| Cubs, Mariners Interested In Hiroki Kuroda »
By Tim Dierkes [October 15, 2007 at 5:00am CST]
Early Monday morning reading material...
- Interesting article in the New York Daily News regarding Scott Boras and Alex Rodriguez. Boras insists that many of his clients have not taken the largest deal offered to them, giving examples. The article also touches upon recent Boras clients connected to performance-enhancing drugs (Rick Ankiel and Scott Schoeneweis). Boras' agency is known for its obsessive attention to detail for all of its clients, and seeing a few of them busted raises some questions.
- Last winter, we discussed the possibility of Hiroki Kuroda coming over from Japan. Well, he's a free agent again, and Nick Cafardo is wondering if 2008 will be the year. Cafardo also noted that Daisuke Matsuzaka did not earn the Red Sox nearly as much marketing revenue as Scott Boras suggested.
- Newsday's Ken Davidoff says Andy Pettitte intends to exercise his $16MM player option for 2008. Davidoff points out that Pettitte has the same deadline for this decision as A-Rod has for his opt-out. Davidoff also mentions that Roger Clemens' most likely destination for 2008 appears to be back in Houston, if he plays.
- You've probably heard by now that Hank and Hal Steinbrenner will have final say on baseball decisions (especially Hank). Hank will insist Joba Chamberlain be used as a starter in '08, heightening the need to re-sign Mariano Rivera.
- The Hardball Times tries to place dollar values on some top free agents, plus Adam Dunn.

Listed below are links to weblogs that reference Odds and Ends: A-Rod, Boras, Pettitte:
Correction: Ankiel apparently took a (then) non-banned substance under a legitimate prescription for legitimate medical purposes. Bit of a difference between that and Barry Bonds.

If it's legitimate, why did he not inform his team's medical staff? The prescription was given by a doctor who is pretty shady himself(a lot of malpractice claims, bad reputation) and he got it from this shady lab that is now investigated for distributing PEDs.
Maybe I'm jaded but I don't buy the "for legitimate purpose" reasoning.

yeah, it depends on your definition of "legitimate". He took it to get over an injury faster, I think it was TJ surgery, right? I'm not so sure its the "norm" to take HGH when having TJ surgery. Obviously its not now, but I don't really think it ever was...

I didn't know Canseco accused Pudge, but I had a feeling he was juicing. That dramatic weight loss and power spike back in the day was a telling sign. But his numbers have always been pretty good.

Hmmm...not sure that gets Ankiel off the hook.

Hey Roger, you can stay in NY. We do not want you.

Blabberin Braves Forum is having a mock off season. You get to claim a team, and be the GM of it. You make every decision from Contract Extensions, Free Agency, and Trades. We need more members to get it going though. I am the commissioner, but do a better job than Bud Selig (LOL). It should be a fun experience, and hope you join and enjoy.

That sounds cool...feel free to post a link here in the comments where people can get to it.

OK, man, I thought you were fixing to yell at me. If you want the Cubs, I can rearrange some things.

Great article on Boras. That guy is a snake and GM's should very weary about anything he sells. Signing Rodriguez until he is 45 without club options to terminate the contract is lunacy.

ZS, doctors all over have "malpractice claims and bad reputations". A lot of times it's based purely off of how the doctor speaks to the patient (not that he's condescending or anything, it's just the patient's perception).
I'm not defending Ankiel, jus' sayin'.

This is a bit old, but there is a couple paragraphs the doctor (William Gogan) here.

I know it doesn't speak to his expertise on prescribing HGH for TJ surgery but I'm pretty suspicious.

I don't think it was ever common practice anywhere to prescribe HGH for Tommy John surgery. Do you really believe he thought he could tell the world he was on it and no one would care? There is a reason that they tried to keep it under wraps dude...

no one gets off the hook...steroids are steroids, especially not for reconstructive elbow story, doesn't that heal without HGH? Didn't he go on a slump after the news came out...guilty?
Posted by: ranholland | October 15, 2007 at 08:27 PM
Everything heals without steroids. It's just that most everything also heals faster (and sometimes better) with steroids. HGH can lead to increased collagen synthesis, which can aid in TJ recuperation.
As far as the pharmacy he got it from being "shady" - it's right down the street from his home. C'mon. Think there might be a reason he used that particular pharmacy?
It looks to me like we have a case of a guy who used a non-banned substance to rush back from TJ surgery. I don't really qualify that as "performance enhancing" in the Bonds/McGwire/Sosa/Clemens sense, but you may feel differently.
