Rosenthal's Latest: Nathan, Garza, Bedard

Ken Rosenthal recently dished out a slew of fresh rumors for us to devour.

  • Rosenthal still believes that if the Twins trade Johan Santana, they will also trade Joe Nathan in a separate deal.  Back on November 11th, Rosenthal first suggested this might happen.  About a week ago, Joe Christensen reported that the Twins exchanged contract proposals with Nathan.  Nathan is in line to earn at least $15MM per season, if he wants full market value.  Rosenthal suggests the Brewers, Indians, Tigers, Cubs, and Red Sox as possible fits for Nathan.
  • The Angels may want to keep Gary Matthews Jr., given Vladimir Guerrero's declining defensive abilities.  Also, Guerrero may soon get a contract extension in the $18MM per season range to put him in line with Torii Hunter.  His contract runs through 2009.
  • The Twins may be close to getting a center fielder, but it may not be Coco Crisp.  Another team is chasing Crisp - perhaps the White Sox?
  • Melky Cabrera could be dealt independent and regardless of a Johan Santana deal.  The Braves may be interested; the Yanks would then move Johnny Damon back to center.
  • Matt Garza or Boof Bonser may be moved for a bat.  Probably not Delmon Young, but some young slugger.  The Rays also want to find a young shortstop to compete with Reid Brignac.
  • The Yanks don't want to overpay for a free agent reliever - 3/12 seems their limit on the Riskes and Mahays of the world.
  • Back at the GM meetings, the Mets inquired on Erik Bedard.  The O's are waiting to see what happens with Miguel Cabrera since they covet many of the prospects being discussed there.

Wow, I just realized this...remember the Angels' excuse for not getting a big bat behind Vlad was that they wanted to keep Vlad as the highest paid player on the team and not upset him...and they blew that rule for Torii Hunter? Great business thinking there.

What are the Cubs going to do with Nathan? I mean, he is awesome, don't get me wrong...but how much money can you possibly spend on a bullpen?? With Eyre, Wood, Howry, and Nathan, thats a ton of money. I wouldn't consider them contenders...

While the Melky Cabrera rumor made me happy for a few seconds, I was left wondering why the braves would trade for him. They are looking for veterns and Melky would just block the younger players in the farm system.

What would Melky fetch back?

@AngelicDoctor:

They probably see Melky as a stopgap and future 4th OF. They just want him, his league average offense, and his arm for the next year and half probably.

Either that or both the Twins and the Braves see something in the numbers we don't.

I'm confused as to why the Braves would want Melky as well. Seems like there are similar options for CF that wouldn't come at such a high price, or block the younger 2-3 guys waiting in the minors. The Yanks would probably put too high a price on him anyway.

The reason that the braves want melky cabrera is because he is a defensive centerfielder, will hit for a decent average at teh bottom or top of the order, and is very cheap. Also, by the time that schafer or hernandez is ready to roam center, melky could easily be traded somewhere else for a young starter, or schafer or gorkys could be traded off if cabrera turns out to be a nice all-around centerfielder. With Melky, the braves have a very good defensive player in center and a young leadoff hitter, one that could develop into our CF of the future, could be the long term option in center, or could be traded off for more pitching. Melky is not going to block schafer or gorkys because he is cheap and still will be in a few years, so he can be moved. Any way you look at it, Melky gives the braves an option in center that will probably have a positive impact into the future.

With that being said, what will the braves have to give up to get melky. I could see us trading them joey devine as a young bullpen piece, and if the yanks want to talk about trading cano, i guess they could have interest in lillbridge to play second. Beyond that, i really do not see how the braves and yankees match up.

Lillibridge is overpaying, and Devine is under paying. The previous would likely give the Braves the same offense in Center with only a little defensive drop while the latter has only shown an ability to be consistent at lower levels. Either way you slice it those two won't be swapped one for one.

I mean that we could move melky to left as our long term option there. As mentioned above, the fact that melky will still be young and cheap in a few years means he can be moved for some young pitching, which will have a need for at that time since smoltz, hampton, and glavine will all likely be gone. In either melky, schafer, or gorkys hernandez, the braves have 3 legit chances to find a star long-term option in center and another in left, and still another to help them get a need in the future. I do not know which of those 3 will fit which need, but getting melky would be an awesome move. I do agree with FineHam, the one problem would be the yankees wanting too much for him.

remember, the braves have had interest in cabrera in the past as a left field/lead off option last year. It was a three team trade, adam laroche to hte pirates, mike gonzo to the yanks, and melky to us, so I can see why Rosenthal would think of the braves as a good fit.

Never said one for one, just said those are two options whom i could see the yankees being interested in. And no matter how you slice it, lillibridge is not overpaying for melky in the eyes of other teams, mainly the yankees. Melky has had some success at the major league level, whil lillibridge has not. Fact is fact. I can see the braves switching lillibridge for melky because at the very least, melky has shown he has gold glove potential as a defender. A trade for cabrera makes very good since for the braves, but I still do not see that likely of a match in term's of the yankees needs.

