Marlins Interested In Luis Gonzalez

A new suitor has emerged for free agent left fielder Luis Gonzalez: the Marlins.  According to Ken Rosenthal, they like the idea of bringing him aboard as a mentor and using him at first base and in left field.  Gonzo will have to choose between playing time or a contending team.

Rosenthal notes the Brewers and Mariners as other possibilities.  The Giants and Twins could also consider him.  Gonzalez hit .278/.359/.433 for the Dodgers in '07, earning $7.35MM.  Rosenthal notes that he's 498 hits shy of 3,000, but that would take four seasons of semi-regular playing time at the least.

Replacing Mike Jacobs' ~.320 OBP with Luis Gonzalez's ~.360 would help the Marlins out a lot, with either having Gonzalez at first or Willingham at first (And either of which would likely be an upgrade deffensively over Jacobs, even with how bad those two are with the glove)...however, 2008 is essentially a wash year for the Marlins. Maybin should not be up on opening day, there is no real third base option so far, and several pitchers are also a year away from contributing at the major league level (Not just prospects like Volstad but injured pitchers like Josh Johnson aswell).

As a Marlins fan, who wants to see an entertainment product on the field, I would really love to have Gonzo. But he was signed for 7.35m last year. Unless he's willing to sign for sub-5m, I don't like it looking at the future of the organization. Tons of players are going to be hitting arbitration in '09, and we need to stock pile as much money as possible to actually be able to afford them.

The Marlin's seem pretty set in the outfield I don't think this will happen. Marlins look to make some big leaps offensively I know it doesn't seem that way but with the team being 1b Jacobs, 2b Uggla, ss Ramirez, 3b Cantu, lf willingham, cf maybin, rf hermida they look real solid. They can build on that and should save the money for arbitration and to make serious moves in a couple years.

I wonder if Luis Gonzalez will get back to his '01 form this year, haha (57/142/.325/.429/.688).. One of the most obvious juicers by looking at his numbers, in my opinion, so he could be ready for a sharp decline. He can still produce decent numbers, but have a good back-up ready to go because at his age and for other reasons, he could see some significant time on the DL.

maybin is gona bat .200 in 08. he's far from ready to me a productive major leaguer.

They still have ross and de aza to fill in if maybin can't hake it but they might as well let him play. They are not going to take the division.

sorry I meant hack it!

Yeah, you have to have serious concerns about Maybin at this point.. He is a great talent but he is so young and only has 20 AB at AA and 50 in the bigs.. he needs another year or two before he is ready to be an everyday player.

Yeah who wants Gonzo, a washed up juicer? My Brewers don't want him because he'd be at best marginally better than Gabe Gross. While Gross might not have tremendous upside, it's a lot better than the downside that 40-yearold Gonzo has. It's also worth noting that my 12-yearold neice has a better arm than gonzo Does. I'd rather have Julio Franco.

MrQuestions:
I think that Gonzo has a little left in the tank but I think that Lofton is a better fit for the Brewers.. He's more likely to stay healthy, gives them a little better range in the OF and still provides the veteran leadership and playoff experience they need on there young team, which could very well make the playoffs this season. Gonzo will likely go to a team that is looking for a little pop in the line-up.. the Brewers already have plenty, in my opinion.

Yeah GoTribe, I totally agree with most of that... except I'm not sure Lofton is the right solution for us either. Lofton is only an option if he eats his ego and plays LF, because we don't want to get into the business of musical postions... our best prospect is a LFer and we expect him next year.

The Giants?

Well, I guess Sabean really is serious about replacing Bonds with a younger LF'er

Yeah, Lofton definitely needs to be in left.. It's not that he isn't capable of playing center, it's that Billy Hall is just going to be better there. I'm not sure how Hall's arm is, but I assume it is better than Lofton's, along with a little better range. Lofton went to Left last season for the Tribe, I think he'll definitely consider going to left field to play on a contender.. Someone in another thread mentioned moving Lofton to center, Braun to LF and Hall back to 3rd... Possible, but seems a little complicated though. Even though I would think that everyone of those players is able to make the switch, it just seems a little silly.

Yeah whoever said the Marlins will be good offensively next year are probably wrong. They'll be getting crap production at third (Castillo/Cantu), catcher (Rabelo), first (Jacobs), and center (Maybin). Hanley Ramirez is a stud and probably a future hall of famer at this pace, and Josh Willingham is a decent power hitter. Jeremy Hermida needs to have a big year this year, otherwise I'll lose a lot of faith in him. Uggla is a good hitter at second as well, but he doesnt get nearly enough walks. Maybin will be lucky to post a .700 OPS, and I have zero confidence in Rabelo, Jacobs, and a Cantu/Castillo platoon. I expect it to be a long year for Marlins fans unless suddenly five of Olsen, A. Sanchez, Miller, Nolasco, Gaby Hernandez, Volstad, Vanden Hurk and Mitre turn into good pitchers this year. And that won't happen. Luckily a rotation of Olsen, Miller, Josh Johnson, Sanchez and a fifth guy could be incredibly good by 2009-2010.

Although I agree with most of what you say Scribbletone, Maybin's MLE OPS was nearly .750 last year, and MLEs are incredibly hard on players who were in A+. I think and hope he starts the year at AA, but he's deffinatly close to being MLB ready.

One thing I do wonder about though is Barry Bonds. Everybody only talks about the A's now-a-days, but I really doubt the whole perjury thing has scared Loria away. And it's been known that Loria would like to have Bonds, even being one of the few team to offer him a contract last year. Signing Bonds would boost the lineup 10-fold, and would severely help boost attendance to very likely make signing Bonds a profit.

But there's the whole, you know, jail thing lingering, plus other teams likely can offer a better contract (As the Marlins contract would be like they offered Pudge, and payed off over a several year period) and a better situation then a young team basically having a wash year.
