Odds and Ends: Villarreal, Cano, Rowand

Alright let's round 'em up.

  • This was one I was going to pass on posting, but it's pretty dead right now.  The Astros signed newly acquired reliever Oscar Villarreal to a two-year deal.  He was already under team control through 2008.  The MLB.com article adds that Ed Wade's interest in Livan Hernandez and Bartolo Colon is low, and talks with Jon Lieber pretty much died.
  • The Yankees pulled Robinson Cano out of Winter Ball.  The word is that he doesn't want to aggravate a calf injury.  You could read into it and speculate he's a part of trade talks.  Seems like a stretch though.  I believe the Yanks also pulled Melky Cabrera from Winter Ball; we know he's in trade talks.
  • R.J. Anderson's book about the Devil Rays and Chuck LaMar is now available for free download.
  • J.C. Bradbury says the Aaron Rowand signing is the best free agent signing of the offseason.  Personally, I don't hate it.  I don't like it too much either though.

Rowand is a decent signing. Not GREAT, but not bad.

I don't think its even good. If you are going to pay a guy that kind of money to be a middle of the order hitter, make sure he has put up middle of the order numbers for more than 1 year, which happens to be his contract year. I don't hate it, but they needed a better bat than that.

Unfortunately, that will be the going rate these days. Plus since the Giants came in last place, they will have to overpay some to get big players.

Better than paying Arod 300 mill

WAY better than paying Torii 90 mill

Agreed, much better than the Tori Hunter deal. I just think Rowand is more of a #6 hitter, not a 3 or 4, which he is in that awful lineup. They are rebuilding though, and have a pretty nasty rotation for years to come, I just think they need 2 big bats, and Rowand is a nice complement. He is not one of those big bats.

This signing brings a leader to the Giants clubhouse. The Giants aren't going to contend this year or next but by 2010, Rowand will be a valuable piece to the Giants puzzle.

Rowand was not a good signing. They should've used the CF spot a for talented young player.

Better than Torii deal, I agree on that.

Giants are the only team i can think of that might actually NEED Giambi lol i thought they should've signed Lamb, now McPherson should be a prime target (AND Giambi)

LF-Lewis
SS-Vizquel
CF-Rowand
1B-Giambi
RF-Ortemier
C-Molina
3B-McPh
2B-?
P

The thing I like best about this signing is the Bonds spectacle will be gone and a positive attitude/clubhouse guy is here!

The kids can learn tons from Rowand...Just glad he doesn't play RF, we have a brick wall there!!!

Now the Giants have three backup outfielders that could start on other teams. I think their best trading partner is someone who they wouldn't trade with- the Padres. Trade one of Lewis or Davis and one of Misch, Correia or Sanchez for Kevin Kouzmanoff. The outfielder gets more at-bats on the Padres, and takes over for Edmonds when he's injured and then retired. Kouz plays first for the Giants, becomes the middle of order hitter they need. The new Padres starter fills in for Prior until healthy and becomes a swing-man for when Wolf might be injured. Opens up a spot for Headley. Maybe the Padres throw in a fringe prospect. Not gonna happen, but it would make plenty of sense for both teams.

"This signing brings a leader to the Giants clubhouse. The Giants aren't going to contend this year or next but by 2010, Rowand will be a valuable piece to the Giants puzzle."

That is if Rowand is still even near the kind of player he was last year. With all the wear and tear he takes I think he'll decline quickly as he gets into his 30's. By 2010, when Upton, Kemp, Young, Loney, Tulo, Jackson, LaRoche, Reynolds, Headley, etc. are all establishing themselves as top players, Rowand will be nothing more than mediocre 7 hitter.

"Rowand was not a good signing. They should've used the CF spot a for talented young player."

