« Mariners Hesitant To Part With Jones For Bedard? | Main | Multiyear Contract Discussions: Teixeira, Tulowitzki, Morneau »
A reader recently mentioned that it might be interesting to see which states are best represented among MLBTR readers. I could do a straight ranking of visits by state for this month, sure. But that would be skewed toward the most populous states. Instead let's look at MLBTR January visits as a percentage of each state's population. Here's how they rank:
District of Columbia
Illinois
New York
Connecticut
Massachusetts
Missouri
New Jersey
Rhode Island
Minnesota
New Hampshire
Maine
Iowa
Maryland
North Dakota
South Dakota
Vermont
Wisconsin
Pennsylvania
Kansas
Indiana
Delaware
Washington
Virginia
Ohio
California
Kentucky
Nebraska
Nevada
Texas
Georgia
Montana
Arizona
Florida
North Carolina
Tennessee
Alaska
Oregon
Colorado
Hawaii
Michigan
Oklahoma
Arkansas
South Carolina
West Virginia
Idaho
Alabama
Utah
Louisiana
Mississippi
Wyoming
New Mexico

People live in Rhode Island??
Posted by: zito4cyyoung | January 18, 2008 at 11:06 AM
Wow. I'm blown away by North Dakota. I'm from Chicago but my mother-in-law lives in Fargo and we visit there quite often.
I would've have never guessed that there was such interest in baseball there. The pop. is so small with Fargo being the biggest city with 60k and Minneapolis is the closest big city - 4 hours away!
I would like to hear from North Dakotans about the interest over there especially since it's supposed to be 22 below there for the next 3 days. Maybe being on the computer is about all they want to do now.

People like Barry Zito?

Canada gets shafted again, eh? ... j/k Tim
Posted by: stoeten | January 18, 2008 at 11:09 AM
Don't expect much from Texas. For one, it's a football state. Secondly, Dallas has the worst sports fans in the world. Houston isn't much better. Only two types of people go to a Rangers game: Families and Yankee/Red Sox fans.
Posted by: uwe | January 18, 2008 at 11:09 AM
Connecticut is represented well for not really having a professional sports team
Posted by: DunkUntoU | January 18, 2008 at 11:10 AM
Where's Washington DC?!?!?! Those of us in the nation's capital come here too!
Posted by: gonyanks21 | January 18, 2008 at 11:13 AM
Florida's not exactly a baseball state. Our main rumors are about how much closer we're getting to a Minor League payroll, at least in Miami. But then, there are plenty of Yankees/Mets/Sox fans around too. (I'm a Yankee, but I like the Marlins cause they're the hometown team.)
Posted by: NYYanksCaptain23 | January 18, 2008 at 11:13 AM
The rankings are probably somewhat influenced over the nature of this off-season's hot stove. Johan Santana has been a big topic this year, which may be why Minnesota is so high on the list.
Posted by: junglepack | January 18, 2008 at 11:18 AM
Hey now...I am in Texas and I visit many times a day...obviously by my name here...I am a Cubs fan...that simple reason would be the fact that I am from Chicago and good old Uncle Sam has me hanging out in west Texas... 2008 has to be the year!...go CUBS !!!!!
Posted by: cubbieintexas | January 18, 2008 at 11:18 AM
Hey everybody. I'm checking in from Dickinson, ND. I'm 25 years old, I love the Twins and I've been reading Tim's rumors for close to two years now. I think that I found out about the site from someone at the Fantasy Baseball Cafe, and have been doing my best to share its greatness with all of my friends ever since. Most of the North Dakotans I know are Twins fans, although the Cubs also have a decent following here. Let me tell ya' nobody will be happier than I am when the uncertainty surrounding Johan comes to an end. Ultimately, I think the Twins are going to resign him.
Posted by: savvy_stu | January 18, 2008 at 11:20 AM
I wouldn't have expected Alaska or North Dakota to provide more of a following than, say, Colorado or New Mexico. But for the most part it does sort of follow that states with MLB teams tend to look more often.