Yankees need not to sign any free agent relievers, we have too much bad luck with them (Karsays,Farnsworths,Stantons,Heredias, Vizcainos, and Nelsons). I really hope we trade for Santana, Pettitte returns, and then we can place Joba back in the setup role.

1.Santana
2.Pettitte
3.Wang
4.Mussina
5.Kennedy (or Hughes, whichever one isn't traded)

SU-Joba
CL-Mo

The Dodgers have a third basemenn, centerfielder and pitcher to trade - LaRoche, Pierre, and Kershaw. They could even throw in another pitcher (Not Bills) that is close. The twins have been asking too much from the Dodgers in the past for Santana (more than any other club) simply because the Ds have a much better pool of players to deal. But, that doesn't mean they make a stupid deal just because they have more desirable payers.

The Yanks could get lillibridge for Melky and play him at 2nd base then sign-off on moving Cano to Minnesota in the Santana trade. I am a Sox fan so this hopefully wouldn't happen, but there would be some logic there if Minny is demanding Hughes/Cano. The Yanks would get a young, athletic player that they could hit 9th and who would likely turn into a better 2b then Cano at some point. Lillibridge could end up being a Chuck Knoblauch lite type (less sb's and hopefully without the throwing to 1b issues. But I am admittedly pretty high on the guy.

...why on earth would the Red Sox want Nathan when they have Papelbon cost-controlled for 4 more years? There's even murmurs that they're going to try and lock up Papelbon with a long-term deal soon.

If they want another power arm as a setup guy, there are much cheaper and just as effective ways to get one. Just because the Red Sox have a trade chip that the Twins are interested in (Coco Crisp), that doesn't mean they'll accept a return that makes no sense for them. Now, if the Twins would fork over Matt Guerrier, that would be something.

Why would the Twins want Juan Pierre? Melky is better than Pierre and costs the league minimum while Pierre makes 11M/Yr I believe. Pierre isn't even worth half that.

Melky to the Braves should require, at the very least, every good minor leaguer in the Braves system.

I have it on good sources (Yankee fans on this blog) that Melky is a stud. The Twins covet him as the centerpiece of any Johan trade while the Marlins have significant interest in building a trade around him for M. Cabrera.

Again, his talent can't be understood by looking at his minor or major league statistics. But, if you watched him play every day you would understand how amazing the guy is! Plus he came up through the Yankee farm system. First ballot HOF'er - no doubt.

Wow bjsguess:

Did you even read the posts above? Or do you just pick random statements from a few idiots and then make sarcastic statements all day, adding nothing to the discussion?

Everyone knows that right now, Melky is a young, cheap, defensively good, offensively average CF.

If some fans have an attachment to him, it's because he and Cano were the first in years, YEARS, to come up from the organizations' ranks.

Jeez let go of it already. It's not like there aren't other homers on here.

Lester and Sox fans.

Cabrera and the Orioles (he has to be good sometime!!!).

---

Anyway. Lillibridge would be nice, but if the Yanks get him, he's probably on his way to Minnesota with Kennedy. Cano isn't going anywhere.

Cano's numbers blow Lillibridge's out of the water.

But that is one kickass name :D

i do not see the braves trading for Melky. last year i could see the trade as they were looking for a left fielder, but the braves have diaz to play left and i think he is more than capable of being a starter. i would also like to see the braves keep lillibridge to play cf this year and then either package him for a big time sp or keep him to be the utility guy then have him play short when chipper hangs them up and we move escobar to 3rd.

If you would like henry14theking I would be happy to provide you a sampler of quotes about Melky from this post as well as others.

These comments from Yankee fans are neither "random" or from a "few" fans.

In the past 2 months I have read ZERO posts about D. Cabrera being a hot young player. Lester does get too much love but at least the guy has legitimate upside. He was a top prospect and if not for the unfortunate development of cancer he would still be a top young stud.

And to call Cabrera average offensively is simply not true. Out of all ML CF's with at least 400 AB's, Cabrera ranks 16th out of 20 in OPS, 16th out of 20 in SLG and 14th out of 20 in OBP. Not a burner either, 15th out of 20 in SB's. His career minor league OPS line was 769 - we aren't talking about a high ceiling guy. He is below LA at best, and awful at worst.

The only redeeming qualities is that he is cheap and plays good defense. Plus he is young so he will really blossom with time (or so Yankee fans say).

You can't imagine how frustrating it is for non-Yankee fans. If I posted on every Miggy/Johan/Haren deal that a fair package would be Reggie Willits for those guys you might get a little sarcastic. Now multiply my posts by about 20 representing the Yankee homers and you will start to get a feel for what it is like for everyone else on this board.

The Yanks do have too many players in the OF. Seems strange to move Cabrera though. I just don't know how any team could be really comfortable from a defensive or health perspective with Abreu, Matsui, and Damon. Odds of one of those guys needing DL time or to take some time at DH is pretty high.
