Marlins High On Floyd's List
We were a little late to the party a few days ago, linking to a September 30th article indicating that Cliff Floyd would like to end his career back in Florida. As we mentioned at the time, Shannon Stewart seems to make more sense for the Fish.
Regardless, Floyd has now gone public with his desire to play for the Marlins. He said he'd love to "come, chill out, and help Fredi win some ballgames." Joe Capozzi notes that Floyd's agents will reach out to every team this winter, and he's hunting for a salary similar to the $3MM he earned in 2007. It sounds like he'd prefer to jump to the AL if the Marlins or Cubs won't have him.

Maybe the Cub fans would chime in on this but I don't really think Floyd has anything in the tank anymore.
Marlins probably are better served to play their own guys rather than one year deals with veterans past their prime. 3 million is pocket change for Yanks or Sox, but this is a team with a 30 million payroll, 3 million for Floyd doesn't really make sense.

He's good for about 300 at bats, decent OBP, little power and absolutely no help off the bench. His pinch hitting numbers are bad and he has even stated how much he dislikes pinch hitting.

Where would they even play him?
With Willingham and Hermida at the corners, putting Floyd out there would be a downgrade. Even if they move Willingham to 1B, I'd still prefer to give someone like Cody Ross or Todd Linden a shot at LF before Floyd.

Would he have enough left in the tank to platoon at DH?
The Twins are expected to have a hole at DH and there aren't a lot good options out there. Depending on what other moves the team makes, I could be satisfied if Floyd came in for 3M and hit .800 OPS against RHP. He did hit .792 OPS this year against RHP, so I don't think it's a stretch.

Cliff needs to just walk away... if he does come back, he should definitely stay away from the NL, offers absolutely nothing in the field anymore.

Sorry. Floyd can't play more than a couple days in a row without getting hurt. He did virtually nothing until the last two weeks of the season. Most of the time, his bat looked old and slow and he just can't play in the field anymore. I also don't think the Cubs need a guy who wants to just "chill out". Nice guy, Great teammate, but no longer a National league player. Hope he enjoyed his year back in his hometown. Time to move on.

I would think the Twins, after the Rondell White experiment, would pass on Floyd...
Same type of guy, good bat in the prime years but they are old now and always hurt.

I agree that Floyd is a question mark. But everyone in FA <5M at DH has the same question marks. If he can platoon at DH, playing 100-110 games with an .800 OPS it will be money well spent.
I don't think it's wise to eliminate an entire pool of players because RonDL failed. Although it's a consideration. Some work out and some don't.
The Twins have no in house options at DH (assume Kubel is in LF). I will cry if Jason Tyner or Garret Jones are the Twins DH next season.
This doesn't take into account the uncertainty of Santana/Nathan being traded and possibly landing a DH that way. And let's not discuss that in this thread.

I love the crusty veteran announcing that the obviously non-competing team should just waste its time and money and give him a contract because he wants one.
I know most Mets fans love Cliff, but his sense of entitlement might have cost the Mets the pennant in '06. Milledge, not Floyd, should have been on the roster.
