| Cubs Deals For Podsednik, Stewart Dead »

Ken Rosenthal has a new video up; check it out. Some highlights:
- Back in April, I made predictions of whether various club options will be exercised for 2008. My opinion on many of the option decisions has changed since then. One example is Ivan Rodriguez. At the time I said his defense and power would justify the $10MM difference between his $13MM option and $3MM buyout. Currently, Pudge is hitting for his usual decent average but has drawn just five walks in 379 plate appearances. Rosenthal believes the Tigers might opt for the buyout, especially if Rodriguez tails off as the season wears on. Maybe so, but at effectively one year, $10MM, they might still go for it. The other options are limited.
- The Orioles' #1 priority for the offseason is to sign ace Erik Bedard to a long-term contract extension. But if the two parties aren't in the same ballpark, they could exact a king's ransom in a trade. As I said before, Bedard could be a $20MM+ pitcher if he stays on course through the 2009 season.
- Pat Burrell cleared waivers, but the Phillies have no intention of trading him given the way he's been hitting. Burrell has an absurd .392/.519/.725 line since July 1. No one has been better in OBP over that time period, and only Hanley Ramirez has a better SLG. Anyway, I've updated the list of players who have cleared waivers.
What would it take to get Bedard? I know the Orioles would want quality pitching in return, but what else are they in need of?

You forgot to mention today's blockbuster: Chad Moeller to the Dodgers, cash to the Reds.
The Reds made out like bandits on that one.

There is no way the Orioles can afford to trade Bedard unless they are getting multiple top prospects back in the deal. The O's can't expect to be successful if they trade away any players that get good. I understand the point of selling high, but Bedard seems to be able to maintain this, and is becoming a true ace. You don't give that up. They need to sign him longterm.

There's almost no benefit to trading away a guy like Bedard. You just can't get better, when considering salary, talent, age, etc. Unless someone blows your socks off until the point its obvious.

Maybe like a Homer Bailey + Joey Votto, something ridiculous like that? Haven't seen too many trades of that nature.

Knowing Baltimore management though, you can expect them to trade Bedard so that they can sign Corey Patterson to a 7 year deal

Problem is he is primed to leave as a FA after 08 so thinking about trading him is the logical path...
Honestly, they probably should have done more to see if he would resign with them earlier and if they really felt like he wouldnt then try to ship him to Atlanta before the Tex trade. A package of Salty/Pitcher(Devine prob)/Pros would have been a nice haul for a team thinking they are losing the guy anyway.
At this point, who knows what they will pull in ~ but it will be extreme if they do it.

What is the latest on David Wells? Was he DFA'd, released to FA, or did he retire. I read in the Arizona Republic that the Diamondbacks do not have interest. But, what teams are known to have interest? Could the Red Sox possibly try to bring him back, if Jon Lester continues to struggle. I doubt it, but it could be worth consideration if Wells would be willing to leave the west coast.

Wells has sucked this year in an extreme pitcher's park. I don't think he'll be finding work this year.

I would agree TMar except we probably shouldnt count out the Dodgers becayuse of their pitching woes... Another pitchers park and sadly he is better then a guy with his arm hanging out of the socket ~ well atleast he should be.

I just thought I'd randomly drop this link on you all...

It really reminds us how much can change over a year and a half. How loved Abreu was, how Dye wasn't going to repeat his 2005 season, the idea of using Hamels as a throw in, the value and anticipation of Brian Anderson. Many of the comments left were right and then wrong and then right again...

"Personally, I think the Josh Beckett trade is decent for the Red Sox. Beckett will probably never be a workhorse, but maybe a change of scenery will help. He should bring the team a couple of extra wins over David Wells in 2006. Anibal Sanchez will be very good in a few years, but Hanley Ramirez didn't exactly master Double A in 2005. I'm skeptical that he'll even become an average shortstop in the Majors."

Thanks for that.

The thought of Bedard wearing a Braves uniform makes me sick.

The thought of him signing an extension with the Orioles makes me sick. Not as a threat to the Red Sox thing, but as a, god I feel sorry that he's stuck on the Orioles thing.
