Reds Rumors: Bedard, Prior

A break from your regularly scheduled steroid talk.  John Fay checks in on the Reds' pursuit of starting pitching.

  • Fay says the Reds are still hopeful about getting Erik Bedard, and puts their chances at 50/50.  The Orioles still want Jay Bruce, and the Reds are still resisting.
  • Fay notes Dusty Baker told folks at the Meetings that he'd like to have Mark Prior.  Whether Prior would like to be under his watch again is the question.  As a 22 year-old in 2003, Prior ranked third in baseball in Pitcher Abuse Points per start.

This just in. Mark Prior was re-injured when he was placed on the Non-Tendered List.

if the reds want bedard bad enough, they will give up bruce

thats exactly the point Donny...they dont want him that bad....Bedard alone isnt going to win them the championship..and theyre not gonna trade their best prospect in the last 25 years (in addition to a number of other prospects that are in the top 50 in baseball), however he gets them a lot closer and they will give up A LOT to get him...just not Bruce...Bruce is ranked the best prospect in all of baseball in the top 50 List on Minorleaguebaseball.com ...the other names being thrown around on the list in the top 50 (Bailey, Cueto, Votto) plus theres obvious value in EE and Hamilton....I don't see Dunn going there, but could see him going in an Oakland trade

Finally, somebody with some sense. All I've been hearing comes from Cubs fans who think that they can get Bedard for Cedeno and Marshall.

Am I alone in questioning Bedard's health? He's never pitched 200 innings, he got hurt this year and in 2005. He always had good strikeout totals, but 2007 was well above any totals he had in the past. He relies on his curve as his out pitch, so will his elbow hold up?

If I were the Orioles I would take the Red's offer as it is right now. Bedard's stock can't get much higher. They won't compete for a couple of years. He said that he doesn't want to sign an extension. Get something out of him before his stock drops or you lose him to free agency. You can't get much better than the prospects the Reds are offering.

True about Bedard. He also had a better HR/9 rate than Santana in a division that hit 96 more home runs, a better K/9, and a better DIPS ERA, while Santana's numbers seem to be trending down albeit slightly. Is Bedard trending up? Either one of these guys in the NL with the pitcher batting and in the NL central especially which seems to have some SO heavy teams, would be absolutely phenomenal.

That is, is Bedard trending up and will have one or two or more similar years or was last season an aberration? I think he's on the upswing for a couple years and coming to the NL central all but ensures that.

I don't think that throwing 40 more Ks than you pitch innings is an aberration. But how much better can you get? He could bring the same prospects as Santana right now I think. There is so much potential for him to get hurt, why wait? He has never pitched 200 innings and he rates 25th in pitcher abuse points. It isn't like the O's have a chance of competing. Not even before his contract comes up. All in all, the O's probably won't keep him around anyway, why do they insist on keeping him for a non-competitive year?

Take it easy on Cub fans. I believe what has been thrown around actually includes Felix Pie in that package with Cedeno and Marshall.

My mistake. You are completely right cubbyrick. If Pie goes though, who will play center? Maybe trade Randal Simon for Carlos Beltran?

I'm just joking. But it seriously seems like those are the sort of ludicrous ideas being thrown about while people are entirely serious about them. I'd love to see Scott Kazmir as a Brave by trading Brent Lillibridge or Gorkeys Hernendez, but I don't seriously believe it will happen. I shouldn't stereotype, but it almost always seems like a Cub fan. Go Braves. Go Cubs. Mets suck.

Hey, the reds should not even consider trading Bruce or Baily. Those guys have 5 to 6 years of service time and Bedard is a free agent after 09. Be patient with these guys and you will be rewarded. You are in a division with a team like the cubs, who try to buy there way through everything, but still can't win a series if their lives depend on it.

I'm gonna guess that cubs=nothing is a White Sox fan, and you're really not in a position to bash the Chicago Cubs. Regardless of how many World Series they have won, they are a far superior team than the one on the south side. The Cubs are in a far better position than the Sox, and have superior young talent in the minors with Vitters and Colvin. The Cubs should probably be considered the favorite of their division at this point, while the White Sox being in last place wouldn't shock anybody.

