Nats Trying To Acquire Dukes?

Rays Index dug up a story on a Dominican news site.  Apparently the Nationals are trying to acquire Elijah Dukes with the intent of making him their center fielder.  Manny Acta went to the Dominican Republic to watch Dukes play recently.  The Rays, of course, are asking for pitching in return.  The Nats don't want to give up Collin Balester, Colton Willems, Zech Zinicola, or Glenn Gibson in the deal.

If you speak Spanish check out the article here and let us know any interesting info in the comments that we weren't able to glean from Google Translator.

Oh Jim Bowden... what a character...

There's got to be a few relievers on the Nats that would interest the Rays. Could be a very beneficial deal for all involved.

Would the Nats outfield next year look like Kearns, Dukes and Pena then? Because that would be essentially all guys with crazy potential that they most likely wont ever live up to. If they made this move i would expect them to hold onto Ryan Church. Its never a good idea to depend on Elijah Dukes as your starting CF

The All-WillNeverReachPotential Squad... I like it.

My Spanish is a little rusty, but the article quotes Dukes indirectly, by saying he's told some friends that he needs to leave Tampa in order to get his career back in order. (that's a no-brainer).

And yeah, Ryan Church would probably be retained and would at least still play part time even if the Nats got Dukes.

Speaking Spanish (b/c I am Hispanic), there are other important things here:

*WAS's 3B coach is the 3B coach for the Licey Tigers in the DR
*TB wants to get rid of him

I imagine tampa will take just about any type of fresh arm for him. I agree with trying to find a reliver, not named rauch or cordero, for dukes swap.

how about dukes and davis for rauch?

bowden should laugh like a little school girl if he makes this deal--he would be getting two great prospects for an overused bullpen piece

Just Rauch for Dukes would be fair. I'm not even sure that Rauch is the Nationals 2nd best reliever.

Hey tim you may not have noticed this report: "7Sports has learned that Mike Lowell has received contract offers from four separate MLB teams: the Braves, Angels, Cardinals, and Yankees.

A source close to the Lowell side of the negotiations tells 7Sports that each offer is a 4-year contract, worth between $55-60 million."

Thanks Kramerica, that is very interesting. I dont understand why the Braves are interested. I am truly baffled there. The Cardinals making an offer is also interesting, i guess they are serious about trading Rolen.

Whoknows maybe Chipper is moving back to left field?

no problem. I have to think something is missing here. Why would the Braves be interested?

I disagree, while it may be fair in terms of talent, I think the nationals could give up a lesser talented reliever because of dukes troubles

Yes, that makes no sense on the braves part. Absolutely makes no sense since we are trying to free up as much money as we can to sign teixeria, would not signt andruw for 15 million per, and already have chipper entrhalled at third base.
Only conceivable option is that we sign lowell, move chipper to left, and then when Teix leaves, move him chipper to first. But i do not think the braves would ever make this type of offer to a man who will be in his mid 30's during the length of the contract.

Of course Bowden would laugh like a schoolgirl if he pulled off that trade. Davis would be as good or better than Rauch in a MLB bullpen right now, not to mention the potential he has as a #2-3 starter in a couple of years. There is no way Friedman should do that deal. If he wants to get one of the better relievers, he should include MLB-ready starters, which would be one of Sonnanstine, Hammel, or Howell, plus maybe a mid-level prospect. James Houser?

from this part of "el articulo"...

Una fuente cercana a las conversaciones entre Nacionales y Rays...

This sounds like Dukes is the main source, or his agent.

Both Washington and Tampa Bay clubs are notorious as really bad traders, demanding exorbitant bids in return for trades. The Nats had the rest of 29 clubs shaking their heads when they wouldn't move Soriano last year, the Nats stated stuff about wanting free agent Soriano'sdraft picks, signing Soriano etc, which is bullsh__t. They could had gotten at least a good caliber player in a July 31st trade.

The Rays think that other clubs should be honored that other clubs are returning their phone calls, and give away their top players..

The Nats have the upper hand in this trade, they should offer a player or two to be named later, or a a draft pick, and tell the Rays they are doing a service in taking Dukes off their hands. They shouldn't be offering any pitching. Given how the Nats played at the end of the season, they do have some potential, and if Wily Mo Peña can live up to his potential, they could be a pretty good club next year.

"The Rays think that other clubs should be honored that other clubs are returning their phone calls, and give away their top players.."

...huh?...

you're basing this on what? I think if you examine the Rays record of the Rays current management, you will see that they have been quite willing to trade. You can look at the Huff, Lugo, Hall and Baez deals of 2006, or the Wigginton for Wheeler trade this past year.
I don't think any prize prospects came back to the Rays in those deals, nor do I recall them holding out for any substantial bounty.

Dukes does have some value, and it would be nuts to go and dump him at the first opportunity. They would have just released him if that is all they were going to do anyway.

That said, I agree that Dukes probably does not make a good fit in a Nats outfield that already has Pena and Kearns.
