Given it's a long shot but did the Boston Herald article really rule out an A-Rod + Lowell tandem? All it said was that Mike is their top target for 3B. Bringing in Alex as their SS is still an outside possibility that wasn't ruled out.

"The idea that the Sox would somehow be able to sign both Lowell and Rodriguez (to play shortstop) is not being entertained."

If Kuroda doesn't like cold weather (Chicago) and he's considering the Rangers, I wonder if he's thought about Texas in August. Sounds like a possible overcorrection.

That said, a 2 year contract signing makes sense for Texas. The Rangers need arms - only Milwood threw over 140 innings for the team in 2007. Wow.

Tim, my FA list...

Alex Rodriguez - Angels - 9

Torii Hunter - Texas - 15

Barry Bonds - Minnesota - 2

Aaron Rowand - CHW - 10

Carlos Silva - NYM - 13

Kyle Lohse - Stl - 4

Andruw Jones - Wsh - 7

Kosuke Fukudome - CHC - 3

Francisco Cordero - Mil - 5

Jose Guillen - KC - 12

Hiroki Kuroda - Bos - 11

Johan Santana - Min - 8

Miguel Cabrera - LAD - 6

Miguel Tejada - SD - 1

Coco Crisp - SD - 14

if would could get glavine at 8-9 mil, i'd be all over it

even without any other moves we could have a solid rotation of

smoltz
hudson
glavine
chuck james
hampton/jurrjens/jo jo reyes

intersting that the braves are looking at a japanese pitcher to potentially close when soriano thrived in the role last year, and gonzalez should be ready by june

anybody else see the braves dangling a package chuck james/joey devine/and one of lillbridge/hernandez/schafer in order to go after another #3 type (maybe a joe blanton)

i still think the roatation is missing a true #3, and chuck james really seems like the odd man out in the above list with his inability to go past 6 innings

maybe jurrjens develops into that guy, but it seems like the braves really want to go after it in '08 and asking a 21 year old to deliver like that seems a bit much

A package that included James, Devine and Hernanadez should be more than enough to get us a guy like Blanton.

well, i was looking at it from the perspective that solid, relatively cheap pitching is at a serious premium right now, and we'd no doubt have to give up some talent

that said, losing james and devine would be largely irrelevant to our staff not only next year, but in the future in my eyes(james just does not give you innings or consistency, though he does shows flashes of being great, and there isn't any real room in the pen for devine)

and losing hernandez or lillbridge wouldn't really hurt either, especially with the surplus of outfield prospects we now have

i would definitely hesitate on schafer though... that guy is killing it right now

And that's the beauty of using that package. And if they wanted, you could add Brandon Jones to the mix as well. So if you add all that up, that's a lot of talent for just one pitcher. But there's a lot of teams linked to having interest Blanton, including those pesky Mets.

I mean the braves and oakland definitly do have what the other could use: oakland has joe blanton or dan haren who the braves would love to have, and the braves have major league ready players who the athletics could use. That being said, why not attempt to us lillibridge, brandon jones, and jair jurrjens/chuck james to get either of them. The braves do not give up the higher ceiling younger prospects in schafer, escobar, or hernandez, and we also could then use our money to sign a centerfielder plus glavine. With that being said, i think that if we give up three prospects for blanton, it may not be the best thing, it may be too much for him. And after the teix trade, just thinking of the braves giving up too much future talent for now and the near future makes me purty hesitant. But if the braves can use their outfield and middle infield depth to acquire a young effective pitcher, by all means lets see if we cannot get something done.

And also, why not start off and baldelli for chad cordero, the nats get their young centerfielder they want, the drays get a closer for the future, even though i really would like frank wren to inquire and see what it would take to get baldelli, crisp, dejesus, or even ryan spilborgs/willy tavares

I can really see Floyd in a Tigers uniform in '08 - a righty/lefty combo in LF of Thames/Floyd should be good enough for 40 HRs and a solid SLG%

Gonzo probably costs too much - I think they would have an easier time convincing the oft-injured Floyd to accept Platoon duties/salary.

Broussard and Stewart will not happen

I think that Braves package is way too much for Blanton. Haren yes. Not Blanton.
