« A Brief Rumor Hiatus | Main | Nats Shopping Rauch For A Shortstop? »
UPDATE, 12-4-07 at 2:41pm: Joe Capozzi agrees - separate deals if anything.
UPDATE, 12-4-07 at 1:29pm: MLB.com's Joe Frisaro has a source indicating that the Tigers are interested in Willis or Cabrera and not necessarily both.
UPDATE, 12-4-07 at 12:23pm: According to Danny Knobler, the Tigers feel they're being used by the Marlins to jack up the price for other teams like the Angels. The trade talks between Detroit and Florida are characterized as discussions rather than trade negotiations. Knobler says Dombrowski doesn't want to trade Maybin, but I can't see this happening otherwise.
FROM 12-4-07 at 11:02am:
Ken Rosenthal has an update with a whopper of a trade rumor.

Billy Bean values Blanton at the same level as Brad Penny?
God I'd love to punch that arrogant pr*ck in the face. I would never want to deal with him, ever.

Wow... that would be an insane move. Forget anyone else who even thinks the word "splash" this offseason if this goes down.
Posted by: FineHamAbounds | December 04, 2007 at 11:07 AM
Please let this not be true. I don't want to face Cabrera 19 times a year. KW needs to get serious about getting into this if the Tigers are involved.
Posted by: Andrew Cabiness | December 04, 2007 at 11:08 AM
that would certainly make the tigers the powerhouse of the central.

Jesus Christ.
Posted by: whimser | December 04, 2007 at 11:09 AM
The Tigers have one of the best prospects in the game at both of the positions that the marlins need, so I could see this trade happening.
Posted by: bravesbeast | December 04, 2007 at 11:12 AM
That could be a move by Dombrowski to drive up the price even more on mig cab to block KW and some other AL teams from getting him. It could be similar to what KW did to the tigers a few years back when they were attempting to acquire soriano. KW jumped in and was supposedly the front runner for him just so the tigers couldnt get him and then just drove up the price out of reach. not likely though, just a thought.

I see whispers about the White Sox being interested in Cabrera (who isn't?), but I cannot see any package that would compare with what the Angels have on the table or to that of the Detroit offer. Can anyone see a comparable package from the Southsiders? Fields +...

Maybin and Miller would be an insane haul.
Posted by: jclay | December 04, 2007 at 11:15 AM
I just traded joba chamberlain, delmon yong, ervin santana for erik bedard, donald veal (throw in), and gaby sanchez in a dynasty league.
thots on my deal?
Posted by: bsox21 | December 04, 2007 at 11:23 AM
This deal would be the biggest move of the offseason by far. I just wonder how accurate this rumors is. Plus, would it be a straight two for two trade or would other players (presumably from the Tigers' end) be involved?
Posted by: tolo316 | December 04, 2007 at 11:26 AM
Hummm… So a Kitty-Cat team which did a faceplant in 07 because of its pitching despite having a monster offense is talking about a deal to hurt their pitching and future for an upgrade in offense? You mean we would get to face Willis instead of Miller for the next couple years? And we get to face an overweight soon-to-be 1B/DH instead of a Grady Sizemore clone in CF? And they have to include even more prospects (ideally Zoo-Mate is even included)? And they add like 30-40M in salary???
As much as “Cabrera to the Tigers” leaves a nasty taste in my mouth, I think I could deal with this as an Indians fan…
Posted by: darkstar1661 | December 04, 2007 at 11:26 AM
It would have to start with Fields and Gio Gonzalez, whos the organizations top prospect and a miami native. They could possibly spin Quentin in a trade now too, he still has some value and is young and cheap for the marlins. But i really dont think its possible, but you really never know
Posted by: trober81 | December 04, 2007 at 11:27 AM
I didnt think Willis could be moved because his value is so low right now. FL is going to have to consede that Willis isnt the player he once was for this to get done. I mean not only is he 1 year away from FA but he'll be moving out of the pitchers park in miami were he had a +5 era last season. The Tigers should hold firm and be like, look, we know you dont want his salery on your books next year.
Posted by: trek81 | December 04, 2007 at 11:28 AM
I agree, the Sox don't have anywhere near enough to aquire Cabrera. At best we got Fields, Gio and Broadway. Not much else to offer unless they want Sweeney or Anderson. Not even close.
Posted by: BIGHURT35 | December 04, 2007 at 11:36 AM
Why does the National League exist? Is it to develop some good players to later be traded to the A.L.(Big Leagues)?
Posted by: Blutarski | December 04, 2007 at 11:38 AM
I think getting Schneider from the Nats may have hurt Omar here. Taking on Hernandez and his entire contract would definitely help the Mets in an offer to get Bedard, but they really don't have the room for him anymore.