And this is far easier said than done. Well duh you would rather use the spot on a cheaper "talented young player", but there really aren't ton of those out there, especially in San Francisco. Considering the Giants don't have really any talented young position players outside of Schierholtz and Villalona, if they didn't sign Rowand they probably would have Dave Roberts or Rajai Davis (age 27) in center. Personally I think the Giants missed a huge oppurtunity in Josh Hamilton. Hamilton has middle of the order potential and was avaliable at a reasonable price. If Texas got him for Edison Volquez and a prospect, then don't you think that the Giants could've gotten Hamilton for Jonathan Sanchez and a prospect.

any chance of Dave Roberts & Ray Durham to CHW for Juan Uribe if SF pays most of the $?

Rotoworld:
Astros agreed to terms with RHP Oscar Villarreal to a two-year, $2.85 million contract with a club option for 2010.

Villarreal gets a $250,000 signing bonus, $1 million in 2008 and $1.6 million in 2009. The option, which doesn't in.clude a buyout, is worth $2 million. Signing middle relievers already under control to multiyear deals tends to be a poor strategy, but there's not much wrong with this one. If Villarreal turns out to be a bust, the Astros are only on the hook for an extra $1.5 million. Had he posted a sub-4.00 ERA in 2008, it might have taken something like $9 million for three years to re-sign him

"any chance of Dave Roberts & Ray Durham to CHW for Juan Uribe if SF pays most of the $?"

No. They have better, younger, cheaper options in Jerry Owens and Danny Richar.

I will take Arod and his contract every day over Rowand and his contract. That almost 900 OPS from 2007 should drop about 100 points or more this year. Absolutely awful lineup with no protection, in a terrible hitting park, after being in the best lineup in the NL and hitting in the best hitters park in the NL. He is on the opposite extreme here. Man, if Lincecum and Cain werent a part of the Giants they might be like the worst baseball team ever.

nrmax...

And how do you field the rest of your team with Arod's contract? Only the Yanks can affor that.

Scribble, I agree 100 percent on Hamilton. I was thinking exactly the same thing, it would have been great if the Giants could have picked him up for Correia or Sanchez plus 1. I like the way you think :).

I don't think so, on Hamilton. The Reds obviously wanted Volquez and think he has a higher ceiling. He probably does, over the fourth-fifth starter ceiling guys the Giants would be offering. It isn't like the Reds wanted to just give him away, they actually got a good arm who has been a top prospect a few times and potentially a good reliever.

It's not fair to treat Rowand as a contract-year wonder. He was excellent in '04 (his OPS was about .900). After a disappointing '05 in Chicago, he regained his form in Philly in '06. He hit 7 homers and had an OPS over .900 through April and part of May but then planted his face on the centerfield railing, missed a bunch of time and struggled mightily when he returned. I'm not sure if he's a guy you want hitting third over the long haul, but it's a joy watching him play the game. Giants fans are going to be happy the team spent the money to get him.

I seriously doubt the White Sox would take Dave Roberts, but Randy Winn or Rajai Davis might interest them.

I also know the Sox would like to get rid of Joe Crede, Juan Uribe, and Mike MacDougal, so what package among those players would the Giants take for one of those outfielders?

"nrmax...

Point taken. I like Rowand, I just think his numbers will take a hit big time. But, like you said, when a crappy team is trying to get better, the first big name sort of signing is usually questionable. You have to do it to show other future free agents you are serious. Mets did it with Pedro, Tigers with Pudge, Royals in the process of improving and signing Meche to big money, so hey, if it helps sign some more big time players next year, then it is easily worth it.

"It isn't like the Reds wanted to just give him away, they actually got a good arm who has been a top prospect a few times and potentially a good reliever."

I dont know, you make it sound like Volquez is Gallardo or something. Sanchez has been a highly ranked prospect, and also has nice upside, and he is a lefty.

Winn has a NTC and is due over $16 million over the next two years. Davis would be good, but you have to ask if he's that much better than Owens, and then Ramirez. I'd love to see some of those extra arms gone, though.

Sanchez missed a lot of time with injury last year, and then got shelled in the NL West. His value is definitely lower than Volquez's right now.

Yes, only the Yankees could afford to give A-Rod that contract, but, you have to analyze it in context.

I think the A-Rod contract will hurt the Yankees less at the end of it than the Tori Hunter contract will hurt the Angels. Especially when you consider that the A-Rod contract is front loaded. Well, A-Rod could make more those last few years of the deal, but only if he's moving to the top of the all time home run list. And if he does that, the Yankees are making enough money out of it that the contract won't hurt.

