This is a great news for the Yankees, who gain some leverage in the Johan Santana negotiations.

Today is a good day =) Welcome back Andy.

Andy's a good guy. He saw the Yankees were struggling with this Johan stuff, so instead of drawing out his decision until February he decided to let them know ASAP.
They don't NEED Santana now... but that doesn't mean a whole lot.

I know it sounds insane, but is it possible for they to replace Hughes with Kennedy for the Santana trade talk? I just want the Santana deal to die out and let Hughes to pitch for us for years to come!

Give the man a medal. Well, actually, I think $16 million will do. In any case, wonderful news for the Yankees.
Posted by: Andrew | December 03, 2007 at 07:48 AM
yungwai, i hope that they do pull hughes back. if they can get santana without giving up hughes, i'd be overjoyed.

Thank god. If the yankees get johan they would top the AL east. It'll be Santanna, Wang, Pettite, Moose, and Chamberlin and Kennedy as their long man which the Yankees have needed greatly for the past years.
Posted by: yankfan1 | December 03, 2007 at 07:51 AM
we will still sell the farm for johan. id rather keep the young guys and pull someone off the scrap heap like a bartolo colon and hope to catch lightning in a bottle. just me though. something about trading away young talent doesnt do well for me. santana is do for TJ soon.
Posted by: krosch | December 03, 2007 at 07:53 AM
this is great news! now they should focus they're attention on acquiring a pitcher that will be cheaper than santana. Maybe Haren? although thats probably not a cheaper alternative..
Posted by: PinstripePride26 | December 03, 2007 at 07:55 AM
Krosch, they will most certainly not have to sell the farm. The system is now deep enough to absorb the loss of a couple of prospects, which is what Cashman has been building toward these last few years. As promising as Hughes is, he can be replaced. One thing the Yankee system doesn't have a dearth of is pitching.
Posted by: VladimirPut-in | December 03, 2007 at 08:01 AM
@zs190: I didn't see anything in the article indicating his desire to relieve pressure from the Yankees in their dealings for Santana. Pettite may be a good guy but let's not make assumptions about his intentions.
Posted by: theillien | December 03, 2007 at 08:08 AM
VladimirPut-in Umm did you mean the Yankee Farm doesnt have a dearth of Pitching or Does have a dearth of pitching...One thing they do lack is impact positional prospects ready to test the Majors in 08.
I think the question the Yankees have to now ask themselves regarding Santana is Whith Pettitte in the Fold Do they want to give Hughes and Kennedy in a deal for him. That may be the only way they beat out the Red Sox for his services.
Posted by: Jzzskins | December 03, 2007 at 08:08 AM
yeah vlad i know man, i just become enamored with prospects which is a downfall bc they are just that: prospects.
Posted by: krosch | December 03, 2007 at 08:09 AM
huh? I didn't say anything like that....
Posted by: zs190 | December 03, 2007 at 08:11 AM
I think this clearly will give the Yankees the deepest pitching they have seen since 77-78 if they get Santana. I like the young guys in the bullpen as well. Ohlendorf, Ramirez,Karstens, Rasner, Humberto Sanchez, Igawa, Wright, and Cox give the Yankees enough bullpen arms to find 4 quality guys. Let Kennedy start in Scranton and give Moose the shot he deserves.
Posted by: paineinflicted | December 03, 2007 at 08:12 AM
Moose doesn't deserve a shot. He was given one last year and only showed himself to be marginally valuable. His decline has indicated that he is well past his prime and doesn't have the late-career longevity that other top-tier pitchers do.
Posted by: theillien | December 03, 2007 at 08:17 AM
good for the yankees, this gives them so much leverage with Santana and the twins. now its a luxury to get Santana and not really a necessary course of action. im sure this deal has been in place for a few days if not a week, they just probably wanted to wait until today, i dont think its a coincidence they announced it on the day of the Santana deadline

I agree moose should go no where near a mound for the yanks in '08.

It sounds as though I have been in the minority but trading Cabrera has never been a priority for me. Watching either Damon or Matsui play CF is painful and neither has a quality arm. With Tabata and Jackson still 2-3 years away from contributing I'd like to see the Yankees now stand pat or propose Kennedy, Jackson and Horne for Haren. We don't need to trade away the farm for Santana and maybe signing a veteran to a 1 or 2 year deal makes more sense right now.
Posted by: ProjectMayhem | December 03, 2007 at 08:32 AM
thats fine trade moose and damon along with 20 mill to the braves, i am sure we have a spare part around yall could find some use for to call it even
Posted by: bravesbeast | December 03, 2007 at 08:33 AM
Anyone considering this. How about we back off on Santana and try a trade for Bedard? We may be able to move kennedy, cabrera, horne and another prospect. Then we would have a rotation of Bedard, Wang, Pettitte, Joba, Hughes and Moose. That is championship quality.

"How about we back off on Santana and try a trade for Bedard? We may be able to move kennedy, cabrera, horne and another prospect."
You're kidding, right? Bedard will cost MORE than Santana. He's got filthy stuff, he's younger and he's controlled cheaply for TWO years instead of one. The Orioles have already said they want four top young players, and most people think the O's will end up hanging onto him since the cost is prohibitive.
Posted by: metafrantic | December 03, 2007 at 08:53 AM
According to ESPN Bedard is 4 days younger then Santana
Posted by: CarlitoBrigante | December 03, 2007 at 09:12 AM
Okay, fine... I admit, I was wrong about the age. But Bedard is still going to cost more in prospects that Santana if he's traded at all.
Someone pointed out on some thread that Dan Haren is more valuable to small-market teams because not only is he good, he's controlled cheaply for 3 years. The same is true for Bedard; even if they can't resign him, they get 2 years of great pitching from Bedard while he's still in arbitration. Also, a short-term (2-year) commitment sounds a lot better to a lot of teams tahn the 6 or 7 years Santana would require.
Posted by: metafrantic | December 03, 2007 at 09:38 AM
Bedard and Kazmir are out of the question.
Why?
Because neither the Rays or the Orioles will trade their aces to a division rival. Not unless they fleece the farm.
Especially since Angelos hates the Yankees.
Haren's ERA jumps closer to 4 than it is to 3 when it's park adjusted.
It's Santana or bust, unless Cashman pulls something out of thin air for Sheets or some other random pitcher.
As long as they don't give up 2 of the big 3, they're ok.
More high ceiling power arms are coming :D: Kontos, McAllister, Betances to name some.

I'm glad Pettitte is going to pitch another year. Of course, I'm disappointed he isn't in an Astros uniform, but at least this way he can finish his career with the chance of winning another World Series. He grew up and lives in the Houston area, but I think he's better suited as a Yankee. He thrives under that pressure, I hope he dominates next season.

I'm still confused can the Yankees sign Vizcaino?
They already have signed 3 type A's so are their hands tied or is there an exception for resigning your own players. And if they can sign him why havent they?
