« Rosenthal's Latest: Prior, Bedard, Haren | Main | Sports Tech Now Interview »
UPDATE, 12-19-07 at 11:14am: Todd Zolecki says there's nothing to the report that the Phils made a four-year offer to Lohse. So, Zolecki and Davidoff do not agree with Tim Brown.
UPDATE, 12-19-07 at 9:24am: Ken Davidoff wrote this morning that the Mets "do not seem particularly interested" in Lohse, Carlos Silva, or Livan Hernandez at the current prices.
FROM 12-17-07 at 1:58pm:
Yahoo's Tim Brown indicates that the Mets and Phillies both have offers out to free agent starter Kyle Lohse, though it's not the lead of his story (hat tip to MetsBlog).
There hasn't been a ton of buzz around Lohse yet. It seems that other aspects of the pitching market may have to settle first. Lohse could be a Plan B for the Mariners. He could be an option for St. Louis as well. It's been said that Scott Boras, Lohse's agent, may try to get five years for him. As Jerry Crasnick says, Boras is "willing to wait for teams to get desperate." You can check out Boras' spin on Lohse here.

I hope Gillick finally came to his senses. While Lohse isn't the best pitcher around, he's certainly a better option than guys like Kris Benson.

Agreed tolo. Watching Lohse after he got to Philly, he was much better then I thought. He could be a nice number 4 in Shea for one year I think.

i think Loshe would be better suited for the bigger park at Shea, and Silva's goundeball better in Philly

Hell, after seeeing him in Philly, I wouldn't want him for 4 years. Compared to what's out there, he's not that bad, but he's league average.
Posted by: Bedrosian's Beard | December 17, 2007 at 02:33 PM
True, I dont want him for 4 years either. If it was at all possible for 2 years though, I woudlnt mind. Youre right though, if it came to 4 years I would rather just throw the ball to Pelfrey or Humber and say go out there every 5th day and compete and learn.
Posted by: nrmax88 | December 17, 2007 at 02:41 PM
Agreed on the 2 vs. 4 year thing. I'm a Phils fan. Lohse is decent, but if you can get 5-6 innings from one of those young guys, i'd say go for it, or go after a top of the rotation guy. Lohse/Silva are so bland.
Posted by: Bedrosian's Beard | December 17, 2007 at 02:43 PM
Silva's got a rep as a groundball guy, but he doesn't produce them at a rate to be really effective like that. I suppose he might be better suited for Philly than Lohse, though. Either way, the pitching market is pretty bland. Good luck, Mets and Phils.

Lohse is getting 3-21 at the absolute minimum, likely more. So while I'd like him for 2 as well, it's not gonna happen...

Will Pelfrey have one offspeed pitch this season that is even average? His fastball has sick movement and velo, but that "slider" was poor, not to mention that developing changeup. He could be a future closer in my eyes

This has been out since Sat. MLBtraderumors.com. is a little late, its been on every philadephia message board.
Yahoo had this on sat.

610 WIP and ESPN Radio report that the Phillies could be close to a deal with Seattle. Should this be any surprise since the Phils GM is Gillick? The Phils are willing to take on a large portion of Adrian Beltre's contract. The deal would presumably send Adam Eaton along with Pitching Prospect Carlos Carrasco over to the Mariners for Beltre and Horacio Ramirez. Who knows how official or close this is because other reports have the Phillies also close to acquiring guys like Javier Vasquez, Mike MacDougal, and Joe Crede from the White Sox
Posted by: Phillies Bitch | December 17, 2007 at 06:40 PM
That would be a terrible deal for Seattle, its probably legit.

Wayne, Pelfreys slider is getting better. He didnt even throw a slider till around this time last year, when he scratched his curveball for the slider. It is getting much better, but completely inconsistent. His problem is location, he has so much movement and velocity on his fastball if he can just get it near the plate he would be tough to hit. I wouldnt mind throwing him into the bullpen for atleast 2007 though, seeing the price for middle relief guys like Linebrink.

@Phillies Bitch
How valid are those rumors? I pretty much take everything WIP says with a grain of salt.
I like both deals, but depending on what we'd have to give up, I'd prefer the White Sox deal simply because of the addition of Vazquez.
Posted by: tolo316 | December 17, 2007 at 07:55 PM
If I were a Mariner fan I wouldn't be too happy about getting Vazquez, Crede and MacDougal, simply because it'd likely cost either Jones or Morrow, along with other prospects. And I don't think too many people in Seattle would get too happy about dealing Adam Jones
Posted by: scribbletone | December 17, 2007 at 09:03 PM
That rumor sounds bogus...Carrasco is the Phils' #1 pitching prospect. He could be ready for 2009.
Ramirez may be have been one of the few pitchers in the game worse than Adam Eaton, so that's basically a wash. Beltre is basically a salary dump for the Mariners. I would hope that trade doesn't happen
Posted by: wayne gomes | December 18, 2007 at 12:22 PM
Kyle Lohse isn't LEFT HANDED! When will he stop getting opportunities? I rather have Pelfrey/Humber keep getting called up and down to work on mechanics that that disaster.
Posted by: TheWrightStuff | December 18, 2007 at 06:08 PM
Wright, I watched all his starts after the trade and Lohse wasn't half bad for the Phils last year. Before Kaz Matsui that is (f'in ridiculous). He can help either club, but he'll probably get a 4 year deal instead of the 1-2 he deserves
Posted by: wayne gomes | December 19, 2007 at 08:54 AM
I agree Wayne, Lohse was at the very least servicable as a Philly. I would definitely take him over Pelf or Humber for 1 or 2 years, but like you said, he will probably get 4 years and that us too much.