Winn has a limited NTC...

10 teams he can't be traded to. Not sure which 10 though.

The White Sox will never deal with the Giants after the Giants swept in and stole away the fire and passion of the Chisox savior, Aaron Rowand.

The Giants best deal of the winter was not trading Lincecum.

Rowand ranks well behind that.

I think this debate proves that this is by far the most boring week in baseball/sports every year. Now back to a meaningless BC vs. Michigan State game...I am losing it.

Where's Tim? He ok today? No Villarreal update?

They have it at MLB Fleece Factor

Yeah, man, I know. Fleece Factor is a great site, they're quick too.

I'm sorry, but Rowand's defense is totally overrated. Yeah every once in a while he makes a great play, but he also misplayed atleast 20 easy balls that got to the wall and turned into triples. He lost a lot. Also he did have a decent amount of assists, but his arm is pretty weak. I can't wait for people in San Fran to see his d daily. It's like Bobby Abreu. You can do by stats and get a gold glove. As long as you don't touch the ball in the outfield it isn't an error. So the 20 balls that Rowand misplayed go unnoticed. I watched all 162 games and I love his grit, but he is highly overrated.

One point about A-Rod's contract... Don't forget the twins owner is the richest in baseball.. the only difference between teams like the Yanks, Mets, Bosox.. and teams like the twins are that the first 3 are willing to spend the money.

Phillies, defensive metrics show that Rowand is a very good center fielder. He's not elite anymore like he was with the White Sox, but he's far from hurting his club. He also has a strong arm if I recall correctly, he threw into the stands a few times from mid center field. While grit and hustle might seem "totally overrated" at times, it looks like it is what makes guys like Aaron Rowand and Eric Byrnes very good defensively.

Casper,

Carl Polhad is likely the wealthiest owner in baseball. But because of it should he take money out of his pocket to compete with the large markets?

The twins, even when they owned the AL middle in 2002-2004 still seldom made the National television weekly broadcasts. In 2007 the Twins drew 2,296,383 just under the AL Average of 2,527,968 last year but they still don’t generate the TV money that the Yankees, Red Sox, Angles do. They also can’t charge per ticket price that the Yankees/Red Sox can because of their market. When I lived in Minnesota in 1999 I got season tickets for $99. Yep $99 for the 81 games and I was 7 rows up in left field. Good luck with that in any of the large markets, even in 1999.

Let’s look at the 2007 playoff teams and their payrolls too

AL:
NY Yankees - 189,639,045
Boston - 143,026,214
LA Angles - 109,251,333
Cleveland - 61,673,267

NL:
Colorado - 54,424,000
Arizona - 52,067,546
Chicago Cubs - 99,670,332
Philadelphia - 89,428,213

The Twins are in the 21st largest baseball market but had the 18th largest payroll. Ahead of the Texas Rangers who are in the 5th largest market. The Twins had payrolls larger than 3 of the 8 teams in the playoffs and larger than 1 of the 2 in the World Series, so large Payroll doesn’t equate championships. (2006 St Louis Cardinals)

I would love for the Twins to keep Santana. But he is going to require at least a 5 year $100 deal. He made $13 million last year, not too shabby considering it was over 18% of the entire payroll for the twins. Is it in their best interest to keep Santana? What if he blows out his elbow next year. Then they would have $20 Million likely 35% of their payroll in a guy who can’t pitch, and the anchor of their team. The Sox/Yankees/Mets could absorb that much better than the Twins. I am not saying the Twins couldn’t raise their payroll a bit more, maybe even $10 Million but for you to say that Polhad is the wealthiest owner doesn’t matter even a little bit.

Remember baseball is a business after all and I can’t think of any owners that are in it to lose money.

A) Saw Villarreal, passed on it because it's pretty boring and I have nothing to add

B) Please stop pimping the fleece factor here, it is getting old

Tim,

My apologies. No harm meant. Love this site.

Regards...
