« Twins Intrigued With Mets' Johan Offer? | Main | Rumor Royalty: Jon Paul Morosi (Tigers) »
This one isn't a prank...the Cardinals are considering signing Juan Gonzalez and inviting him to Spring Training. Every year there are rumors about comeback attempts. It would be surprising to see Gonzalez in the St. Louis outfield at any point in 2008, but you never know.
Juan-Gone is 38 now, and hasn't been in the Majors since that infamous one at-bat in 2005 with the Tribe. He's 66 home runs away from 500.

Palmeiro not available?

I was just thinking about how the Cardinals are a little short of PED guys.
Posted by: MikeMeyer | January 17, 2008 at 09:33 AM
better off trying to bring back Ron Gant or Ray Lankford. Maybe go all out and get Willie McGee.

As a Cubs fan, this made me smile. It really has hit rock bottom for the Cardinals in 2008. Glaus, Izturis, Clement, and maybe Juan Gon? Wow.

This isn't really "news".
The fact that the MIGHT invite a guy to spring training doesn't mean anything.

@ register...
this is a rumors site. go to cnn.com if you are looking strictly for news.

As much as I like the Cardinals...God they are going to suck this year. Their starting rotation is going to get rocked so hard. I actually think getting Troy Glaus made them better, but not by much.

thanks for info salty, your a really smart guy.
Even as far as rumors go, a POTENTIAL spring training invite doesn't rank.

Yeah, its a sad day for the Cards that this even leaked out.
Posted by: Aduncaroo | January 17, 2008 at 10:46 AM
what are we, worried that this might take playing time away from standouts like skip schumaker and ryan ludwick?! who cares. at least there'd be a nice little sideshow of talking points with ankiel and juan-gon in the outfield.
surprisingly i don't hate this.

It's only a minor league deal, so why not? For those making fun of the Cardinals, saying that they are going to suck this year and criticizing their moves.... why not wait until the season actually plays out? Then and only then, you can talk.

This is not the first time the Cardinals talk about Juan Gonzalez, They try to sign him in the past aswell, but he got better offers. They try to sign him way back before they sign Reggie Sanders. It been a very long time ago. Think of what it will do to the Cardinals lineup signing Gonzalaz and have him bat behind Glaus. That might give Glaus some protection. It also will not hurt the Cardinals in the clubhouse because Juan-Gon was a good teammate in the past.

It seems to me that the Cardinals are moving toward making Rasmus the starter. I understand that moving Rolen solved a locker room problem but they braught in Glaus he might be a steadying veteran presence. And maybe Juan Gon might prove to be a bit of a mentor if they both land in AAA. Just a thought.

@ registereduser...
"thanks for info salty, your a really smart guy."
That would be "you're a really smart guy". And yes, I am!
"Even as far as rumors go, a POTENTIAL spring training invite doesn't rank."
ru-mor: noun 1. a story or statement in general circulation without confirmation or certainty as to facts.
So yes, a POTENTIAL spring training invite does qualify as a rumor.
Thanks for playing, please pick up your goody bag on the way out.

"For those making fun of the Cardinals, saying that they are going to suck this year and criticizing their moves.... why not wait until the season actually plays out?"
The Cardinals finished in third last season and have done very little to improve their team. Meanwhile, the Cubs and Brewers have gone out of their way to make their teams even better. I AM waiting for the season to play out. But right now my prediction, based on what they have done in the offseason, is that they will fail. Their starting pitching will crumble..mark my words...

Thanks for proving your an idiot Salty.
I said "as far as rumors go... it doesnt rank"
That means while it IS a rumor, it's NOT significant.
I know basic things like this are hard for you to understand but keep trying.

I guarantee the Cards will finish above third place. I don't know if they will win the division or not, though they easily can. But I guarantee they will finish above third place.

The Cardinals are behind 3 teams talent wise in the central. Cubs, Brewers, and Reds should all be better. They haven't even improved much if any...3rd place at best next year.
Posted by: Aduncaroo | January 17, 2008 at 04:25 PM
As much as it pains me to say it, I agree with Aduncaroo, and I think he is being nice. Third place may be tough. Pretty sure they will better than the Astros and Pirates....we shall see.
Posted by: inthecards | January 17, 2008 at 04:58 PM
The Astros improved with Tejada and Valverde and Kaz Matsui. Plus a new manager. I think Cards-4th
Posted by: dbacks2007 | January 17, 2008 at 08:07 PM
Behind the Reds? Wow. Yes, the Astros made some moves, but I don't think a new manager guarantees you move up in the division.
Posted by: OchoaSTL | January 17, 2008 at 08:14 PM
Kaz Matsui is a great hitter, hes part of the reason they went to the WS. Tejada will hit in that park, Valverde is good. Stl needs to sign Igor!!
Posted by: dbacks2007 | January 18, 2008 at 03:26 AM
THE ONLY REASON THE CARDINALS FINISHED 3rd IN 2007 WAS BECAUSE BIGGIO LINGERED.
Posted by: dbacks2007 | January 18, 2008 at 03:31 AM
You were just thinking how the Cardinals were short PED guys!! HAHAHAHA "Palmeiro, not available?"
They have the market on cheaters!! (LaRussa) Is alcohol a PED?? Is (Pujols) lying about your age a PEAge ?? This is one class act team!!
Posted by: dbacks2007 | January 18, 2008 at 03:41 AM
Bring back McGwire and sign Canseco!!!
Posted by: dbacks2007 | January 18, 2008 at 03:42 AM
When I read this I had to check the calendar. I thought it might be the first week of April.
If they are serious about this then sign Sosa. He can still play RF a little and was very good against lefties in Texas last year. He has to be better than this!
Posted by: Bleacher_Buddha | January 18, 2008 at 06:58 AM
igor still has a lot of baseball in him,he's healthy again he'll be the comeback player of the year,a great slugger still.
Posted by: pito | January 18, 2008 at 08:23 AM
wow, dbacks, I didn't know your ignorance of baseball carried over into other threads...that is come seriously dumb stuff you posted. Wow.
