Chicago radio (Bruuuuce Levine is reporting the Sox signed Linebrink for 4 yrs/19 million. WSCR is also reporting it.
Posted by: Tweezer | November 22, 2007 at 12:44 AM
We are discussing that here:
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2007/11/brewers-inquire.html
I am still unconvinced. Did you hear either report personally?
Posted by: Tim Dierkes | November 22, 2007 at 12:47 AM
I honestly did not... and I was listening to AM1000 but only for about 15 minutes. I haven't turned on the radio all night. It's all over SoxTalk and WhiteSoxInteractive though... where multiple posters have claimed to hear it. I'm not 100% convinced either, even if he is reporting it.

Here's a bigger breaking news story from out of nowhere:
Angels sign Torii Hunter.
Details to come...
Posted by: CJax33 | November 22, 2007 at 01:04 AM
Damn....
Angels came out of nowhere...
5 year deal....no dollars yet...
Posted by: zito4cyyoung | November 22, 2007 at 01:17 AM
It's for five years, about $80 million, pending a physical.
Guess this moves Matthews to LF, Anderson to DH (poor Scioscia, loses some of his lineup tinkering ability) and generally throws the market into complete disarray for all the teams (Rangers, Braves, Nationals, White Sox, Dodgers, etc.) seeking a center fielder.
This offseason is gonna be fun.

Good thing Aaron Gleeman "called out" Torii Hunter for going back on his word or whatever. Wasn't there a 6 year offer too?
Posted by: Merloni's Salami | November 22, 2007 at 01:29 AM
Matthews LF
Hunter CF
Vlad RF
That is a sick OF..

I'm an Angels fan and I'm now assuming this stacks their outfield and pitching with the Garland trade to make a trade for Miguel Cabrera. Probably including a package with Willits or Rivera, possibly Santana or Saunders, and one of the cathcers.

Angels looking to match Yankee payroll??
White Sox must be PISSED!!
lol
Posted by: zito4cyyoung | November 22, 2007 at 01:35 AM
My guess for a Marlins-Angels trade would be Willits, Santana and Wood for Cabrera. Then maybe they throw in a minor league pitcher or a catcher, but I think the Angels would rather keep both catchers and Kendrick, too.
Posted by: CJax33 | November 22, 2007 at 01:58 AM
As an Angels fan I am sick to my stomach if this is true.
The one thing we DID NOT need was another outfielder. We have plenty already. We need to keep the DH spot open for when Vlad needs to take a break. This blocks Morales or forces a Morales/Kotchman platoon.
Only way this makes sense is if the Angels are definitely trading with the Marlins and have put together a package of Willits/Morales/(Sauders and/or Santana)/ and Wood.
If the Angels don't get Cabrera they have about 2 extra starting outfielders to go along with 2 extra starting pitchers.

