Pettitte: Yankees Or Retirement

Andy Pettitte has made an honorable decision - if he pitches in 2008, it will be for the Yankees.  He respects the fact that they awarded him a $16MM player option.  Sure, he could decline it and get a bigger multiyear package elsewhere.  Many speculated he'd do so.  However the extra money isn't a concern for him.

My best guess is that he'll exercise the option.  That would be odd, though, a player exercising a player option when it actually represents his true worth.

why is he so hell bent on leaving baseball? what the hell is wrong with him? He is young and very talented, he held down the entire yankee team pitching wise in April and May until Wang kicked it into gear. Why does he want to leave baseball so badly, somebody please tell me

None of us know, you'd have to ask Andy.

Maybe he likes things like Family and Kids....there are people who enjoy those things...

He has been experiencing elbow troubles the last few years and that's why he signed a 1 year with an option year when he probably could have gotten a multiyear deal last season. He wasn't sure if he could continue to pitch.

It's hard not to like a guy like Pettite. He seems to be very fair and practical.

Also, why keep going if his passion isn't there? The guy has made enough cash to last him and his family for a very long time.

I remember Andy as the young pitcher on our staff who burst out as our ace in Cone's absence to an aneurysm. He is a class act and I'd really love for him to be back. But yeah, with elbow issues(though he was our only opening day pitcher didn't miss a start this season) and the possibility to retire and be with your family at the age of 35 isn't too bad.

The guy is 35 and going by most pitching standards these days, he's got 5-6+ more years in him, especially since he's not a fireballer. He'd do well to hang with the Yanks for a few more years.
