Rangers Rumors: Blalock, Lamb, Padilla

Evan Grant has the latest Rangers hot stove buzz.

  • 27 year-old third baseman Hank Blalock is getting a lot of play.  Grant names the Cardinals, Phillies, Twins, and Dodgers as teams that have inquired.  Jon Daniels says no team has made an impressive offer and he's not inclined to trade Blalock.  It would be a bit of a sell-low move.
  • The Rangers met with Mike Lamb's agent yesterday afternoon; they're the frontrunners for him.  They have a full-time first base job for Lamb, who came up in the organization.
  • Teams are interested in Vicente Padilla, but everyone wants the Johan thing to be finished before moving on pitching.

If the Rangers trade Blaylock they likely won't have a player hit 20 HR for them this season. Pitching remains a wasteland (today). Just when you think this sorry franchise can't be any worse...

The future at least looks a little better. Holding on to the prospects is good, and a drastic change from past management strategies. Would like to see Daniels follow the lead of Bowden though, who is having a very good week IMO.

As for Mike Lamb on a one year deal - what's the point? The team already has Catalanotto.

This team should be making minor trades (since major ones don't seem to be working out for them) to continue to position themselves for 2010, when they might actually be close enough to compete in the division. They should also be freeing up a roster spot for the Rule 5 draft - why is the roster full on a team as bad as this one?

Stork, i think Salty could hit 20+ hrs this year for you guys, but 2010 seems to be a realistic outlook

Catalanotto's a little bit cheaper, too.

Eh, no need to trade Blalock right now. It'd be selling at an absolute low, and he hit extremely well last season when he did play...Let him come back this season and sell him off at the deadline if he can bring a solid haul...

Am I the only Rangers fan that kind of wants to keep Padilla around? He's crazy, but he didn't pitch well last year, and you've gotta think if you move him now it'll be nothing more than a bad contract swap or selling him for really nothing...If anything, you hope him and Millwood can rebound early this year and you can get a good return on one or both of them.

Don't see the point in Lamb, but I guess if it's a short-term stop gap, no big deal.

2008 is going to suck. This team is going to take some serious lumps. But, as long as they stay strong on the rebuilding model, and allow their young talent to develop and progress through the system, I'll be fine with it...

I also favor the Rangers keeping Padilla (though we would be in the minority on this one), unless value is received. Noone was calling for his head in 2006 when he won I think 15 games and pitched 200 innings. Not that the guy is an ace by any stretch, but the guy has tons more upside than any salary-dump I have seen rumored to be offered for him. The team needs some guys who can eat up some innings - only Padilla and Millwood are capable of pitching over 150 innings for the team next year.

If you trade him, send him to the NL where he can no longer throw at people without fear of retaliation. The Mets seem to be itching to overpay for a pitcher, why not Padilla?

I will also start referring to the Rangers' search for a first baseman by its technical term - dumpster diving.

Blalock would be a sensible target for the Phils, upside play, true 3B. What is his contract situation?

With Iguchi recently saying he'd be open to 3B, I'd hope the Phils would be back in for him. He was an excellent piece down the stretch
