« Dodgers Serious About Andruw Jones | Main | Astros Interested In Hunter, Rowand »

Options Declined: Lieberthal, Riske, Perez, Erstad, Myers

Many options were declined tonight, though none were unexpected.

  • The Dodgers passed on Mike Lieberthal for $1.5MM.  He only got 77 ABs this year and wasn't worth it.
  • David Riske had a $2.9MM player option.  He declined it given his stellar 2.45 ERA in 69.2 innings this year.  He'll get a nice Bob Howry/Jamie Walker type of deal for three years.
  • The Royals took a $1.5MM buyout rather than pay Odalis Perez $9MM.  It was a nice gamble at the time but they don't need him for '08 at effectively $7.5MM.  His season ended with a knee injury in late August.
  • Darin Erstad got a lot of love in the Chicago press but he wasn't worth $3.5MM to the White Sox.  He gets a $250K consolation prize.
  • Mike Myers for $1.1MM - nope.  The Sox tried him and he was terrible.

Good riddance boys

Tim,is there a reason that the Royals aren't going to pick up their half of the mutual option? It's only 2.85 mil. Or am I missing something?

I hope the decline Uribe as well.

As a Whitesox fan all I can say is, so far so good (offseason).

Riske's a very effective reliever. I think he'll get a nice deal as a FA.

Riske's option became a player option with 60 games pitched.

Ok thanks! I didn't realize that.

You'd think the Royals would have used him a bit less frequently in September in order to save a few million bucks. It was only 5 games.

Some NL team needs to make a move on Odalis.

Put a few mil on him and giv him a chance to earn a longer term deal somewhere in MLB.

A cheap high upside guy like this could fit a ton of teams. I wouldnt mind seeing my Mets take a shot.

Perez seems like a Nationals fit.

Yes! Two good moves so far by the White Sox. Erstad cant play more than 80 games and Meyers cant get left handers out. Next move HAS to be declining Juan Uribe, UNLESS they go out and get a bonified Lead-off or CF. I can deal with a .230 hitting 20 HR SS if we dont have 3 other guys hitting below .240 as well. Not many teams put a .300 hitting #9 hitter out on the field, so if the sox can shore up some other positioins, say CF and 2B, im OK with bringing Uribe back for what is it, 5 Mil?

I'm with ya 100% trober. And yes, Uribe's option is $5M.

I would almost say i hope that my braves would try a nice buy low move on odalis, but my thinking is that we really would not have a place for him with the pitchers that we have. Not saying that some of them of better options, but in time, they could be.