And actually the White Sox had a higher payroll in 2007, by the way.

And in Baltimore's case, they should jump on this oppurtunity to move Bedard for a bunch of quality talent while they have the oppurtunity. It isnt like they'll win next year, if they keep Bedard they'll win 70 instead of 65. Yay. Moving him now, at what is most likely the height of his value, would definately be the smart move for the Orioles. Dealing away Miggy, Bedard and Roberts would add to that team a ton of top young talent that they could build around, as well as Nick Markakis and Matt Wieters and maybe Bill Rowell. If the Orioles could get a Homer Bailey, Edwin Encarnacion, Josh Hamilton package for Bedard, then move Brian Roberts to Chicago for Sean Gallagher, Ronny Cedeno, Eric Patterson and Matt Murton, then they should jump on the oppurtunity to add a lot of good talent. They would probably be pissed that none of those guys are really sure fire elite guys, but those guys pretty much don't get dealt anymore, unless the package is Cabrera/Willis. They could at least challenge the Rays. Sorta.
C Hernandez
1B Millar
2B Patterson
3B Encarnacion
SS Cedeno
LF Murton/Huff
CF Hamilton
RF Markakis
DH Mora/Huff

Rotation: Cabrera, Guthrie, Bailey, Gallagher, Patton, with Albers and Loewen getting some starts as well.

They would be cheap as well, and have a lot of decent talent. They might be able to do better for Roberts, but then again he was in the Mitchell Report, so that doesnt help his value.

Why is it that you ignorant, sad, pathetic no good cubs fans have to always bring the White Sox up in an argument that has nothing to do with the Sox? I am talking about the reds trade proposal with the orioles you WACKJOB. None of those teams in that division can compete with the cubs national league high payroll. Not now, Not ever. So they need to hold onto their young talent so it could they could atleast have a chance? That would be the smart thing to do. The Whtie Sox payroll was higher in 07 because of resigning their own players. They have never gone out and spent 100 million on an offseason, let alone 300 million. Also, in a far superior division like the AL central, we have another big market team like the tigers, a team with superior scouting in the indians, and a team that is always re shuffling and competing like the twins. Not to mention Bigger market teams that stand in the way of a hopefull wild card spot like the yankees, red sox, and angels. You wanna talk trash, I wish the WHITE SOX, and the cubs can switch spots and the cubs come to the AL, and then see what happens, because you would not like that one bit.

A good pitching coach will change Bedards reliance on the Curveball. Cole Hamels was the same way his first season(relying on the curve), and they convinced him to focus more on his changeup.

Injury Risk? Probably. Name me a young lefty starter who isn't these days.

Man, you're kind of a dickhead. You were also talking about how the Cubs are a bunch of free spending morons incapable of winning. You cheap shot the Cubs, I cheap shot the White Sox. I wasn't stating any biases, I was stating the truth. The Cubs are in a far better position than the White Sox. The Cubs are far more likely to make the playoffs next year than the White Sox. Who cares about anything else. It just comes down to winning. If it was the other way around I would have no problem with it. The Tigers and Indians could beat the crap out of the Cubs, but they play in the AL, so that doesnt matter.

And whats the difference between resigning players and signing free agents, spending money is spending money regardless.

Also, payrolls for the teams in the NL Central:
Cubs- $99M
Cardinals- $90M
Astros- $88M
Brewers- $71M
Reds- $69M
Pirates- $39M

True, the Pirates, Brewers and Reds probably don't stand a chance of spending money like Chicago does, but the Cardinals and the Astros have had similar payrolls to those the Cubs for years. The Cubs haven't been outspending either one of those teams by a very large margin.

And both the Mets ($115M) and Dodgers ($108M) both had higher payrolls than the Cubs. The Cubs was the third highest, not the first.

And yeah, the Cubs would blow in the AL. I just could care less because they play in the AL.

scribbletone

The cubs play in the NL. Their payroll is climbing after that fukudome signing higher than 99m. You were taking a shot at the Sox by saying they were a last place team, but the cubs would be a last place team in our situation as well. And you are acting like the Sox don't have a chance? Well last I checked championships are not won on paper, so I hope you eat those words come october.

