Padres rumor guru Tom Krasovic has a new article up at the San Diego Union-Tribune.
- The Padres are open to trading 24 year-old catcher Nick Hundley. Hundley did not crack Baseball America's Padres top ten prospects for '08 after hitting .247/.324/.475 at Double A. Kevin Towers would've sent him to the Astros for Luke Scott, and still could send him to Pittsburgh for Xavier Nady.
- Krasovic says that if the Padres are to deal Michael Barrett for a few prospects, it's likely to happen soon. The Pirates are said to be interested so maybe a deal involving Nady and some prospects could go down.
- The Padres' offer to Geoff Jenkins will likely to be inferior to that of the Phillies. So Jenkins would have to be sold on the city. He's from California and went to USC, notes MLBTR reader Nathaniel S.
- The Friars expressed interest in another USC alum, Mark Prior (as have 11 other teams). The New York Daily News reiterated the Mets' and Yankees' interest in him this morning.
"Kevin Towers would've sent him to the Astros for Luke Scott"
WRONG!!
The Astros asked for him for Luke Scott and were denied.

Hopefully Prior signs with the Mets and helps them sink further into the abyss. This would be an exclamation point on Oscar Minaya's offseason of failure.

Horatio,
I disagree. I think Prior could work out very well for them. He is a cheap option, and if my a miracle he returns to form, they have their Ace that they have been looking for without giving up a single prospect. Granted, its obviously a longshot, but Prior is a high risk, high reward player. If they get that high reward, they are going to be thrilled they signed him. If not, oh well, 5 mil to the Mets is nothing.

Do Prior, his attitude and his ego all have to be signed to different contracts?

This certainly doesn't fit in, but looks like this site is a #2 seed! Show some love fellas.

Have I missed the rumors about the Mets being involved in the Bedard talks or have they not even happened? I hear all the "Mets are still in on Johan" stuff but if they're in need of a true ace then why not go for Bedard? A CY candidate for the next couple of years in a Mets uniform would be nice, might make the fans forget about the complete failure the Mets had at the end of the year.

Did I misinterpret this?
"The Astros gleaned that the Padres were willing to swap Double-A catcher Nick Hundley for corner outfielder Luke Scott, later dealt to the Orioles."
As someone who watched Prior over the years I haven't seen a hint of bad attitude or inflated ego. He's a boring quote, but that's about it.

The Mets just don't have the trade chips to end up with Bedard or Santana, especially when compared to the other teams who want them so badly.

You are both wrong about Prior. Prior had a huge attitude problem. Tim, you weren't looking hard enough. No offense, but when Prior was actually on the mound, this site wasn't up and running. The entire reason why the Cubs didn't just offer him $3.5M or so for this year was because of his attitude. He just didn't want to play for the team.
On the other hand, that first dude is a little off. Prior will be excited about playing for another team and proving himself. I don't see him bringing a distateful attitude to another ball club.

"No offense, but when Prior was actually on the mound, this site wasn't up and running."
Yeah, because I'm sure Tim just started watching baseball after the site came up, especially since he's a cubs fan...

GIAMBI = PAVANO. can't they just IR them both and collect insurance $? lol

I'm sure Tim pays much closer attention to baseball now that this site has become a huge part of his life. Based on reading Tim's bio, there's nothing to suggest he's been following baseball on more than a casual level for more than two-three years. In fact, it seems like Tim would have known more about Prior in 2003 if Prior was an excellent online poker player. There's nothing wrong with that. That doesn't mean Tim doesn't have good knowledge now, but it does explain how Tim could have looked over Prior's attitude being a fan, not a journalist/blogger.

I have always followed the Cubs very closely. Every newspaper article, a million books. Trust me I didn't overlook any information.
Prior does not and never had an attitude problem. The media portrayed him as such, and LOVED to paint him as a wuss. This is a guy trying to pitch through a tattered shoulder, he's a huge wuss. Please. Any idea that Prior has an attitude problem is pure media hype. The media simply dislikes guys who are bad quotes.

I did find this as a colorful quote from Prior.

Despite that sarcasm and disappointment with being sent to the minors...I still think he got a bad rap around Chicago. I believe fans often think they know a player's personality when they don't.

Thanks for that background Tim. When word came out of the Cubs trying to get Prior to sign an extension for an '09 club option, remembering that quote is what convinced me there is no way in hell he'd be doing Chicago any type of favors. However, it's a shame how juvenile message boards can be and that you'd have to defend yourself to a TrueCubsFan who hasn't given us anything to believe why his opinion as "a fan" back in '03 means anything more then yours.
By the way, Mark Prior as the #5 SP (with the potential to end the year as the #3) in his hometown at the pitcher's haven that is Petco Park makes too much sense. Maybe that's why the Astros are closing in on Rusch, Kevin Towers gave him a head's up that they're close with Prior and let Glendon walk away. Kevin made the same gentleman's move with Todd Greene when they signed Mike Piazza in '06. That's what I'm hoping for at least...

First, on Prior, a friend of mine grew up with him and says that most of the Chicago media's view of him is wrong. But what does it matter, since he's unlikely to ever be an effective pitcher again.
As for the trade possibilities, can I get a collective "what the hell" is with the Pirates' interest in Barrett? He makes Paulino look good defensively and offensively in comparison. Please, Pirates, if you have to make a trade, get a young catcher like Hundley (I'm biased in favor of him, being an Arizona grad) and deal from a surplus of outfielders (bye, Nady and your bad hamstring) so Steven Pearce and Nate McLouth can both start. Do not trade for Barrett!
