« Kearns Unlikely To Be Dealt | Main | Kevin Mench DFA'd »
Things have slowed down just a bit lately on the hot stove. Maybe we can try to bust out the ol' mailbag. Email me a question at mlbtraderumors@gmail.com.

I don't think my inquiries are worthy of a mailbag email, but I had been wondering recently when we'd see a return to the "Needs and Luxuries" series.
You also did a post called something like "You're the GM" ... I don't think you intended it to be a series per se, but I think that could be interesting to revisit too, with other teams and other scenarios.

I am still interested in knowing if the Cardinals have a chance at trading Rolen and dealing for Tejada? I also would like to see LIvan Hernandez in Cardinal red. Thanks for the opportunity.

Cards06
Are the Cards still not willing to pick up any contract?
Giants could use him, but not at a steep price.

if mineral oil comes from minerals, and vegetable oil comes from vegetables...where does baby oil come from?

I think that the Cardinals are willing to eat some contract money, but they want alot in return. They should have traded him to the Brewers for Capuano and let them eat the salary. Then go after Tejada. Just my opinion...

The injury risk factor and price will stop them from getting high value IMO.
Giants can offer a pitcher and prospects.

Any pitcher NOT named Cain or Lincecum that is.

I'm kind of shocked at the position the Cards seem to be taking on Rolen. They do know he's had two major surgeries on his shoulder and his production and durability leave a lot to be desired right? He's also now had run ins with two managers in two cities, coincidence? It's also not like he's 25 you know.
Eat the salary, or like the last post, trade for another big contract at a position you like more.

I agree that they need to understand that he has had previous surgeries and is coming off a year in which he did not perform well at all. But I also agree that Rolen "healthy" is a tremendous 3rd baseman and has the ability to hit 25= homeruns. So I agree they should trade and thats it. I dont want them to trade and eat salary. That will not help our situation any at all.

Have the Whitesox given up on Brian Anderson? Despite the fact he is not hitting, he is such a gazelle in CF. Have they considered trading him? What is the current situation?

Rolen is nowhere near disireable right now. At $5m-$7m/year he might be worth the risk. However, I wouldn't be sending any decent prospects to the Cards for him.
I think that there is just as good of a chance that he never plays well again as there is that he returns to a 300 hitter with 20 hr's. Why gamble money AND prospects if that is the case?
Posted by: bjsguess | December 10, 2007 at 12:28 PM
I am willing to say that no matter what, Rolen is going to perform this year. He for one has a point to prove, and two he is not ready to retire. everyone knows that Rolen is one of the greatest 3rd baseman in the game still. He will perform in 2008, wherever he is.

What about a Boston-Padres or Boston-Giants trade involving Coco Crisp. Maybe the Pads of Giants dealing a bullpen arm or two? The Padres are in need of a center fielder and the Giants are in need of, well, just about everything.
Coco seems to fit the bill of a young, solid-if-not-spectacular offensive player who will give you very good defense. Plus, if I remember correctly, his contract is very reasonable-certainly less than someone like Rowand will make via FA.
Anyone see a match with either of these teams?
Posted by: | December 10, 2007 at 12:36 PM
Anyone up for a friendly bet? No money just for fun? I say Rolen will hit 280+ and 20+ homeruns in 2008.
Posted by: | December 10, 2007 at 12:37 PM
I'll take you up on that. I'd say he's more inclined to hit .270, 10 HR, while coming in a close 2nd to Jeff Kent in the "angriest older white player who hates his team" category.
Posted by: Chillin | December 10, 2007 at 12:59 PM
I agree that if he is with the Cardinals he will not be happy. But he wants to prove to another team he can play. So it is a deal. We should exchange e-mails to keep each other posted.

Rolen has hit .300 one time in his career. Once. The chances that he hits .300 next year would be slim to none if he was healthy. I don't see any team taking on his full salary unless they are trading next to nothing.
