Let's do a recap on the Mark Prior Derby, which is getting more confusing each day. Jerry Crasnick has added some good info this afternoon. Prior wants a one-year deal and hopes to be on a big league mound before the end of May.
- Yankees - They'll probably pass, per Hank Steinbrenner.
- Red Sox - Named only by Jayson Stark.
- White Sox - Named only by Stark.
- Mariners - Named by Stark, denied by Jim Street.
- Mets - Named by Stark, Crasnick, Ken Rosenthal, Ed Price
- Cardinals - Named by Stark, Crasnick, Rosenthal, Matthew Leach
- Padres - Named by many, made an offer according to Crasnick. Prior went to USC but would have to take less money to play in San Diego
- Astros - Named by many, made an offer according to Alyson Footer
- Giants - Named only by Stark
- Reds - Named by Stark, Crasnick. Prior previously played under Dusty Baker
- Nationals - Named by Stark, Crasnick, Bill Ladson
- Rangers - Named by Crasnick but not Stark, aggressively pursuing according to Rosenthal
- Marlins - Named only by Crasnick
- Indians - Named only by Crasnick
One more and we're at half of all baseball teams linked at some point. The Phillies and Pirates are not interested, and it's probably safe to count the Cubs out.

I can't wait to see Prior become the most dominant #5 pitcher in baseball come May at Petco...
Peavy, Young, Maddux, Wolf, Prior could be nasty...

I think he'll most likely sign on with a team that's not expected to contend this year, so that he can basically re-hab and look really good on a team that otherwise is expected to look really bad.
Or better yet, a team that's really close to contending but not quite there...
If I'm right in my guess, I'd say the Nationals, Rangers, Cardinals, or Astros. I think He'll avoid Dusty Baker and his Reds - nto good for his arm most likely.
Of those four, my money's on the Cardinals getting him - if they're really interested, that is.
Have to admit, I'm really hesitant about discounting the Friars for some reason (doesn't fit in with my logic above - they're going to be strong contenders, and I would question how much playing time Prior would get on their staff/how good he could possibly look coming off of injury when compared to the likes of Peavy).

I think all of these stories are a great indication that Prior's agent is doing an outstanding job of spreading B.S.

Giants have no need for Prior unless he can play 3B!!

Since this a rumors site, I heard from my sisters neighbors hair dresser that he is going to go to Japan and pitch for the Hiroshima Toyo Carps.
For someone who supposidly had the "perfect" throwing motion he sure did have some issues.

Lackey, Escobar, Weaver, Garland and Prior?

The rumors of him going to Cincy are ugly. I know Dusty is "a player's manager", but it should be corrected that he's more of a "position player's manager" as he ruined not only Wood and Prior, but many other promising pitchers with the Cubs and Giants. I have no idea why Prior would want to get reunited with the guy that destroyed him.

Gee, what could possibly be causing a 26 year old guy with perfect mechanics to constantly come up with injuries. Could it be ......

I maintain my stance that the Cubs are the favorite to re-sign him. I believe that whens he sees what the offers from around the league are like, he'll know how fair the Cubs were being with him. It might take some crow eating for him to come back, but I think it's a good possibility. I will admit that Prior eating crow does sound like a long shot, but I do believe the Cubs made a fair offer based on market value and I don't think anyone is going to overpay for a one year high risk contract.

Dave, Even if it means taking less money, PRIOR DOES NOT WANT TO BE HERE.

I am blaming Prior's problems on one thing, and fortunatly its gone. This was the same cancer who didnt go out and calm Prior down after the Bartman issue in game 6. Prior was visibly upset by this and Baker or Rothchild should have gone out there and calmed him down.
I hope Prior does eat some crow and end back with the Cubs. People talk about him going to a contender.. shoot Rice University team could contend in the NL Middle so.. Ok sorry about that. But when I look what he had in 2003 and his age I would like to see him back.
Stuipid Twins for not taking him and letting us get Maurer, and doing this to my ulcer. :-)

It seems to me like Jayson Stark is always throwing teams and names around. He seems to name anybody under the sun who is even a remote possibility, whether the teams have intrest or not. Who is gonna' call him on it though?

I can see his contract now: 1 year/1.5M + unlimited number of tampons

"but I do believe the Cubs made a fair offer based on market value and I don't think anyone is going to overpay for a one year high risk contract."
What was the Cubs offer? Besides, didn’t he say he pretty much say he wanted nothing to do with that club anymore? I think that would mean they would never really be able to provide a fair offer because “fair” would have to make up for the lack of desire ~ ie be something like twice as much money then what he will get elseware…
One year actually isnt a high-risk contract though ~ no matter what. I mean, I think we are talking something less than 5M max here, right? That being the case then the worst possible scenario is you took a chance and got very little for your 5M or less cash. Best case is he is a true-ace and you saved something like 10-20M. Somewhere in between you have LgAvg and you paid 5M less for it than a guy like Silva. Cant really go wrong no matter how you flip it…
If the contract is cheap enough, I cant imagine a single team wouldn’t want to take a chance on him ~ its better than offering a 4YR deal to a guy like Linebrink who you hope produces for 1-2…

I like bignatsfan idea that this is basically a rehab year and that he will sign with a non-contender. So, I'd like to add the Mets and Marlins as solid possibilities.

As a Cubs fan I would love to see him head back there and rejuvenate his career but I really doubt that will happen. I will actually be surprised if he does not end up in San Diego. As some have pointed already this pretty much going to be a rehab year and why wouldn't he want to rehab closer to home. I know they are offering less money but it wouldn't be the first time a player take less to go closer to his home.

ha...what do you know
Hankenstein talks publicly about the Yankees possible transactions. I'm so surprised.
