Pirates Rumors: Bay, Morris, McLouth, Nady

Dejan Kovacevic and John Perrotto have the latest on the plans of Neal Huntington's Pirates.

  • Both beat writers are saying not to expect Jason Bay to be traded at the Meetings.  It would be a sell-low move with bad PR.
  • Both also agree that Matt Morris staying put.  Kovacevic spins it as if the Pirates should actually want to keep Morris, while Perrotto's sources suggest the Bucs would have to eat more than 70% of Morris' contract to ditch him.
  • Kovacevic also suggests that the Pirates need Jack Wilson, and that's why he won't be going anywhere.
  • Relievers Salomon Torres, Damaso Marte, and John Grabow are available and drawing some interest.  Marte in particular interests the Yankees.
  • Chris Duffy can be had; the Braves and Marlins have previously expressed interest.  Maybe they'll renew that with center field vacancies and a new Pirates GM.  Duffy will start in Triple A if he's not dealt.
  • The Pirates are still talking to Shawn Chacon about returning.
  • Perrotto notes that interest in center fielder Nate McLouth is picking up, with the Padres and Marlins interested.
  • Xavier Nady won't be non-tendered, contrary to previous reports.

Morris makes 9.5 Mil this year. Why would they need to take 70% of that to dump him?

Someone would gladly take Morris for 1 year, 6.5 Mil.

I have no idea where Perrotto's 70% figure comes from.

I think the White Sox need to get this done. Bay would fit perfectly in LF. The Sox should agree to take Morris and pay most of his salary in order to decrease the amount of talent it will take to land Bay.

The Sox can figure out later what to do with Morris. At worst, he's a 50/50 shot to do better than Gavin Floyd anyway.

Not a bad call from Andrew.

If they are going to move Bay they need to dump Morris' salary. I don't think the Sox have the right pieces for a Cabrera type deal. A lesser deal for Bay and Morris could be put together.

I just really do not see the braves having much interest in chris duffy, as they already have made a move for a similar player in josh anderson. However, I can definitely see duffy being part of a deal that would also include marte or grabow, as the braves have definitely made it known they are looking for a lefty reliever. If that were the case, the braves and pirates could definitely have something to talk about. I will admit, while we may not have that much interest, it would not be the end of the world to acquire duffy.

Too bad about not wanting to move Bay. I was hoping that the Tribe would pony up for him.

Duffy to ATL for Lillibridge? Rumor was the Braves preferred Duffy over him in the LaRoche trade. Littlefield thought Duffy was the end all be all. The Pirates need a middle infielder (utility) and this would allow them to move Wilson if a reasonable deal would come about. Lillibridge could be the leadoff hitter the Buccos have needed for years. I hope the Pirates are very active and turn over the roster. I hope they pursue trading Snell. He would bring them the best package of ML ready talent. I am surprised with Huntington's patience. I thought he would make a splash by now. Littlefield would have already traded Bay for 3 AA relievers by now.
