« Ricciardi Willing To Listen On Burnett | Main | Will Yankees Offer Arbitration To A-Rod? »
According to Bruce Levine of ESPN 1000 in Chicago, the White Sox have re-signed shortstop Juan Uribe at one year, $4.5MM. That represents a 10% discount for the Sox compared to his club option.
Not coincidentally, the Sox no longer have interest in Miguel Tejada after failing to reach an accord with the O's. Apparently at some point Kenny Williams offered Gio Gonzalez and Jose Contreras for him and were rejected. Gio is a pretty solid pitching prospect, and if he offered that package a year ago it may have been reasonable. Jeff Zrebiec's report indicates that teams will only turn to Tejada after the dust settles from Alex Rodriguez and Miguel Cabrera. Zrebiec also adds that O's president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail met with Phillies GM Pat Gillick yesterday, but it's not known who was discussed. One reader emailed me to suggest the Phils have long coveted Erik Bedard.

Can't see the White Sox fans happy about this move, seems like most wants Uribe out.
As for Gio Gonzalez, seems very mixed opinions on him. His minors numbers were outstanding but then again, Alan Horne for the Yanks had great numbers in minors too. Keith Law for example says Gonzalez has a very underwhelming fastball around 85-87 I think and even with a plus plus offspeed pitch, he's probably no more than a 4th starter.
I think it's not a bad package per se, but this early in the offseason, it's probably too early to take this offer. Baltimore was probably right in waiting to see how ARod/Lowell sweepstakes go and then trade Tejada to whoever that loses out.

At least Uribe is consistent.
.235 AVG
20 HR
70 RBI
.270 OBP
Print his 2008 baseball cards now!

this is awful. i wouldnt mind uribe if he wasnt fat, lazy, and rapidly declining defensively. id rather even see them trade for ronny cedeno than bring back uribe. at least theyd only be paying league minimum for a SS who hits .230.

my NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!! comment concerns the phils and bedard, I hope there is not chance this happens, because Cole Hamels and Bedard are shear clones of each other, maybe not in terms of stuff, but numbers wise they appear similar, my guess is that it would take victorino, kendrick, and carrasco to get bedard, and while that is probably a good package in terms of young depth at positions of needs for baltimore, i think they could get more talent for bedard

Would this be an upgrade over John McDonald at SS for the Blue Jays? As a Jays fan I'd see him as an improvement - he's basically Johnny Mac plus 20 homers a year. But Jmac's defence is still solid.

Yikes! The Phils with Bedard would be formidable. NL East is going to be brutal next year.

Would be shocked, Phillies' farm system is pretty limited and Bedard is a nice chip, I think they keep him if there is no good deal out there. He's signed cheaply for 2 years, there is no hurry to deal him this offseason.

Everything I've read about Gio says his fastball is in the 91-93mph range...

Maybe he saw Gio on a bad day I guess, *shrug*.

This is terrible news. Does this make the White Sox less likely to sign David Eckstein?
As a Cardinals fan, I would appreciate some team signing him quickly so I never have to watch him not get to groundballs ever again.

Wasn't that wonderful of Kenny Williams. Offering Jose Contreres for Tejada.
Posted by: cachhubguy | November 07, 2007 at 01:32 PM
Gio would have been the key piece of that deal, actually...
I'm a Sox fan...don't really know what to think quite yet. It's too early to tell. I wouldn't be surprised to see Erick Aybar come over in a trade to provide some competition though. Just a guess.
Posted by: palehose35 | November 07, 2007 at 01:43 PM
Yeah offering Contreras to a team like the Orioles makes no sense. Contreras would have negative value to a team like the O's right now.
Posted by: Teetz | November 07, 2007 at 01:47 PM
I would love to see Erick Aybar as a White Sox bc he woudl go along with the overall direction of the team by returning to youth, speed, and defense.
Of course Jose' C. was lit up last year, but just 2 years ago he what, won 19 consecutive games... i mean, theres still a possibility we coudl return to beign a possibly decent 4th starter or so. And i think Gio can be absoluetily filthy in about another year or so.

Getting Bedard would be a major coup, but I just don't think the Phillies have the chips to do it. Guys like Carrasco and Cardenas are fairly well-regarded, but for a player of Bedard's caliber, not to mention with Peter Angelos in the picture, my guess is the O's will be targeting crap-your-pants prospects like Kershaw.

Williams should have known better than to offer Contreras, A Cuban defector. That would violate the organization's policy of no Cuban defectors on teh team. It might upset Havana Pete's pal Fidel.

If Berard playing for the Phils was at all possible, I'd probably crap my pants.

well as a White Sox fan I am sort of glad this trade fell through!! Gio has some massive potential led the southern league and strikeouts and jose contreras still has the potential to bounce back I think it would be wise to hold onto him while his stock is low and take a chance. Also I think we could get more value trading Garland then becouse we can't trade him and jose and Gio would not even be in the mix in spring training if we did make this trade! Its just like KW to trade for an aging expiring contract. Why can't we quit messing around and just sign A-rod? Are # 1 pick will be protected and now would be the best time to send a great message to our fans coming of our worst season since 1989!

Bedard will not be a Phillie. The Phils just traded for Brad Lidge and will send Brett Myers back into the rotation. Lidge is a great addition to the pen but we have to re-sign Romero to solidify it. He did an incredible job last year down the stretch.
The rotation will go Hamels, Myers, Moyer, Kendrick, and Eaton as of now. I wouldn't mind seeing some competition amongst them especially with the inconsistent Eaton.