I agree - what the heck, where's DC? We may be a state, but we sure get taxed like one! And deploy Soldiers, house the national government etc etc...
Oh yeah, and we have a baseball team, too.
Posted by: bignatsfan | January 18, 2008 at 11:21 AM
I agree - what the heck, where's DC? We may *NOT BE* a state (oops), but we sure get taxed like one! And deploy Soldiers, house the national government etc etc...
Oh yeah, and we have a baseball team, too.
Posted by: bignatsfan | January 18, 2008 at 11:22 AM
wow. my state(PA) has 8 non-baseball team states in front.
Posted by: Oriolefan10 | January 18, 2008 at 11:23 AM
DC ranked quite high if I recall, I just wanted to do the 50 states for now though. Dont worry I still love my DC readers. You were well-represented. Maybe I will add ya.

GO FLORIDA
Posted by: Barroid_Bonds | January 18, 2008 at 11:24 AM
DC actually ranked #1 overall, well over IL as a % of visits. I kind of wondered if my numbers were off but maybe they're correct.
Posted by: Tim Dierkes | January 18, 2008 at 11:26 AM
I live in Fort Lauderdale, and unfortunately, I'm not surprised that Florida ranks so low. People here just don't care. I'm a transplanted Philly phan, and when I go to Phillies/Marlins games, the crowd seems to be more Phillies than Marlins fans. I'm still hopeful for a new stadium, so the team would actually have some incentive to spend some money and keep some players and generate fan interest. You'd never know this team has won two World Series.
Posted by: joe f | January 18, 2008 at 11:38 AM
So, basically I'm the only person in New Mexico who reads MLBTR. F-ing hippies.
Posted by: John Peterson | January 18, 2008 at 11:47 AM
Tim, how is the time spent per visit determined? Obviously if the person visits multiple pages, you've got the time difference between the two hits as a minimum time spent, but past that it must be pure guessing...
Posted by: yanksfan | January 18, 2008 at 12:04 PM
I live in Fargo, ND and have been following the site for almost a year. NoDak is full of sports fans of all kinds because, well....There's nothing else to do. The population of NoDak consists of 90% Twins fans, 5% Cubs/White Sox fans and 5% Yankees/Red Sox/Team of the moment fans.
Posted by: Krisjian | January 18, 2008 at 12:05 PM
North Dakotians, eh? You must be from Pennsylvania, New York or Mass.
Posted by: Krisjian | January 18, 2008 at 12:10 PM
Or people like me (Fargo, ND) leave the site up all day
Not to mention Fargo is just under 100k people, not 60k like said above.
Posted by: aj58078 | January 18, 2008 at 12:11 PM
hey tim..im from Canada..how many Canadians do u get to traderumors?
Posted by: Larsen101 | January 18, 2008 at 12:16 PM
I take credit for at least 1/2 of the visits from people in Iowa.
Posted by: IowaCubs | January 18, 2008 at 12:18 PM
I think I'm the North Dakotan holding up those numbers as I spend a lot of time looking through this page...
Posted by: Rustad23 | January 18, 2008 at 12:20 PM
Seriously, guy, the District. Give us some love. We've nearly 600K folks here, more people than Wyoming and nearly as many as North Dakota and Vermont. And we're crazy about an absolutely awful team. Throw us a bone.
Posted by: noisewhiz | January 18, 2008 at 12:23 PM
DC people, I updated the post - you are on top.
Yanksfan, I'm not sure...just using Google Analytics data.
Others - please don't use the comments here to rip on/generalize about entire states! Had to delete a few comments.

Keep in mind -- the results can be skewed somewhat depending on how people access the Internet.
For example, I live in IL, and if I surf while just on my ISP's connection, it'll no doubt show up as a hit from IL. But when I log into the work VPN, I route through my company's Internet data centers to get out to the big I, and my path might come out of Texas, or Jersey, or...well, you get the idea.
During the day, I read the site from my work connection, and I expect that's true of many others as well. Of course, there's not much you can do about it; just an FYI.

