« Cubs Willing To Pay $12-15MM Per Year For Fukudome? | Main | Phillies, Dodgers Not Interested In Inge »
It was suggested yesterday that the Cardinals had a little bit of interest in free agent Barry Bonds. Not so, according to Bernie Miklasz of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Miklasz was told a while back by team owner Bill DeWitt that it wasn't happening.
However, Susan Slusser's article this morning indicates the A's will consider signing Bonds. Billy Beane recently indicated he was leaning toward playing to win in '08, so Bonds makes sense. Slusser talked to a Major League exec who said he'd be shocked if it didn't happen.
Slusser's industry source says two other teams have expressed interest, and Bonds' agent said he's talking to teams from both leagues. Any guesses? It's known that the Rangers, Twins, Mariners, and Tigers aren't interested.

If Beane is playing to win in '08, then yes, Bonds makes sense at DH and no he wont be moving Haren this season. I mean moving Haren, then signing Bonds, doesn't make a whole lot of sense right?

Bonds=ugh. Why any team would have an interest in him anymore is a mystery to me.

The Yankees may be in play if they manage to trade Matsui to the Giants for pitching, then they would have an open spot for DH

I'd sign zombie Hitler if he'd put up a .480 OBP.

Yankees don't need him, we have Giambi already with a combination of Duncan/Damon/Posada rounding out DH time the few game Jason is playing* first.

Might we see Bonds patrolling center for the Braves next year?

Funny that Beane would consider doing this...
Apparently his draft process would totally exclude a guy like Bonds based on his personality baggage -- I guess Beane's obsession with OBP trumps that.

He single handedly would've put Oakland over .500 last year.

The A's make the most sense for Bonds. The fans in Oakland don't hate him, as evidenced by their cheering for him when he passed the Babe in Oakland, and he doesn't have to move his family. He's a Bay Area guy, and he would instantly turn the A's from cellar dweller in purgatory to contender even in the might AL.
Cust will see so many fastballs hitting in front of Bonds, he may hit 50 bombs himself.
Buck, LF
Barton, 1B
Cust, RF
Bonds, DH
Swisher, CF
Chavez, 3B
Ellis, 2B
Suzuki, C
Murphy, SS
That lineup sacrifices a lot defensively in the OF, but that lineup is going to do some damage offensively. It also moves Kotsay into a 4th outfielder role where he is best suited at this point in his career.
Definitely a better team than the 76 win team of '07.

I would pay good money to watch Bonds play center. That's entertainment.

Baggage? Yes. An improved lineup? Hell yes. I like the diea of putting Bonds in there behind Cust to get Jack some good pitches. Barry would be a dramatic improvement in Oakland's lineup.

i dont see this happening, they'd have to play Cust AND Swisher in the OF, bad idea. any chance he goes to Tampa?

"any chance he goes to Tampa?"
I freaking wish, I was trying to champion this idea a few months ago.

on paper it's a great fit and having him in the lineup woul allow them to let Longoria get his feet wet at 3rd
LF-Crawford
2B-Iwamura
CF-Upton
DH-Bonds
1B-Pena
RF-Balldeli/Gomes
3B-Longoria
C-Navarro
SS-Bartlett

Bonds is getting to old to play outfield so that rules out the NL, unless you could get him to move to first base. Its not going to be in the AL East or Central because all thoughs teams either have DH's or can't afford to pay him, so Oakland makes the most sence to me after taking chances on Piazza and Thomas.

at4am -- it's not like Beane is DRAFTING Bonds, looking at him as a 21-year-old kid who could turn into anything. Bonds isn't a kid and we know what he does. Regardless of his "clubhouse cancer" label, he's going to rock at the plate.
This is not a shocking Beane move -- this is exactly what we expect from him. Do you remember what happened after he signed Frank Thomas?
Bonds wants to play in 2008 and the only team that really fits for him is Oakland. As an Oakland fan, I'm hoping this actually happens.

Bonds would probably lose a little moving to the AL, as it has better pitchers and he's not used to them, but he's still a great player.
