« Rosenthal's Latest: Roberts, Barrett, Piazza | Main | The Winter Meetings Begin »

Orioles Want Jered Weaver, Brandon Wood For Tejada

Mike DiGiovanna of the L.A. Times writes his "State of the Angels" Winter Meetings intro, and some information is revealed regarding Miguel Tejada.

As you know, Tejada is the Angels' fallback option if they can't get Miguel Cabrera.  Well, it doesn't sound like the price is reasonable on Tejada either.  The Orioles want both third baseman Brandon Wood and starter Jered Weaver for him.  The Angels would be comfortable with one of Joe Saunders or Ervin Santana plus a lesser prospect.

Given the lack of interest in Tejada and the multiple question marks, it's surprising to see such a huge demand for talent.  No wonder Ken Rosenthal said the Giants, Astros, and Cards don't have the young talent to get Tejada.  And by the way - the Orioles won't be eating any of the $26MM owed to Tejada over the next two years.

Wait Wait Wait....... AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA...... maybe we are now starting to see why stoneman never really traded his prospects.

Sounds like Angelos thinks he can pull a "I'm going to screw you" trade.

Orioles can keep him.

Enjoy pissing away $13m next as your team comes in last place next year.

I wouldn't do Tejada for Wood right now. Let along Tejada for Wood and Weaver. The O's are crazy.

Just don't think a defensive liability at 3B who didn't hit 20 HR's or above .300 is worth a young, cheap #3 pitcher and our top prospect.

Tejada's line from 2007:
296/357/442

His SLG % has dropped from:
2004: 534
2005: 515
2006: 498
2007: 442

You don't have to be a statistician to figure out what direction he is heading.

Wood, BTW, posted the following line at AAA this year:

272/338/497

The kid is 22 and has boasted SLG %'s of 672, 552, and 497 in his full seasons while in the minors.

*** Apologize for typos ... no more commenting past midnight for me ***

BTW - Tim ... do you ever sleep? How in the world can you run multiple sites, stay up all hours, and hold down a full-time job. Unbelievable.

LOL. These perennial losers are never going to get a trade done with demands like these. What a sad organization the Orioles are.

Plus, the funny thing is, Tejada's decline started RIGHT AFTER his name came up in steroid allegations.

This guy is a given to be on the Mitchell report, and asking for these players for him makes it that more funny.

as a cub fan i can honestly say that mcphail isa gm out to rob you blind . he trained hendry to be just like him but hendry has gone out on a limb .mcphail won't . look at some of the trades that the cubs have made under the mcphail/hendry era ...derrick lee for hee seop choi , aramis ramirez for jose hernandez and 2b hill , todd hundly for eric karos and mark gruzilanek(sp) . mcphails trades are mostly lopsided .so if the cubs go after a oriole stud like roberts , tejada , or beddard , it will be interesting to see who screws who . i'd probably give hendry an already edge since he got three of the cubs prospects for steve trachsell .

Everyone responds to trade offers as if unaware of the process of negotiations. Of course, the Orioles ask for more than they expect. If they ask for what they expect, they can only get less.

Tejada is worth far more than you respondents are suggesting. With the Angels next year, he'd play a decent 3rd, and hit .310 with 25 homers and 110 rbi. That's not worth two decent young BUT UNPROVEN players (I know Jered Weaver's proven--the O's won't get him, nor expect to)?

this deal should stop at weaver, max. then again, that might even be to much...

I guess you guys are right. What the O's should do is throw in Bedard. Bedard and Tejada for Willits, maybe.

No, no. come to think of it, that's still not enough. Maybe Markakis, Bedard, and Tejada for Willits. What do you think?

Hahahaha, you've got to be kidding me. A near washed up Tejada, who is coming back from a wrist injury. The injury suggests his power numbers will probably be down. They want Wood and Weaver... Now I could see if it was Jeff Weaver and Kerry Wood but not Brandon and Jered! Gimme a break Os

The Orioles have lost their damn minds.

"Everyone responds to trade offers as if unaware of the process of negotiations. Of course, the Orioles ask for more than they expect. If they ask for what they expect, they can only get less."

Why is this some sort of accepted truism?

By recent accounts, the Twins have pretty much told teams inquiring on Santana what it would take them to get a deal done, and they haven't wavered one bit.

I've heard the same said of the Marlins. Give them the guy(s) they asked for right from the start, and it's a deal. Don't, and it's not.

Playing the whole "ask for the stars but settle for the moon" game is by no means necessary.

You're right. There are other ways to negotiate. But asking for more than you expect is a typical negotiation approach.

My main point is that most of the responders here are selling Tejada way short. By the end of the season his power had returned. He is older, but still very, very valuable. I stanf by my predictions above.

Weaver is valuable, but not dominating. He gave up more hits than innings pitched last season. Wood is a minor leaguer. Huge potential, yes, but many scouts are alarmed at his long swing and tendency to strike out.

If I were the Orioles, yes, I would make this trade, because of the Orioles' needing to rebuild. And yes, it may be more than the Angels want to give up. But it's hardly ridiculous. Weaver and Wood are hardly guarantees. Tejada is proven. For next year, Tejada is worth more than Weaver and Wood--probably for 2009, as well.

These Orioles must be joking there is no way the
Angels are going to trade Weaver and Wood for Tejada he is not that valuable now because of his injury in his wrist. The Angels would only offer to get Miggy Cabrera right now or just forget about it and just wait till the All-Star Break cuz in my point of view the Angels are ready to start with or without Miguel Cabrera.