How about internationally? Could you do a similar thing comparing Venezuela, Dominican Republic, Japan, etc?
Posted by: Luis Salazar | January 18, 2008 at 12:50 PM
Question- do they count feeds to Google Reader? I have read everything you have written the last 3 months, but this is my first time on the actual site?
Posted by: krmgolfer | January 18, 2008 at 01:18 PM
woohoo! Go DC!
Thanks Tim!
At least we get representation SOMEWHERE. *casts baleful eye at Capitol Building*
Posted by: bignatsfan | January 18, 2008 at 01:21 PM
I am from michigan. So I will represent the mitten.
Posted by: ptk420biatch | January 18, 2008 at 01:41 PM
Well i'm part of the Connecticut crowd. Probably one of the few that's here for Mets news and not Red Sox or Yankees.
Though i don't really visit the site, just read the RSS feed. Does that count?
Posted by: rargy | January 18, 2008 at 02:00 PM
I'm somewhat surprised to see Jersey in the top ten. But good for us, I guess.
Posted by: no funny hats | January 18, 2008 at 02:00 PM
I'm from Michigan, and we don't seem to have that many baseball fans. Everyone I know is a bigger Wings fan, or Pistons fan.
Posted by: rdccdr801 | January 18, 2008 at 02:02 PM
Florida is not surprising at all. I live here and I'm a diehard Marlin fan, but nobody else cares about them. Miami is probably the worst sports town in America. They show up when the team wins but when they lose they find something else to do
Posted by: Louis Puma | January 18, 2008 at 02:30 PM
the "Toronto" Blue Jays are from Canada, so how about some love for those from Canada.
where would the numbers from all of Canada come in compared to the states?
Posted by: SpecialFNK | January 18, 2008 at 02:35 PM
MINNESOTA YEAH! I think our rank would drop a good 10 states if not for Santana though. At least I know I'd still be visiting just as often.
Posted by: johansantana17 | January 18, 2008 at 03:48 PM
My grandparents live in Fosston, MN (by Fargo, any North Dakotans know where Fosston is?), and it seems like there is some interest in the Twins but not a ton, so I'm kind of surprised by that. I think more people up there care about the Vikings.
Posted by: johansantana17 | January 18, 2008 at 03:55 PM
Hey Tim,
I am from Colorado, but am originally from CT. Therefore, I'm a Yankees/Rockies fan. I love your sight, and read it religiously. I also think you are pretty funny, so keep on using your humor on this site; it works! Keep up the good work! From Colorado
Posted by: ToddF | January 18, 2008 at 05:55 PM
what i find interesting is that there isn't a west coast state until Washington at #22, and no southern state until Virginia at #23. people in the east coast and midwest appear to be the rumor fiends!
as for me -- Minnesota represent! Santana or no Santana, this site is the best for baseball junkies.
Posted by: capsaicin | January 18, 2008 at 06:28 PM
Fosston is about halfway between Grand Forks and Bemidji.....I come here everyday.Nice to see ND and Minn. right up there.I hope the Twins find a way to keep Santana.....no one is offering close to what he is worth.
Posted by: KENW | January 18, 2008 at 06:35 PM
I'm from Illinois. I would like to see if you Tim, could do another one of those what could have been trades; that was a good idea.
Posted by: kevybo1 | January 18, 2008 at 06:57 PM
proud Tigers fan here IN Michigan ;-)
Posted by: cfrezz | January 18, 2008 at 09:14 PM
California representing here!!!!
Posted by: LAD Lavigne | January 18, 2008 at 09:59 PM
"North Dakota residents spend 2 minutes and 44 seconds on the site on average, tops among the states"
-That's just because the people of North Dakota are slow readers.
Posted by: frogger6 | January 18, 2008 at 11:32 PM
Interesting feedback Tim. And don't forget about the Cards fans in Illinois who help out their numbers!
Posted by: cardsfan05 | January 19, 2008 at 02:23 AM
DC #1 must be taken with a grain of salt if this is compiled using percentage of population.
Im suprised theres no Colorado or Arizona fans on here. Tucson represent!
Posted by: dbacks2007 | January 19, 2008 at 02:38 AM
Good point dbacks2007. If it's only a city, the percentage would be much higher because all these states have country too.
Posted by: johansantana17 | January 19, 2008 at 10:48 AM
West Virginians spend the least time on the site because they can't read.
