« Does Johan Santana Want Out? | Main | Do Yanks Have Room For Damon And Giambi? »
Athletics DH Mike Piazza has about $2.83MM left on his contract this year. Some teams poked around before the deadline - the Twins, maybe the Angels - but there wasn't much action on him and he didn't go anywhere. The question now is whether the A's will put him on waivers to try to trade him this month. There's no harm in just putting him on waivers, for starters. The Braves placed Andruw Jones on waivers last year.
Now if the A's do place Piazza on waivers, teams with the worst records in the AL get priority. So basically the Twins get first dibs if they want him, followed by Seattle. I have a hard time seeing the Angels get the claim, because that would mean the Mariners, Yankees, and Indians passed. I imagine at least one of those clubs would put in a claim and get him if the Twins passed.
Now once a team is awarded the claim, Billy Beane has three options. One, he can work out a trade with the winning team, where all players involved on the 40-man roster must also go through waivers. Two, he can just dump Piazza's salary on that team. Three, he can pull Piazza back and not trade him. Offering Piazza arbitration this winter is kind of risky, because he might just accept it and the A's would be stuck with him. He's not looking at a two-year deal this winter anyway. So a trade to a team that could actually use him - the Twins - makes all kinds of sense. I don't understand why competing teams would allow him to get all the way to the Angels though. Their chance has passed.

If the Yankees ate a good chunk of the contract. I wouldn't mind the Cubs getting in on Damon.

Teetz,
I think you are right. They would have to eat at least half of it, but that would be awesome.
1 - Soriano
2 - Damon
3 - Lee
4 - Ramirez
5 - Floyd
Thats Nasty right there...
Or you could keep the Riot in the 2 hold and bat Damon 5th or 6th....either way, its a win win. Never thought I would want to mess with this team that much, but Damon over Jaque is a definite upgrade. You could even play jaque in right again sometimes...

I think such a deal might get done, espically if Damon continues to want out verbally, and looking at what Melky Cabrera is doing , it's hard for any reasonable team to sit him. while the other underperfoming OF (Abreu) is again hot...
espically with the trade for Wilson Betemit, Damon now doesn't even look like he's giong to have a shot at 1st (Andy Phillips 's magic hitting is about to come to a close if he doesn't start showing some pop and walk that he had in the minors) . Power wise Betemit owns Damon , and they have Shelley Duncan who might make a great right handed PH.
Still though, if your going to ask the Yankees to eat over 10 M, you'd have to at least give some sort of mid range prospect back.

piazza to the twins would be great. they need a big bat and piazza would be able to dh full time.

Would the Yanks take Jacque Jones? We would have zero need for him if we got Damon. Cubs don't seem like they can add much payroll mid season so they might have to give up a decent prospect in order to get the Yanks to eat some of that contract.

Or Sosa to the Twins...They could be probably get Sosa for less than they would Piazza and Sammy has better power numbers with 70RBI.

I would gladly throw them a decent prospect and Jaque...that seems to make a lot of sense.
Jaque is playing decently right now....but I still think its a big upgrade.

Hehehe, Sosa and his .239/.301/.452 in a Launching-Pad of a stadium would be a nice fit for a team looking for a bat for DH?
Sorry, but I like Mike’s .305/.346/.424 line MUCH better if I was Minn…
Sosa should just retire now and save even more embarrassment ~ the guy cant even hit his “steroid years*” weight anymore…
*(its only alleged, I know ~ so I will throw this in for you apologists)

I like Mike's averages better too, but other than Mike putting those creaky knees on first base with singles there's no difference between the two. Either way the Twins have a slim chance at making the playoffs and they could use either one of those guys down the stretch.
And while you're throwing around steriod allegations, Mike hasn't been elite since the semi-crackdown on roids began either. Along with Sammy, Gagne, Prior, Wood, Alou, Bagwell, Pudge Rodriguez.....we could go on forever.

JoeM,
Wasnt trying to throw allegations around to anyone new, it’s not like anyone believes he was clean so it was just a comment on his old weight vs his new weight...
Mike vs Sosa?
Mike 46 H, 9 2B, 3 HR, 10 BB, 31 SO ~ in 151 AB
Sosa ~ 79 H, 20 2B, 16 HR, 28 BB, 94 SO ~ in 330 AB
Mike at 330 ABs though?
Mike 101 H, 20 2B, 7 HR, 22 BB, 68 SO
Sosa 79 H, 20 2B, 16 HR, 28 BB, 94 SO
I still would rather have the 20+ more times OB and fewer Ks, even if I did sacrifice a bit of HR power…
