically and health wise, ever since. I was absolutely puzzled by that signing.
BTW, I don't mean to be a constant complainer. I LOVE your site!

I was just joking though. Sry, couldnt help it.
Posted by: nrmax88 | August 06, 2007 at 04:21 PM
I saw it and honestly thought he would make it...but either way, I can't concede that. Its too painful as a Cubs fan to have to think about it....

He would have made it. He pulled up lame before Millege even got ride of the ball and was only ten feet off the bad when Wright caught the throw.
