Brad Wilkerson Signs With Mariners

The Mariners officially signed Brad Wilkerson today to a one-year deal.  Scott Boras says he's a good fit even if the Ms don't trade Adam Jones.  Now that I think about it and see the price - $3MM - I might agree with that.  The Seattle Times' Larry Stone considers this signing a "possible precursor to finalization" of a Jones trade.  So maybe progress has been made on the Erik Bedard front.

Wilkerson, 29, hit .234/.319/.467 for the Rangers in '07, earning $4.35MM.  Wilkerson had some interesting years from 2002-04, putting up OPSs above .840.  Wrist and shoulder injuries seemingly had a lot to do with his struggles thereafter.

If he was willing to take a bench role, I would have liked the cubs to sign him for insurance if Pie still struggles at that the plate....bummer.

ZzZzzzzZzzz...

Huh, what? Wilkerson??

ZzZzzzzzzzz

I like this signing from a potential standpoint. If he stays healthy and regains his form it's a steal. If he doesn't, well, he's still better than Sexson at 4 times the salary.

It's only fitting that someone with the name "zito" would think that this signing was boring.
The guy can flat out hit. Hell, he's got some Expos/Nats records. I hope that he gets some playing time (meaning the Bedard trade goes through).
He's a steal at $3MM

My name is not Zito...

It is merely a computer log in.

Don't take your life so seriously.

A 31 year old platoon player is not exciting.

Wilkerson probably won't make too much of a difference. Will he put up numbers like Jose Guillen did last year? I doubt that. I got a link (http://tbcmariners.blogspot.com/2008/01/wilkerson-officially-signs.html) over at my blog for LookoutLanding's review. Great read.

This guy has dropped a long way from where he was.

TMACNTN, Oh you stupid little boy, you f#cked with the wrong bull. You see I was away living life when i came back to see you runnin your mouth on everything. The fact that you are responding to any and every post up here on the boards says it all. Go hit up your parents for them ten stacks, cuz I got a bet sayin that you've never been with a girl. Let alone a hot one! You are my favorite kind of internet dweller, the one who hides behind that keyboard in the vast electronic anonymous wasteland. I will hunt you down on every board just to see if you will back up YOUR BIG MOUTH. How you gonna pretend you have a girl, when you dont even have time for a job cuz youre up here trying to pick internet fights? Which no doubt, comes from a hard day of getting picked on in real life. That goattard thing you came up with was real cute too, sounds like you've definitely grown into your big boy pants. I'm gonna post this on all the latest boards, so everyone can watch and see you puss out on your bad ass challenge.. You post up to me again and I'll give you my e-mail. We'll start from there. God willing, you'll be from Chicago so I can come collect in person. Here's a little advice for the future: When you come here try and just enjoy the rumors, dont go callin people out with stupid ass bets, that you know we cant verify. The fact you cant prove it is not only your stregnth but also youre weakness. I know its a thinker. Ask someone to explain what that means. I'll come back and check in a day or two. F#ckin kids

Damn, Zito, now i see why you get so defensive. You are everywhere. Youre tellin people not to take theirlives so seriously, when you just about have a stroke when someone calls you out on your lack of knowledge! Ha, you are one little manipulative kid(look that up).

Goat...

You are the one that hunted me down..

Remember that.

Please do not put brackets on an html htm or... well, just don't put a bracket on ANY weblink... If you are going to do that, you might as well not include it at all... Just hit return twice after you're done with your line and then insert your hyperlink and then hit return two more times and continue to type or just hit post after you insert the link... Please, brackets screw it up and you include it to make it easy for people to look at it, if we have to type in the address bar, we might as well just go to google and look it up for ourselves! I appreciate the effort, just take a little more care please! Canadian_rocket17 I don't mean to call you out, you just were the one I decided to say something about, others have done it though and I accept fault for letting it go one without comment before now. So sorry to put you on front street, it wasn't my intention.

I lie somewhere between zito4cyyoung and Phishisgr8, Wilkerson does nothing for me as a preference, but he does have some tools that will help fill gaps.

If you made the argument that Seattle was two good starters away from being a great team last year and the offense was solid enough to get it done, then Wilkerson returns the offense to that level.

Bedard is a key piece of this transaction considering that Silva and Morrow or Rowland-Smith only add maybe 3-4 wins to the team and our offense is relatively the same. The Angels have got 2-3 games better with their acquisitions, so we haven't covered the gap to be the top team, but Bedard will make that difference cause his overall effect will have to be considered a -1 to the Angels.

Bedard over Weaver or Ramirez is a +5 or +6 games by itself and while he wouldn't be worth that much to other teams, other teams didn't have our 4 & 5 starters in their rotation!

My point is that I believe while Sexson won't have a career year, he will return to the Sexson of 2005 & 2006, if he does that then he easily replaces the loss of Guillen and Wilkerson if healthy can duplicate Sexson's numbers from 2007 pretty easily. If you take Wilkerson's stats from 2006 & 2007 and combine them together you get 658 ABs and by dividing by 5 you get 131.6 ABs and then you times by 4 and you get 526 ABs or about 140 games played... If you suppose he's as healthy as he says he is, just like Guillen said he was healthy last winter and was, then he should complete 140 games in 2008. The formula above also can be done by times 558 ABs by 80%, if you do this to all of his stats, he projects to about:

.240-.260 AVG (figure he'll be better if healthier), 80-85 Runs, 28 HRs, 80-85 RBIs, 10 SBs (since it was a leg injury that has to be considered), 65 BB, 170 K, .320-.340 OBP, .445-.450 SLG, .750-.755 OPS

I figure if he accumulates 80% of these projected numbers, he'll still be more productive than Sexson was last year meaning our offense did get a little better between his improvement over Sexson's '07 numbers and the improved play of the youngsters Betancourt and Lopez.

Take your drama elsewhere, if it didn't start here, it shouldn't continue here!
