Heyman's Latest: Santana, Bedard, Willis

UPDATE, 12-3-07 at 5:48pm: Jayson Stark confirms the Reds' interest in Willis.  However he suggests that the Marlins would ask for Homer Bailey and then some in return.

FROM 12-3-07 at 11:41am:

SI.com's Jon Heyman checks in with the latest hot stove banter he's hearing.  There's some confusion here as Heyman has contrary info to other published sources.

  • Heyman believes Johan Santana is "more likely than not" to get traded at the Meetings, and quite possibly today.
  • Heyman says the Red Sox and Yankees are the two teams Santana would waive his veto power for, running contrary to LENIII's recent note.
  • Heyman reports that the Mets offered Gomez/Humber/Heilman for Erik Bedard, though as you may recall Roger Rubin said it was Lastings Milledge and not Gomez.  Whatever it was, the Orioles weren't impressed with the offer.  Heyman says the Mets feel they still have a chance.  The Dodgers, Mariners, and loser of Santana will be in on Bedard as well.
  • Heyman seems to indicate the Marlins are still asking for Adenhart and Ervin Santana in a Miguel Cabrera deal, despite Peter Gammons' comment this morning.
  • The Reds may pursue Dontrelle Willis.  I was thinking they might, the fit makes sense.  A package with Josh Hamilton and one of the Reds' stud pitchers might be required though.  Also keep in mind that Joe Frisaro said the Marlins plan to keep Willis at least until July.
  • Heyman suggests the Mets could re-acquire Xavier Nady to play right field for them.

For the life of me I can't understand why a team would trade a stud major league ready prospect for a guy that they'll have to pay a bunch of money or a guy with as many question marks as Dontrelle Willis. Makes no sense.

At this point, Hamilton is too much to give up for Willis, even without adding Cueto or Bailey.

Why aren't the Reds interested in Bedard? They have the prospects to get it done and he is much better than Willis. What would it take to get this done?

I hope they don't try to get Willis, at least not at this point. I would feel much better with them trying to get Haren or Bedard or sign Carlos Silva. I don't think Willis is the way to go. After last year he is too suspect.

What are the odds the d-bacls and Bedard or Haren. They have the pieces, easily. They also can afford Bedard for 2 years or Haren for 3. Either guy would give them a sick rotation. I wish the Diamondbacks had the money to extend Santana. They could trump the Red Sox or Yankees offer relatively easily with some of their MiL bats.

I think Heyman's behind the times on his assumption that Johan would only go to Boston/New York.

Nrmax, I respectfully disagree because the one thing that the dbacks do lack is young pitching, and so they may not be able to matchup as good because of the yankees and red sox can offer a blend of prospects. Now, in terms of the orioles, they need as many young position plays as possible, so that could work. The dbacks also are probably not going to give up both chris b. young and upton in a deal, so they may not really have a good chance at bedard either.

Well, I respectfully disagree back :). From what I have heard, the Twinkies want back some major league ready hitters. They are loaded with pitchers, albeit no of the hughes mold. I think a deal something like Chris Young, Carlos Gonzalez, Tracy/Reynolds, Callaspo might get it done. They also have other pieces like Quentin, maybe even Drew to deal. There might have to be some minor pieces getting switched around or maybe Arizona needs a little bit more. They get a guy that coould be their next Torii Hunter, their future RF for chen Cuddy leaves, a 2B and a 3B. You may be right about them not being able to get Bedard, I am sure they would want good young pitching back. I am not exactly sure what BB would want for Haren, but like the twins, he could use a SS, CF, 3B, and some other position guys. Was just a suggestion. I basicallu just brought it up because it would be nice to see teams besides the Yankees and Sox going after the biggest names in the sport, not because I am expecting the D Backs to land one of these guys.

Whoops, we were discussing the D-Baks for Bedard and Haren, not Santana. My bad, gotcha.

I REALLY hope Omar is going to be talking to Pittsburgh these next few days.

He has a RF that can't hit lefties, a LF that can't stay healthy, and NO real backup 1B.

Nady solves all of those problems. Platoon him with Church in RF, start him in LF when Alou gets hurt, and give Delgado some rest every now and then.

If Omar finished up the winter by getting Nady and a pitcher like Blanton, I would consider the team to be improved over last season, and wouldn't be so quick to call the Sillies the favorites to win the East.

When is Omar going to get it into his head that no one wants Heilman or Humber anymore? That ship sailed 2 years ago when they both had actual value.

If they want Bedard, the deal has to start with Gomez (or Martinez) and Mulvey - and then some.

Gomez, F-Mart, and Mulvey?

tolo316 you make alot of sense, because humber was undergoing Tommy john surgery 2 years ago so im sure he had an "actual value"

Theres no way that Mets/Orioles deal is going down unless Tejada for Reyes, or Mora for Wright, are is a part of it.

@klipp13

Ironically, Humber has as much value now as he did during his Tommy John recovery - zero.

I think the Mets are gonna need to offer more than that, at least pitching wise. Gomez is a good start, he could be an impact player, but a reliever a maybe #4-#5 starter is not nearly enough.
Heilman would probably be around 4.00 to 4.50 ERA in the AL. I think the Mets may either have to give up Pelfry with Humber and maybe another lower level prospect, but who knows. They should only have to give up 1 of Gomez/Fernando Martinez, because 2 of them is kind of alot.

I think something like this could be acceptable:
Mets Get:
Erik Bedard

Orioles Get:
Carlos Gomez
Mike Pelfry/Phil Humber
Deolis Guerra

In that case, there will be no deal. That would make no sense from the Reds' perspective.