According to the AP, Matthews will be a DH and backup outfielder. Ouch. That was money poorly spent, just like everyone said it would be. No wonder Stoneman "stepped down" at season's end.
Also, this might mean they turn away from Miguel Cabrera, and toward getting Torii's buddy, Johan Santana, from the Twins for a massive Wood-Morales-Willits-Ervin-Adenhart package.
Posted by: CJax33 | November 22, 2007 at 02:05 AM
On a positive note - if they do land Cabrera with the package listed above they will have a line-up of:
Figgins (SS)
Kendrick (2B)
Vlad (RF)
Cabrera (3B)
Hunter (CF)
Kotchman (1B)
Anderson (DH)
Matthews (LF)
Napoli (C)
and a rotation of:
J. Lackey
K. Escobar
J. Weaver
J. Garland
J. Saunders/E. Santana
This would definitely be a win it now team. They would be unbelievable next year and possibly the year after. Beyond that Matthews and Hunter will be awful is my guess.
Posted by: bjsguess | November 22, 2007 at 02:08 AM
That lineup would be sick, but it's not happening. We all know who the Marlins want for Cabrera, so a couple of those players will be gone to get him.
So now the Angels have 6 outfielders? Vlad, Matthews Jr, Hunter, Anderson, Rivera, Willits(assuming Figgins is playing infield only, or else it will be 7). Either this new GM Reagins thinks he's playing MLB2k7, or he has a huge trade up his sleeve.
I think Reagins is trying to come in with a BANG, making radical acquisitions since everyone criticized Stoneman for not doing anything. At this point, he should just go ALL IN and give up Kendrick/Adenhart/Napoli/Santana/Saunders, or whoever the Marlins wanted for Cabrera.
Posted by: Chillin | November 22, 2007 at 02:36 AM
Marlins need a 3B, CF, and they always love pitching: Willits/Wood/Weaver, Yes, I would trade Weaver, he'll be nothing but a #3 in his career if he stays in the AL and with Garland/Saunders/Moseley/Adenhart/Santana, that deal gets it done. You wouldn't be worried about Wood going because Miguel would be there. Mathews Jr. for 4 years and Hunter for 5, not worried about a CF. Willits doesn't do anything in the OF Figgins can't do (at least offensively).
I hope Chillin wasn't implying all five of those guys for Cabrera...
As an A's fan, this just pisses me off. AL West? Game, set, match = Angels.
Posted by: Droptop | November 22, 2007 at 02:49 AM
there's now way u have matthews on ur team and put him in the OF. his glove is too good.
anaheim plays in a huge park. it would be a big advantage to have someone with matthews' range in LF or RF too.
obviously this only makes sense if they have a deal in the pipeline for an elite player.
my money is on the angle getting m-cab and the dodgers getting carl crawford.
Posted by: bsox21 | November 22, 2007 at 02:50 AM
The deal would need to be Cabrera for:
Morales (1st base upgrade)
Willits (OF upgrade)
Wood (Future SS/3B)
Saunders/Santana (Starting pitching)
Mathis (Starting catcher)
That's 4 starters in 08 with Wood ready to join the club later in the year. 5 major league starters with a couple of them being very good prospects for Miggy.
We keep Adenhart and Kendrick. They fill holes with cheap, controllable players.
Posted by: bjsguess | November 22, 2007 at 03:19 AM
I also agree with bsox21 - no way Matthews is DH'ing as long as GA is in the outfield. Matthews is a very nice defender and would be an upgrade in left or right field.
Posted by: bjsguess | November 22, 2007 at 03:20 AM
i wouldnt say the Angels lead in getting Cabrera, not if the Dodgers give up what ive seen.. Kershaw, Kemp, LaRoche.
if the Angels want to get him they better include someone better than Santana. whats he done recently to show he has any trade value?
are the Angels worried about Matthews JR missing any time because of his steroids thing? they just signed him as a good defensive CF last year why would they want another? even before signing Hunter they had too many OF, what are they going to do with Rivera? .310/23/85 in 06 (broken leg in 07) and hes forgotten about?
Posted by: SpecialFNK | November 22, 2007 at 05:24 AM
not steroids, but HGH :|

Red Sox fan here
Theo is biting at the lip to see what comes next. Hunter, possibly the biggest FA centerfielder (after Andruw Jones down year), went to a surprise team. He's got Coco Crisp who is young, good defender, and a cheap 3 years left on his contract
Teams looking for a change in center field are Baltimore, Minnesota, Chicago, Texas, Washington, Atlanta, Florida, and San Diego
Andruw Jones, Aaron Rowand, and Mike Cameron... where do they go?

Outfielder Torii Hunter and the Los Angeles Angels reached a preliminary agreement Wednesday night on a five-year contract thought to be worth $90 million.

per espn.
Wow.
Posted by: ArodSucksAtLife | November 22, 2007 at 08:00 AM
Good job by the Angels signing Hunter, I didn't expect them to. Now with Hunter and Vlad and a good pitching staff the Angels are going to be an even harder team to beat. Also I got to disagree with the Garland for Cabrera deal in favor of White Sox. Look so Garland is 28 around his prime has gone 2 years in a row with 18 wins. People also forget that his ERA went down from last year and the reason he lost 13 games was because the White Sox couldn't hit most of the season. Just because the guy sucked for one year doesn't mean he is done.
Posted by: yankfan1 | November 22, 2007 at 08:30 AM
Wins are a stupid statistic for pitchers.
Posted by: ArodSucksAtLife | November 22, 2007 at 08:48 AM
The Hunter signing doesnt make Gleeman wrong. I imagine if the Nationals came in with that offer instead he would've jumped on it too.
Posted by: Tim Dierkes | November 22, 2007 at 11:11 AM
Im deff watching where the CF's go as a boston fan , I'd like to see us either get a young backup catcher ( laird i wouldnt mind ) or a solid bullpen arm , even if that means we have to include a mid leval prospect ( below the sox top 10 or so guys) but other than those 2 ideas I deff dont want to see the sox get just a prospect back for him
