« Yankees Still Discussing Santana | Main | Clemens May Not Be Done »
According to David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Braves are interested in Rockies reliever Brian Fuentes. However, they don't want to take on his entire salary.
Fuentes earned $3.5MM in 2007, and will get a raise in his last year before free agency. It wouldn't be surprising to see him up around $5MM for 2008. That's the price of a good setup man these days.
Mike Gonzalez was supposed to be the Braves' late-inning southpaw reliever, but he'll probably be out until June due to Tommy John surgery. It seems the Rockies' asking price is steep for a year of Fuentes - they wanted Aaron Heilman and then some from the Mets, and Jed Lowrie from the Red Sox.

If the Braves want Fuentes, they have to be willing to pay full price (which isn't even that much).

Are the Braves seriously expecting Gonzalez back by June? That seems awfully optimistic for Tommy John recovery, but maybe they know something we don't. I know he went down early in the season last year, but that's a quick recovery time by any standard.

The only way i see the braves going after Fuentes if they also are going after a CF such as Taveres. I feel comfortable with the Aussie as the setup man. "Peter Moylan". Weren't the Red Sox interested in Fuentes. Could the Braves package Fuentes to the Sox for Coco.

If Fuentes is going to cost us 5 million dollars for 1 year i don't see the Braves taking him id rather see someone from the farm system come up.

I could see the braves wanting to make this trade if they feel that 08 is definitely an all or nothing year. And I also agree, if the braves could also get tavares or spilborghs, it would be a good trade to make. However, the Rockies are going to want a lot, and i really do not think the braves would be willing to give up a ton.

I love the idea of Fuentes and Taveras. Would Moylan and Matt Diaz be enough to get this done? However there is one problem I see with Fuentes. He accepted the setup roll with the rox but bitched about not being a closer. Gonzo was the same way last year. Soriano as it stands now will close, but you don't want animosity in your bullpen.

I say if you can't get Taveras in the deal than the only way you trade for fuentes is if you ask the Red Sox if they wanted him and exchange him for Crisp. Maybe you would have to add someone else too.

Tim, DOB has some nice updates to the blog
DOB mentions that the rockies would want a mid rotation starter, and that chuck james name had been mentioned.
Also states that they would want a second baseman, but the braves probably would not part with KJ, and that lillibridge may not be good enough because he has not played second that much.
A Chuck James/Martin prado package was suggested, and DOB said it could be considered. But, he did point out the braves are not going to pay Fuentes more than 5 million to be a setup guy, so the trade is very unlikely to happen without the rockies paying some money.

Also mentions the braves were hard after him before Ohman, so the asking price may have been to high for fuentes.

maybe the braves trade for him and if gonzo comes back and is healthy they could spin him at the trade deadline to a team looking for a closer? i DO NOT want ot give up Moylan to get him however.
i am really interested to see what they do with lillbridge, because he is really jammed for playing time in the majors. do you guys see him being packaged in a deal or maybe keep him in AAA and hope his value skyrockets and then trade him. any thoughts?

The Braves can do just fine with Moylan and Ring until Gonzo comes back. Don't go and blow money and players on Fuentes, please.

I would not include Peter Moylan in any trade for bullpen talent. He's a darn good pitcher that has closer potential. At times last year he was the most reliable pitcher in the pen, and as a player with little MLB service time he is relatively inexpensive.
My preferance in the OF is for Spilborghs over Tavares. A trade of Spilborghs and Fuentes for Chuck James and another player should seriously be considered if offered.

I'm not used to all of this trading by the Braves. It kind of scares me. But the idea of a bullpen comprised of Fuentes, Moylan, Gonzo, and Soriano makes me salivate. Holy crud. It could make sense too. Rarely do players come back from tommy-john surgury in one year. Gonzo will not be ready for the season to be sure, and I don't think he plays at all. Without him, there isn't much depth.
