It's well-known the Yankees want to improve their bullpen. There's been talk of converting young minor league starters into relief for 2008. Otherwise, who's on the radar?
- A reliever could be acquired for Hideki Matsui - Tyler Kepner suggests Jonathan Sanchez or Kevin Correia. Brad Hennessey is another possibility.
- Kepner says the Yanks checked in on LaTroy Hawkins, Ron Mahay, and Trever Miller but haven't made offers. However, Mark Feinsand says the Yanks are talking to Hawkins about a one-year deal worth between $3.25-3.5MM.
- Luis Vizcaino is probably out of the picture. George King adds Jeremy Affeldt to the list of free agents the Yanks are checking out.
- Peter Abraham says the Yanks are competing with the Royals for Mahay and that it might take three years, $9MM. Pete Caldera recently said Mahay wants three years and $12MM though. Bob Dutton notes that it's Mahay's agents pushing the Royals; they have little interest.
- Rob Biertempfel says the Yankees and Astros have interest in acquiring Damaso Marte from the Bucs. George King says John Grabow interests the Yanks as well.

With all the talk of needing a lefty I am surprised H Matsui has not been linked to the Cubs. What about Howry for Matsui? Do the cubs have enough depth in the bullpen to cover that?

Don't think the Cubs would move Howry but I think Michael Wuertz would be desirable if included with another prospect. The Cubs have stockpiled bullpen arms and I think Wuertz does have value.

The Cubs have a lefty OF. Murton is better than anyone gives him credit for and won't cost them their best(probably) reliever.
I don't think there's enough depth with Dempster moving to the rotation, no.

i was thinking the same thing, except with michael wuertz instead of howry. wuertz is still under club control through 2011. the yankees would be happy to shed 13 million dollars off payroll and put damon in left, cabrera in center, and use giambi as full time DH. then next year they lose 32 million in pettite/abreu and have big bucks for santana (if hes not traded). wuertz is extremely underrated and him and marmol combined to be #1/2 in baseball in inherited runners stranded. he always has a sub 4 era and K's over 1 per inning.

I think the Cubs have the talent to cover Howry. The experience, no. I have not seen one link or heard one talk show even mention that one. I think the Giants are calling you guys.

Matsui is such a good player. IF we do end up trading him, I hope we get something of value in return because we essentially don't have to trade him. Correia and Hennessey seem good, I don't know about Sanchez, I was reading a different blog and they compared him to Farnsworth....with control that is...and we all know how much of a pain that is! I just hope we get something good back.

The Padres had interest in Igawa a couple months ago. Wonder if they would give up someone like Meredith to get him now.

If the yanks could move Igawa for a good reliever that'd be great. He not only bombed at the ml level but at AAA also.
I'd take Meredith even if he was a red sox (threw up in my mouth)

I think Sanchez has more upside and more risk than Hennessey or Correia. Sanchez has electric stuff but has been shaky with his control. Still young power lefties are valuable. Hennessey can be either a solid back end of the rotation starter or a solid setup man. He and Correia are more likely to be helpful but won't get much better.
While I'm against trading Cain or Lincecum and have no illusions that the Giants will compete over the next two years, I'm OK with getting Matsui. We are going to need someone to provide offense and draw fans to the park next year.
I think the Giants' best option would be to resign Bonds for a year and convert Matsui to 1B. We had a brutal offense last year with Bonds, and I'm scared at our impending futility without him, even if we get Matsui or another decent bat. Not that we'd compete with these two, but we'd be able to put 4 runs on the board every once in a while. I worry about the psyche of Caincicum if they keep losing 2-1 and 3-2 games for years.

If I were the Yankees, I'd ask for two of the following: Lowry, Sanchez, Correia, Hennessey and a decent prospect. Out of those guys Sanchez would be my first choice, as he would give them a young power lefty with great stuff. His walk problem would be much easier to hide in the bullpen, where strikeouts are very important. Most relievers have lousy K/BB ratios anyway.

Be more realistic, the only way the Cubs get Matsui for Michael Wuertz is if that prospect is Sean Marshall or something. Wuertz is a good reliever but he's not as valuable as Matsui. Maybe something like Wuertz and Ronny Cedeno. I also get the vibe that the Cubs would prefer to trade for someone younger, Matsui is gettin up there in age, somethin like 37 now

Matsui is 33, will turn 34 next June.

Just a thought, but would the Yankees have any interest in taking Dave Roberts off the Giants' hands? His salary would just be a drop in the pond for them and he could either be a good pinch runner/fourth outfielder or play CF if Melky is traded. He'd be a decent 9th place hitter if forced to start.
I was just wondering whether we could trade two of the four pitchers mentioned by JD plus Roberts for Matsui. I'd be more willing to give up Sanchez as part of the deal if we could also shed Roberts' contract.
Yankee fans?

I don't know but I really like Matsui. But seriously pitching is 20 times more important than hitting and if te Yankees could trade Matsui for 1 or 2 good relievers I think it's all good.

Sure, if it only costs money, we'll take Roberts off your hands. Good bench player in the least, decent starter at best. Personally I think it would be stupid for the Yankees to not get Sanchez in the deal somehow. They need left-handers very badly, especially ones that are younger.

The Giants might be the only team Matsui would even waive anyway.
