« Tim On WGN Radio Tonight | Main | Dan Haren Traded To Diamondbacks »
A small signing this evening, as the Padres inked 33 year-old southpaw Glendon Rusch to a minor-league deal. He missed the entire '07 season due to a blood clot.
Add this to the recent Shawn Estes signing, and I wonder whether the Padres are content with their depth for the fifth starter spot. They've also got Clay Hensley and Justin Germano on the roster to compete for that job. My guess is that this means the Padres won't pursue Mark Prior aggressively.

Hensley may be out for the year with shoulder problems, and the Padres arent convinced with Germano or former top prospect Tim Stauffer...Estes is hardly a sure bet, and Rusch's 2005 may have been a fluke.

having 5 below average pitchers all to fill out one spot in your rotation makes little sense
continuity is needed

Last I read Hensley is on track to be throwing as normal in January.

Didn't mention Stauffer nor call Estes or Rusch sure things. Am aware that Germano lost his rotation spot but he's certainly in the mix.
I don't expect the Pads to drop $3-4 mil to add more injury risk behind Wolf.

That's funny, I thought he was holding out for a Major-League deal.

Hey Tim--have the Padres been mentioned with Mike Mussina? That would be a great trade for the Pads and the Yanks (as a Yankee fan), if it works right.