Wow. This would be a serious trade.
The Angels are already offering too much. If the Tigers are willing to give up Miller/Maybin + others then so be it.
I just hope the Angels don't get desperate and up their offer to land the guy.

Darkstar-
If you read ESPN, you'd see that Ozzie Guillen is already talking about Cabrera being in the best shape of his life (he's lost 15 lbs). Poof to your donut joke.
I wouldn't mind having Willis. Losing Miller/Maybin would hurt, but at the same time the Tigers are already very deep in the OF position, and considering they aren't a team that steals too often, Maybin isn't necessarily fitting into the system.
Cabrera is a PROVEN top-5 player in baseball. Anybody the Tigers have given up haven't proven anything yet. What one doesn't realize is that for the trade to be about even, both Miller and Maybin would have pan out as good/great ballplayers. There is a solid chance that one of them might not. Plus the Tigs still have a lot of young depth (Raburn, Clevlen, Thames) in the OF.

Fascinating and Ozzie Guillen comment that didn't have an f-bomb, or some slandarous remark. I'm shocked. Though he more than likely said "that little f*g is in the best f'ng shape of his f'ng f*ggy life."
Posted by: ArodSucksAtLife | December 04, 2007 at 01:11 PM
I like the move. Miller has a mechanical issue. He lands on his striding foot off to the 3B side of the plate. This allows him to put the release point even further away from center of plate then normal. It also means even when he is effective he throws A LOT of pitches. He had a club leading 19.2 pitches per inning last season.
As to Maybin? Who knows? He did look overwhelmed last season.
To the Cleveland fan talking about CFers going to 1B/DH. What are you talking about? Curtis Granderson is the Tigers CFer, not Cameron Maybin.
Posted by: MrSean | December 04, 2007 at 01:14 PM
Oops...I meant the Miller lands on the 1B side. Dang lefies and my dyslexia.
Posted by: MrSean | December 04, 2007 at 01:33 PM
ArodSucksAtLife,
hehehe...
Doesnt matter if he is playing CF for the Kitties or not ~ Maybin projects to a Sizemore clone and he is a true CFer. And he’s 20 with less than 2 years experience in pro-ball ~ ya don’t think it is logical for him to look a little overmatched in his first few games?
Ozzie said that Cabrera is in the best shape of his life, did he? Humm, then why is he “beginning a rigorous workout program like nothing he's ever done before” if he is already in amazing shape? He said he was out to prove he doesn’t need to be moved from 3B ~ that on top of Ozzies questionable statements means he will be a 3B for years to come? Yeah, ok…
And you guys would rather have Willis and his 10ish-Million contract instead or Miller? Really? And ya want to give up even more on top of that for it all? Really? Planning on increasing payroll by 30% are ya guys, while simultaneously taking away the two most ML-Ready impact talents the club has… Ok, cool deal ~ like I said, I wont mind…

Why is it that Gammons is the only one reporting that the Marlins have lessoned the offer to the Angels? With that guys track record, I'm sure he is wrong.

Here hopes so

Here is some hope
"• The Twins and Angels continue to talk about a Johan Santana trade. Many of the same players mentioned in the Miguel Cabrera sweepstakes -- Howie Kendrick, Brandan Wood, Nick Adenhart, and possibly Jeff Mathis or Reggie Willits -- would be included in a package for Santana.
• It is believed that the Angels haven't talked with the Marlins since last night, and Miguel Cabrera is off their radar screen -- at least for now."
