Odds and Ends: Barrett, Koufax, Santana

A few notes from this evening...

  • Michael Barrett and the Padres avoided arbitration, arriving at a $3.5MM deal.  A little less than I expected given his $4.6MM salary in '07.  If some team acquires Barrett on the cheap he could bounce back if he's comfortable.  Wasn't long ago he was one of the better-hitting catchers in the game.  Is there even a slight chance he wouldn't embarrass himself back at the hot corner?
  • Great ShysterBall post in reference to Curt Schilling's attempt to call out Roger Clemens.
  • Sandy Koufax did not do steroids.
  • Derrick Goold looks at how David Eckstein ended up leaving the Cardinals despite his desire to stay.
  • LENIII says it's possible nothing has happened on the Johan Santana front since the Meetings ended.  Neal also names Kris Benson as a pitcher on the Twins' radar.  They were one of many teams watching his recent session.  Plus they were eyeing Glendon Rusch before he signed with the Padres.

Tim, the article is up now.

La Velle essentially says that it's still at the same point on Santana (the 2 rumored Boston packages, and the Yanks internally debating).

He said the Twins' scouts watched Benson pitch (I figured they might have been) and that they had been interested in Glendon Rusch.

The Twins have been interested in Benson at leats a couple of times in the past, so this makes sense.

Hope that helps.

Hey Tim: You better watch out! Looks like you can buy sports rumors on EBay, according to this add on your site:

Tim, does it really make sense for Barrett to market himself as a 3B? It seems his offense would be below average there even if he does bounce back. Same thing with Iguchi when he was saying he didn't want to play third, I'm not sure why he would do better marketting himself as a 3B than as a 2B.

whats the purpose of saying that sandy koufax didnt do steroids....a lot of good players didnt do steroids...big deal

Read the post you pathetic excuse for a human being.

Barrett... at 3B... BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

/Yeah that's a no by the way.

Sure...yeah...it was cortisone...right, that's what I meant...of course. Duh.

Wow... I'm glad we cleared up that difficult Koufax situation.

Santana stays in Minnesota. I've been saying it all along.

Sure, Koufax didn't do 'steroids', but is what he did any different from a player taking HGH today? This is what agitates me about the whole PED situation, and something I was impressed by when Jose Canseco brought it up in his book. That is, once doctors figure out how to properly administer steroids, they will more or less become an everyday thing. Essentially taking the place of vitamins. They will, presumably, be in the wave of scientific discoveries with 'designer babies' - and not Paris Hilton.

So if we are going to close the book of guilt and tarnish the records of those who have taken HGH or tested positive for steroids (pre MLB ban), should we not do the same for one who did something that at the time was illegal? I can't see how anyone can justify going both ways on this.
