Some random rumor tidbits for the weekend...
- Buster Olney checked with some execs on the trade value of Eric Chavez. Given the player's declining health, indications are that the A's would have to eat some money and would not receive any top prospects in return. Might be better just to hang onto him for 2008 and hope he can rebuild some value.
- The Cardinals acquired Russell Branyan. Branyan's been well-traveled this year. It looks like Scott Rolen may miss the rest of the season, so Branyan will add some depth there. Brendan Ryan is still the starter at present though.
- Apparently a Ryan Klesko to Detroit rumor surfaced yesterday, but it didn't happen. The Giants did a nice job moving Matt Morris but are stuck with many, many overpaid aging veterans. I fear this team might try to win and rebuild in '08, and that rarely works.
- Randy Wolf signed a below-market deal guaranteeing him $8MM in '07 with a $9MM club option for '08. Now that he's having shoulder surgery, that option will be declined. At the minimum Wolf could've snagged three years, $24MM last winter. Let this be a lesson to Matt Clement, Freddy Garcia, Jason Jennings, and Rodrigo Lopez - get the best deal you can. Though to be fair, Wolf's discount was more of the hometown variety than injury-related.
- Bucco Blog is endorsing Tony LaCava for the next Pirates CEO/President. Support is building for this guy. Too bad it's not an election.

Why was there never a discussion for the Braves to get Towers? I think we could have given them Prado and Wic to get him. We stink at starting!

Randy Wolf has got to realize business is business. He should have taken the better deal. I'm sure that by this time next year, we'll be talking about Esteban Loaiza in the same way. As much as Ned Colletti has messed up this season, you can't deny that him taking a chance on Wolf wasn't a bad idea, and he did get a few quality starts out of him. That seems to be the philosophy of Colletti's, short term, big money deals(except for Juan Pierre). As painful as the Jason Schmidt, Nomar Garciaparra, Luis Gonzalez, Randy Wolf, Olmedo Saenz, and Rafael Furcal contracts seem...they are all short term deals.
Taking a chance on Esteban Loaiza, the way they did on Wolf isn't that bad of an idea, because it is short term.
Hopefully, Ned Colleti will realize a power bat(or two!) is needed in Los Angeles, and he probably will have to guarentee years and lots of money.

And some kid in a different post ("What's In Store For Oakland" post) was hoping to get BOTH Jon Lester and Craig Hansen, the A's would be lucky to get Craig Hansen

I'm wishin now that we did that trade that involved Andruw to the RedSox for Coco, Hansen, and Lester.

Chipper, was that deal ever proposed? wow if it was we screwed up on that one.

The Redsox deal was, and if memory serves, the Braves pulled him back when the RedSox we're ready and willing.
"Sometimes, the best trades, are the one's not made". That's true for the BoSox

I actually don't want to give up Josh Towers next year. We need a 5th and he's perfectly good. In the NL he'd probably pitch about 190 innings with a 4.50-4.75-ish ERA. And the pitching market sucks.
If JP is fired I'd like to see Tony Lacava take over for the Jays. Or the Pirates since they could use someone else.

Chipper, you actually completely wrong. The Redsox were prepared to give up Hansen and Crisp in the deal, and would have given up a third young player, and the Braves were asking for a pitcher, but when the Braves consistiently insisted that pitcher be Jon Lester, the Red Sox backed off on the deal. Those are the deatails of those negotions, let us makes sure that we have the specifics at least half right next time.

Man that was over half right! I remember the whole conversation with the ESPN news analysts!

The Jays have had one of the most formidable rotations in the league since the all-star break. And the emmergence of Jesse Lisch has all but guaranteed the disposal of Josh Towers and even if Lisch was a fluke, Gustavo Chacin will be back next year and there are several up and coming pitchers such as Banks, Purcy and maybe Taubenhiem that could pitch equally if not better than towers. The jays should have dumped him off to the braves or Rockies or anybody who would have taken him.