You could say the same about Houston's payroll after adding Tejada and Matsui, or the Reds after adding Cordero, or the Brewers after adding Gagne. And although it is true that championships aren't won on paper, paper will tell you quite a bit about teams' odds. The White Sox will not win the World Series. Neither will the Cubs. Yeah, each team has a chance, but so do the Marlins.. Every team has a chance theoretically, but in reality you and I both know thats not true. I'm not even arguing with you here, its not like I'm saying the Cubs will win it either. Neither team will. They don't have the pitching depth in their rotations or the depth in their batting orders to compete with the Red Sox or the Angels. You gotta be realistic, there are only a small handful of teams that could win it all.

Only a handful of teams that could win it all?

And the '06 Cardinals were in that handful?

"Rotation: Cabrera, Guthrie, Bailey, Gallagher, Patton, with Albers and Loewen getting some starts as well."

I couldn't help but laugh at this. What has Daniel Cabrera done to be automatically given a rotation spot? All he's done over the last three seasons is get worse and before you throw Randy Johnson comparisons around, RJ only had three seasons when he had an ERA over four and Cabrera already has four in four seasons including two with ERA's over five. It's time to give up the project and if DC is in the rotation in 2008, it's because he EARNED it, not because it was just given to him. Trembley won't be giving out any free passes anymore.

What is more amusing is that you say Loewen can have some starts as well. Loewen pitched well enough to be 5-0 with a broken elbow and had a 3.56 ERA I believe and you think he's only worthy of spot starts? Loewen is far superior to DC and will eventually become our next Bedard in Baltimore. He too will have to earn a rotation spot, but that should be no problem at all. There will be a lot of guys competing for rotation spots and I doubt very seriously that DC will be one of those five unless Kranitz works a miracle. Face it, Cabrera sucks. There is no two ways about it, he sucks. It's amusing that you would, again, just hand him a rotation spot. He doesn't deserve it and he's had every chance to run away with a spot in his time here and hasn't done it.

Please, for the sake of my keeper fantasy team, don;t let Prior sign with Baker

Yeah, wouldnt want anything to happen to the fantasy monster of the last 3 years that is Mark Prior. If you are relying on Mark Prior to help your fantasy team, then you could be in big time trouble.

I hope Prior signs with the Reds. Then watch him cry about how the Reds messed him up. I think Mark's dad would flip the f*ck out. PS The White Sox do suck, and its williams fault he doesnt know how to run a team. The guy is crazy arrogant and thinks he owns the team. Just becuz the Cubs sign an expensive proven free agent(which by the way the sox tried to sign for more money), CUBS=NOTHING, You're gonna cry about it. I'm no GM by any means, but I coulda swore you were supposed to try and put the best team on the field you can afford. I suppose were supposed to let a bunchof the homeless play for bologna sandwiches and dime bags of smack? Come on dude. Every time I see this freakin kid on here he's crying about the Cubs. Dude they havent won it all in a hundred years, they should be cut crazy slack for trying to do what they do. Thats why we all play, you knucklehead! Damn, shut your dickhole! Every time you talk you spit jizz all over the place. Not to mention, youre so obviously green with eny that you look like the freakin HULK! CUBS=NOTHING SMASH! RELAX!

*envy...damn i hate typos in the middle of a rant

I dont know if this will get replied to since its so late in the post...but dont get me wrong...I believe the time is now for the reds to compete (even if its not enough) because in a couple years...when these prospects are ready, both Harang and Bronson will be past their prime.....so i def. think a trade needs to be made, i just dont want to trade too much

First of all, it was just speculation that the Sox had offered more money, but we all know that wasn't the case. He also wanted to play RF, which is occupied by Dye. I am not crying about the cubs, I am just sick of being let down time after time. DUDE, you make no sense, SHUT YOUR DICKHOLE AND WHATEVER THE HELL ELSE YOU SAID. It sounds like you are from ADDISON AND HALSTAD if you know what I mean.
